I have a 4th generation just to run an ancient tiny TV and the Homescreen UI alone on that is horribly slow and that version has more processing power.
Weird, I've got the 4th gen (HD) too and it's really fast. It did have upgraded storage, maybe that makes a difference.

"best possible Netflix experience" my ass. What they actually mean is "we cannot track your whereabouts on those devices and we need to be able to block your account sharing"

edit: jesus, why so many downvotes? is everyone here working for Netflix?
How could they not track your whereabouts? They can still see the public IP address and that will come with associated geolocation data.

They can see your IP but they cannot act upon it, as, most probably, the software on those devices does not support blocking the client based on such criteria. Same applies to some older devices, like I got an old iPad on iOS 12 which does not receive Netflix app updates anymore and as such cannot be "marked" as a not-under-the-same-roof device, while my iPhone received the warning and eventually was removed from my brother's "household."

The article title is a bit confusing since the Apple TV 4K is also referred to as a "3rd Generation". They are referring to the old 2015 non-4K one.
That makes more sense. Guess they should get a bonus for such cost saving strategies. Their CEO officers get identical compensation packages for 2024 worth $40 million each.

Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters will receive a $3 million base salary; a target bonus of $6 million; a RSU award with a total value of $15.5 million and a PSU award also valued at $15 million.

Now if they could just make decent movies again. Been years.

What I find the most irritating with all steaming services is that they still show content I have already watched. There is content I have watched elsewhere, which the streamer wouldn't have known. So I wish there is a way I can mark content as already watched and not show again. I know I can mark things Like or Dislike, but it's only for recommendation purposes, including things I have already watched.

It’s tempting to buy new Apple TV, but…..

DO NOT BUY!!!!!

Despite what Gurman says, new models are still coming soon this year, but it’ll be again a minor update with updated A series chip most likely. (Instead of having the M series chip like originally planned)
Oh, if it is a minor update according to your expert opinion, why not buy now when it's on sale?

What is the point of all of this? Why can't they just maintain a basic "light" interface for Netflix for older devices? For all the "greenwashing" that these companies do, you'd think they'd maintain support for old devices, especially since their revenue comes from subscriptions and not hardware sales.
Agreed! The last thing I'd imagine any streaming service would want to do is force a pause on viewership and give users a reason to reconsider their subscription (especially with the added cost of a new device).

Interesting. I assumed Netflix would just disable the account itself rather than individual devices.

A large number of service providers are doing this now. Crunchyroll stopped working with iOS 15 while the latest iOS version is 17.

I'm still not sure if it's Apple or these individual companies.

We ended our Netflix “experience” 2 years ago or so. Best decision ever, 100 recommend!

Netflix is as bad as Apple with the propaganda and pandering and pricing.

I receive the Netflix email yesterday and I will not be trashing my "obsolete" AppleTV, I run Netflix through my Samsung Smart TV so it's a moot point.

Mine died last week so I needed to get a replacement. It was the 2010 version and did not really want to buy another until I saw what Apple had up its sleeve. But after looking at the options, I gave in and ultimately got the most current one with ethernet.

I was surprised mine died, no joke it's the first Apple product I've owned that just up and died. Not an iPad, not an iPhone not one. And I have a lot of old working Phones and iPads.

Netflix will no longer support second-generation and third-generation Apple TV models from July 31, 2024, the company has announced in an email to some subscribers.

apple-tv-2nd-gen-2010.jpg

Netflix said that the decision made to "maintain the best possible Netflix experience" by focusing on devices that can support the latest features and updates.

The second-generation Apple TV was the first of its kind to feature a black body and an aluminum Apple Remote, an updated look compared to the silver and white Apple TV that was originally released in 2007. The unit was powered by an A4 chip, and offered up to 720p resolution output.

Apple sold the second-generation Apple TV from 2010 until 2012, which is when the company released the third-generation Apple TV with an A5 chip and support for 1080p content.

Both models run on an early variant of iOS that precedes tvOS and lacks an App Store. The devices are classed as obsolete by Apple and no longer receive updates.

Netflix will remain available to access on the Apple TV HD (originally the fourth-generation model) and all Apple TV 4K models.

After the July 31 date, Netflix recommends that to continue viewing content, affected users either upgrade to a newer Apple TV model, or use other compatible devices such as smart TVs or Roku devices.

I still have one of these 3rd gen ATVs, but pretty much only use it to airplay to projectors when I'm giving presentations. Still works great.

Hard to imagine that it can't handle Netflix 1080p video in a guest room or hotel tv.. Everything still feels faster/more responsive than an entry level Ruku one of my clients has...

I don't know. My Apple TV 4K does not have the option to make its location my "home" (Android TV does) and thus I have still not been blocked even though I am using my account from Mexico and my dad made his house the "home" (without asking me!) like last year.
You're telling me Netflix is ending support on 2nd gen and 3rd gen Apple TV because they cannot track user whereabouts, but they're not ending support for your Apple TV 4K even though they cannot track your whereabouts on it either? 🤔

Or perhaps Netflix is ending support for 2nd gen and 3rd gen Apple TV because Apple dropped support for them (i.e. they cannot run any version of tvOS) a long time ago.

Time for our daily outrage I guess

Folks, I'm all for extending support, but the ATV 2nd/3rd gen are well over a decade old

That is eons ago in tech terms

Everyone is just bashing Netflix in this thread (somewhat deserved) but no comment on how they've supported the application on hardware from 2010? That's impressive. Gotta give credit to Netflix for that.
they're cutting out the Current gen of Apple TV. WTF?

And yet a person could buy a new TV back in 1975 and use it until 2009 (and even past that if they bought a converter box) natively with OTA TV.

Corporate greed and indifference on the part of consumers has sped everything up.

I don’t use or care for Netflix. But you’re breaking EULA. Perhaps that’s the reason for the justified downvotes.

We opted with the ads and then our ATV did not work. Phoned Netflix and was told our ATV was too old and did not support ads, so watching Netflix on smart tv. However, on watching Netflix on the smart tv we noted that the caption text was white without the surrounding black box, making it impossible to read when on a light background. I could not change the caption text as the smart tv did not have that option when in Netflix. I did go into Netflix on my MBP and was able to change the caption text to white in a black box, but now the black box is also in a white box. But now at least we can read the text. Also, we noted that the video in some scenes is sort of whitish and we did not have these problems when viewing on the ATV before Netflix changed things. Not prepared to buy a new ATV though.
