And you know this how?Apple has plans to put the new AI feature on Apple TV as well. The new AI feature will only likely work with newest Apple TV the company will release next, due to on device AI requiring higher memory power.
Because of this, any of current Apple TV sold will likely NOT support the on device AI.
And yes, the new AI feature is what will make HomeKit shine and make Apple TV the ultimate home hub.
Yeah hilarious ,DO NOT BUY!!! NEW ONE INCOMING.....but only minor update lolOh, if it is a minor update according to your expert opinion, why not buy now when it's on sale?
Got your point, however, I am not the one saying new equals better, M1 is 3,5 years old. M1 is super technology, but Apple has own vision of product lifecycle. How many of us know when Apple will start cutting its support for the M processor line ? If Apple TV, then M3, M4 which is absurd overkill imho. Or keep the A processor line. I wish I could use the Apple TV storage in a more free way rather than how Apple wants me to use it.It’s tempting to buy new Apple TV, but…..
DO NOT BUY!!!!!
Despite what Gurman says, new models are still coming soon this year, but it’ll be again a minor update with updated A series chip most likely. (Instead of having the M series chip like originally planned)
I find all streaming services UI suck. They and their algorithms bite the big one.
None of their crap gets me to watch anything I wouldn't otherwise watch. All they do is make it more difficult to use their services as I wish too. It is like "I pay you every month so stop screwing with me."
I’m sure they based this decision on the number of those devices still connecting to their servers and probably feel the number is small enough now to cut support.Everyone is just bashing Netflix in this thread (somewhat deserved) but no comment on how they've supported the application on hardware from 2010? That's impressive. Gotta give credit to Netflix for that.
yeah, apple changing their sign-in auth method on the backend while neglecting to issue the change to users devices effectively killed it, along with any chance of me ever buying anything like this from them again.Sadly Apple abandoned it years ago. Can’t sign into iCloud Photos anymore.![]()
Why would Netflix continue to maintain software on old devices that are used by a tiny proportion of their users? It takes resources to do that, especially as the apps and software features are constantly getting updates. Edit: They would likely have held back on feature updates to ensure all their apps can support the older devices. What is the point of all of this? Why can't they just maintain a basic "light" interface for Netflix for older devices? For all the "greenwashing" that these companies do, you'd think they'd maintain support for old devices, especially since their revenue comes from subscriptions and not hardware sales.
Yeah. Who care about Netflix at all. And other devil companies. We vote every day with our wallets not every 4 years. And who case about TV at all. My is just AirPlay display."best possible Netflix experience" my ass. What they actually mean is "we cannot track your whereabouts on those devices and we need to be able to block your account sharing"
edit: jesus, why so many downvotes?
“The second-generation Apple TV was the first of its kind to feature a black body and an aluminum Apple Remote, an updated look compared to the silver and white Apple TV that was originally released in 2007.”
And that sucking Netflix GUI? It sucks as much as the Prime, HBO, Disney, NL-Ziet and Videoland apps. The Apple TV app on your Apple TV is the worst one IMO.
Prime Video makes using Apple TV to find content useless. I search for something and it always shows up in “How to Watch”. But this is not true. I can watch it in Prime if I have a Paramount +, HBO Max or some other subscription service I’ve never heard of. And the experience to discover whether I can actually watch it or not on Prime without another service is terrible. When I select to open Prime from “How to Watch” it always makes me select a user rather than taking me directly to the content. I can only assume no one who works on the app has ever used it.Of the ones I've tried, Netflix and Disney+ are possibly better than Amazon Prime and Apple TV because they only show you stuff that is actually included in your subscription, whereas Prime and ATV are continually trying to sell you stuff (and their names are confusingly mixed up with rental/sales services).
One thing Netflix plays nice with on Apple TV is, if you have the Netflix app icon on the top row of the home page, when you highlight that icon, it will show a row of Netflix content above that you can shortcut to.Since when DID they support Apple TV? Their app does not work in the Apple TV eco system like all the other apps with „next up“ shortcuts etc, interactive videos do not work, for most settings you need to log in on a browser. Worst streaming experience ever.
The Apple TV Netflix app feels like an afterthought and a way of Netflix giving the finger to Apple and its users of whatever reason they might have.

What do you like better about Roku?I have a 1st gen and 2nd gen Apple TVs that have been sitting unused in drawers for years. After learning about Roku years ago, I will never buy another Apple TV.
So with this news is there anything that can be done with this old hardware? Can they be modded and used in another way? Or are they just bricks at this point?
