this is great news for netflix users and it helps keep the mac as a viable platform for streaming content. however, after taking a 3 month hiatus from netflix - i believe that having a subscription isn't worth it anymore. if netflix offered an a la carte method i would definitely be using it.

finally some movies worth watching.

took me about 2 weeks to watch all the instant view movies netflix had that were worth watching. looks like they're adding 5 more, whoopee.

seriously, this will be nice, but their instant view selection sucks a lot, unless you're into B (or C) movies from the 80s.

From my instant queue:

The Bridge on the River Kwai
The Rock
Air Force One
Platoon
Rushmore
The Lives of Others
Pan's Labyrinth
Stand By Me
Immortal Beloved
The Boondock Saints
Ghostbusters
Bonnie and Clyde
Dog Day Afternoon
East of Eden
Rebel Without a Cause

Now I dunno about you, but I consider that a good selection of films.

Hi
I'm psyched. Also psyched to stream to my Xbox 360. :)
While it will be great to get Mac support, getting it on the 360 should be helpful enough for me. We'll see how good the NXE (New Xbox Experience) turns out. I have Vista through Boot Camp right now because I need it for work but it sucks having to reboot each time at home for Netflix viewing. That and more and more instant choices is always good.

excellent news. this is one of the only reasons i would need to use windows. hope this comes out sooner than later. lets hope the quality and connectivity is solid upfront.

Everybody complaining about Netflix streaming selection needs to review the post more closely. Netflix also announced a partnership earlier this week with Starz, which grants them access to thousands of new titles to stream. Of the first 1,000 already release: Ratatoullie, Spiderman 3 and Pirates at Worlds End.

I was thinking about reactivating my Netflix membership so I can use instant watch....until I remember it still doesn't work on Macs. End of the year? Hope it's soon! :)

It's about time. I've been sitting here all month waiting for the NetFlix streaming to go live on my Xbox 360. I find it totally apalling that they waited this long to even support it.

Only problem is they offer very, very, very little in the way of movies they have to stream. I think it's only something like 12,000 titles.

The funny thing is it's in their best interest to get more customers who stream cause putting a hardcopy of hundreds of thousands of movies out there is asking for piracy to happen. If they offered streaming to every customer Mac, Windows and Linux then they wouldn't have to worry about it as much. I've never done it, but I know guys who do nothing but pirate their netFlixed DVD's to external HD's.

Yup yup. They go Mac and I return as a customer. Do you hear me Netflix?

More like "do you hear me Apple?" It wasn't Netflix's decision to not stream for Mac. Apple wouldn't share their DRM license with Netflix - now I guess they will.

This is what Netflix has had posted on their site ...

"Our apologies — instant watching is currently not supported for Macintosh.

Our goal is for Netflix members to enjoy movies and TV shows on whatever screen they want. We're required to use Digital Rights Management to protect movies watched instantly online, and right now we only have approval for this protection on Windows Operating systems, not the Mac.

Apple does not license their DRM solution to third parties, which has made this more difficult, but we are working with the studios and content owners to gain approval for other solutions. As soon as a studio-approved DRM for the Mac is available to us, whether from Apple or another source, we will move quickly to provide a movie viewer that enables you to watch movies from Netflix instantly on your Mac.

In the meantime, you can use your account to watch instantly on any compatible PC, and Intel-based Macintosh computers can watch movies instantly using Boot Camp, Parallels, or Fusion to run Windows. Also, your Macintosh is fully compatible with adding titles to the Instant Queue for later watching on compatible devices, as well as to have a playlist ready to go when we do enable Macintosh watching.

Netflix on AppleTV!!!

Since the iTunes library has a small and mostly pathetic selection of movies, it would be great if Netflix could supplement that with downloads that could be watched on your AppleTV. I do not need another set top box, thank you very much.

More like do you hear me MPAA or do you hear me Microsoft?

Why would you need Apple at all to make a DRM solution for their computers? Worst case, require viewing through your own application with your own solution.

The problem is that the MPAA requires streaming companies use an "approved" solution, which conveniently enough up until recently was realistically limited to only protected-WMV -- which conveniently enough Microsoft decided not to implement on Mac.

Whether or not Apple chooses to license Fairplay isn't really the problem.

If Microsoft didn't have such a strong lobby, the industry would have long ago dropped Microsoft and Apple's solutions and developed their own cross platform.

I think it's dumb for the music and film industry to give so much control to either company's solution.

AppleTV plug-in for NetFlix

Why would Apple allow another content provider use their equipment?

Apple runs the iTunes Store barely more than profit, they make the money on the equipment.

How does allowing NetFlix content on AppleTV work in that plan?

I'm not knockin' it.
My NetFlix account would reactivate and I'd buy two AppleTV's if this would happen.

Outstanding! This is a great move, since Netflix has teamed up with Microsoft to bring it to the Xbox 360 later this year. Huh...it just occurred to me, I wonder if there's any tie-in? The Xbox update should be in November which will add this functionality, and that's definitely "before the end of the year". Hmmmm.... :D

I just noticed something. Earlier when I went in and noticed there were tons more movies thanks to the Starz addition, I added over 100 movies to my queue and then when I got home and decided to watch one some of them had been taken off of watch instantly including what I had intended to watch, MST3K. :(

EDIT: I just read a bunch of the comments on Netflix about it. Apparently it was pulled because it was not MST3K it was just the original version of the bad movie!
