If my Apple TV isn't powerful enough to do that in Boxee, how could the iPod Touch/Iphone possibly have the horsepower to do it?? (Is the 3G S faster than the AppleTV??)

I think this will work for the iPhone, but beleive this will be more for the rumoured tablet. Makes since.

Then how does my MLB@Bat App stream so well over 3G? Sure, it's not pristine perfect quality, but it's damn OK for casual viewing while away from the conventional items that I'd normally view TV on.

they either have dedicated network connections running from MLB's datacenters to ATT's cellular network or they have servers with the content positioned on ATT's network around the US so that if you're in NYC you grab the content closest to you.

with slingbox you're streaming from your home DSL/Cable connection so there is no way to organize or optimize the network traffic

I don't know that its a bad idea to limit the streaming of whole movies at a time to wifi. If the network can't handle it id rather them limit this than open it up and have the network grind down under the load.....

Funny sprint doesn't seem to have problems with slingplayer et all.

I find this discouraging because I know if I even try to let the streaming I'm doing in my forthcomming application work over 3g it will get rejected. So I am just going to limit it to wifi from the start.

This is depressing because I know a lot of people working on video streaming applications and they feel the same way.

Hopefully this will change when att isn't the only game in town for the iphone.

The problem with 3G cell isn't the CDN (the Akamai and other Content Distribution Networks, which is what "positioning the content" is).

The problem is that the standard for a cell tower is a 1.5 Mbps "backhaul" to the network - so that no matter how many users are on the tower, they share 1.5 Mbps.

Carriers are moving to get more bandwidth, but full FTTCT is expensive.

Some interesting comments and facts here:

http://www.broadbandreports.com/shownews/101409

For example: "The problem with AT&T isn't entirely in its 3G deployment (HSPA itself is, admittedly, superior in a perfect implementation to EV-DO), however, but the combination of insufficient backhaul, terrible density buildout and frequency reuse on AT&Ts part, and the sheer density of iPhones on the network.

Let's get one thing clear here, and that's that the GSM-based carriers in the US also are party to the most immature 3G networks. CDMA is still king in the land of the free, and Verizon as well as Sprint have a far more mature, robust Ev-Do roll out than any of their GSM counterparts."

Right but either way, my comment was in response to someone else saying streaming over 3G is basically useless. It isn't. However it is done, I would presume Netflix would also be working towards mocking MLB@Bat. If they do, then I am thrilled. Now all I need is hulu.

I guess this means an official netflix app coming soon? darn it, I just paid for the iphlix application. I still like it though, maybe they'll video streaming once it becomes available.

Wtf!? Why No Love For The Ps3!!!!!!!!!!

*GRUMBLE* MAN, I'm SO SICK of not gettin' any love for my PS3. First they stream to computers, then X-BOX, now iPHONE!??!?!?!

SOOOO close to cancelling my membership over this garbage.

But they must be referring to the next generation Wii... The current Wii doesn't even support Dolby 5.1.

Dolby support is a lot less important than the fact that Wii can only output progressive standard def content.

I have a 52in Samsung. I'm never going to rent an SD movie. Never ever ever.

Tape

Nope. I won't tolerate being interrupted for some damn Cialis ad or that video professor retard telling me to try his product. That's why I download the TV shows and watch them with no ads or I watch them on Netflix, or I just don't watch them at all. Much better.

You could always tape the show and fast-forward the ads. :D That's what I do, but then again I am using a VCR and they haven't been around for a while now (How long as it been?).

I sure do miss all those flash banner ads.

Yeah, maybe you'd be happier without GIF and JPG support either, since many ads are in those formats....

FLASH is a lot more than ads. It's a huge part of the web, and the iPhone is gonna be the only major mobile platform without access to it. A prospect only a true fanboy dimwit can rejoice at.

And if Apple screws the Netflix app, to protect its dead-end ATV, I hope the feds come on them like a ton of bricks.

Apple would do it to make money on the set top box. As an FYI - Netflix instant doesn't often have new releases. iTunes would be there for that.

Netflix would do it to reach out to the Apple community and build a larger customer base.

Both sides stand to make a lot of money from something like this.

Short term maybe... but Netflix will be entering the same "New Release" IP rental market that Apple competes in. Apple wouldn't sell that many more :apple: TV's because of Netflix. Individuals that buy Apple products like them for their ease of use and integration. If Apple turns the :apple: TV into an open platform for 3rd party apps they will go back to relying on hardware sales over media distribution sales. The service provider for the iPhone is at&t, the service provider for the :apple: TV is Apple. Apple is trying to dominate the movie rental business just like they dominate the music distribution business. Why would Apple want to lose potential marketshare on their own device? I am not saying games or small apps wont make it the :apple: TV at some point, but the core use of the :apple: TV is watching video, video sold by Apple. Apple can gain marketshare with the :apple: TV by keeping hardware profit (prices) low and making up for it through the content sold to play on the device. The same idea the big games console makers have used for years. Microsoft lost millions of dollars by selling the original Xbox below production cost, but made up for it in marketshare gain.

TiVo

We use the wonderful +30/-8 button on the TiVo. what a stroke of genius.

Or yes you can use TiVo, which I forgot. I can't use a TiVo, my Sat service doesn't support it (or does it and I don't know what I am talking about? :) ).
