Quote from at&t:

"Slingbox, which would use large amounts of wireless network capacity, could create congestion and potentially prevent other customers from using the network. The application does not run on our 3G wireless network. Applications like this, which redirect a TV signal to a personal computer, are specifically prohibited under our terms of service. We consider smartphones like the iPhone to be personal computers in that they have the same hardware and software attributes as PCs."

And this differs from a PC with a 3G card how? I don't see any restrictions for laptops, and you are even calling the iphone a personal computer...

not a big library but this will be awesome! one of my favorite shows has season s on netflix. Hopefully the steaming will be fast. usually it is good on my ps3.

Ain't no netflix on the PS3, although it has been rumored that it is coming for a couple of months now. You mean 360?

No cellular network will ever be able to support 40 million users walking around getting live video feeds.

ever, huh? wow, that's a long time.

especially considering the installed base that would have to exist to make something like "40 million users walking around getting live video feeds" even relatively realistic.

that would mean what... like 300 million iphones total?

at no time... EVER... will there be 40 million live video feeds going simultaneously. or you know... not any time in the next 5 years.

i understand that ATT has to protect its precious network. i just wish that network wasn't so weak to begin with.

This is a better idea for the :apple:TV, if it isn't available already.

Remember those tablet rumors that said it would have AppleTV-like functionality?

I'm willing to bet that AppleTV will take that form. A tablet with an HDMI/MDP port that plugs into a TV. Added Netflix is going to make that device!

in 2 years we went from using cell phones to make calls and some light network tasks to streaming HD quality video. no one can upgrade a network this fast to handle this kind of growth

If iPhone how far behind can Apple TV be.

I have to believe that if Apple are going to allow Netflix to stream to the iPhone how far behind can Apple TV be. Does anyone know if there is a hardware barrier to this or is it a possibility. I assume they are streaming YouTube now.

I am MUCH more excited for a good update to the Apple TV which I'm hoping is coming soon. The only thing that has changed since Apple said they will continue to invest in it was the new Apple Remote. I love the new remote but I want a full on Apple TV update with 1080p, more storage, DVR, and an SDK with the App Store etc.! That would be HUGE!!! :D I honestly don't care about Netfix, especially when their streaming cue has such a pathetic selection.

Honestly imagine if Apple releases an SDK and App Store on the Apple TV. I DON'T UNDERSTAND why they haven't. :( It would be sooo huge. They would finally conquer the digital living room! COME ON APPLE!!! HOW CAN YOU NOT SEE THE OPPORTUNITY HERE??? You already have all the pieces, just put it into effect!

The :apple:TV has a 1 GHz Pentium M and 256 MB of DDR2 RAM and a 64 MB nVidia GeForce Go 7300. Netflix will be on this in no time.

I'd like a DVR-like version with HD tuner and more VRAM.

I want 1080p @ least 120 Hz. Right now the max is 720p @ 60 Hz. Throw in a Blu-Ray player, price it at $350 for an 250 GB, $450 for a 500 GB. Those are 2.5'' drives. It seems like the perfect application.

Can't wait for Netflix on the Wii. That's one more nail for the current AppleTV incarnation. Apple really needs to update the AppleTV.

No kidding! I love my AppleTV, but WTF? The Wii gets Netflix before the ATV?

I highly doubt there will be subtitles/closed caption. Movie/TV studios are too greedy not to include 'em. I don't blame Apple and Netflix for it.

I use Netflix "Watch Instantly" over TiVo and it's great. The only problem (and it is a big one) is that the selection is very limited. Mostly it's crappy B-movies that no one wants to watch (Rob Schneider's The Animal), or really old movies, and even among these there's not a lot of premium stuff. The tv selection is extremely thin (no Battlestar Galactica, no Entourage, no Rome, not even any Mystery Science Theater 3000), and patchy (for example, Star Trek Season 1 is available to watch instantly, Season 2 is not). There's also hardly any HD content, but the quality is pretty decent among what is there.

Anyway, boo for AT&T for building such a fragile 3G network that can't handle media streaming and blocking video streaming to iPhones.

Might go well with the rumored Tablet movie-watching device.
For some reason the rumors focus a lot on how awesome the movie experience is with this rumored thing, so if you could stream netflix to it, then great.

Sorry to rain on everyone's parade, but it'll be a cold day in hell when netfix is offered via the iPhone. Why in the world would Apple approve this App? Remember, Apple is anti-competition and they would want anything to compete with movies rented via iTunes. For those who think this is even a remotely possibility, you must've not owned your iPhone for very while. Next up, Dells being sold at the Apple Store.

There have been strange exceptions to this rule. Like MapQuest (competes with Google maps) and TV.com (competes with iTunes). Hopefully they see this as synergy rather than hostile competition.

Now if I can stream movies on my Iphone and use my Wii to watch them instantly on my tv, netflix might finally get my money.

"The report notes that a similar restriction is likely for any Netflix video streaming on the iPhone."

...but I can stream YouTube and audio (iHeartRadio, Slacker, Pandora, etc, etc) via 3g...

If ATT is scared of video, they need to ban YouTube streaming via 3g. Oh wait...

(I actually think bans are Apple, not ATT. I watched Singbox on my Bold all the time via 3g).

To this, yes and no. The reason video over 3G is banned is not because Apple wants it, but because the Apple iPhone is far more popular then any other individual phone, AND most other phones are not used in such a wide array of ways, even if they have the capability.

Like, my 'smart phone' can watch youtube videos and surf the web, but I never do either because it is more of a hassle then it is worth.

As opposed to your iPhone, where EVERYBODY will go to youtube, because honestly, it's really easy to do.

Give me the reason.

Okay Netflix give me the reason to come back. This sounds interesting but wait I'm not going to reactivate my membership yet. Now Apple give me the reason to buy AppleTV support HULU and Netflix and you can have my word.

i would have to ask why? Has the battery life all of a sudden tripled? If your jacked into a power source, you probably would be better served using a better device for playback, but i guess it doesn't hurt if you already have service.

if at all, it will be for the tablet.
but not going to happen.
itunes.

It's not gonna happen, that would directly compete with renting movies from iTunes!!!

People, people, please. The iTunes store exists to sell hardware. Hardware! It's not about selling more movies, it's about selling the devices the movies play on. Please get that through your heads. Netflix streaming = better hardware = more sales.

This is a better idea for the :apple:TV, if it isn't available already.

:apple: TV is a closed system. Why would Apple want to lose money to Netflix, Hulu, etc? Apple offers a movie rental service that is a competitor to Netflix. Now even though Netflix streaming is often full of older less popular movies, there's still not much of an incentive to Apple. Until the demand for Netflix streaming on an :apple: TV reaches the mainstream, it wont happen. To reach the mainstream, Netflix would have to offer new releases through streaming. This would cost Netflix too much money right now, that is why Netflix streaming is mostly full of older movies (cheaper to license). If Netflix makes the jump to phase out physical media rentals and embrace IP rentals, Apple would be in direct competition... so either way it wont happen. The game consoles allow/ will allow Netflix streaming because Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo are not large media distributors and have less to lose and more to gain from the possible outcomes. Apple is no longer just a hardware company, that's why they are no longer Apple Computer Inc. Apple is the largest music retailer in the USA. They don't want any other competitors on their hardware until the FCC forces them to open the gates.
