Cool. Unrelated question, is VLC making an app for the Vision Pro?
I love VLC, but I’ll admit for general media playback IINA has surpassed it on my macs and infuse on my atvs and ios devices. The straw that broke the camel’s back on atv was a bug with using samba shares that seemed like it was never going to get properly fixed.

Infuse should run no prob on the vp

I don't think very many people intend to watch movies on this $3500 headset with 2 hours of battery life.

Perhaps. I have heard it is a certainty that none of the pessimists who will definitely not be buying one will see ANYTHING at all on one of these. However, those foolish few who are apparently tricked into buying one by intense seductive forces... or mistakenly buy one while under the influence of powerful narcotics... or perhaps are gifted one by someone who knows no better... will probably- I say probably- watch some stuff on them.

And if some of them need more than 2 hours of battery to do whatever they want to do with it, they might do the very same, insanely-crazy thing I did the early 2000s with my Powerbook G4 with only 2-hours of battery life: buy an extra battery or two to turn 2 hours into 4 or 6 or more. I suffered no downtime on countless flights back in those days by getting a few of the most key accessory to overcome that problem.

And then- even more crazy- several airlines now include electric sockets for electronics users. So perhaps a few of these Vpro users might just plug it in to watch for the entire duration and maybe not even burn any battery at all?

I have netflix for free from my internet provider. So for now I'll keep it. And 100inch tv with a dolby atmos system. Would never watch a movie with a helmet on my head and fake bad sounding surround. Hope apple finds other use fields for vision pro and they manage to shrink the size. Then it might be interesting. They're last out with a vr headset. That means they need to have a something that seperates them from the masses. From what I've seen they're as impressive as samsungs gear vr you got with s7 back in 2016. But with better ppi.

This kind of user hostile behavioir is why I cancelled Netflix.

I use the TV app on Apple TV, iPhone, iPad and Mac to organize my watch list for virtually every streaming service and none of Netflix's shows appear there so I ended up rarely watching Netflix – so I cancelled.

Netflix is to the TV app what GM is to CarPlay. Both are shooting themselves in the foot in sabotaging the most valuable buyer demographic.

Is this just an Apple thing or do they not allow this on Roku either? I have a Roku tv. I just go to specific apps for what I want to watch.

They're waiting until they can figure out how to charge extra for it.
This is true - however that price increase will probably be warranted. The budget for content designed for the Vision Pro will need to be increased significantly. Netflix and other companies will pass that along. I think eventually; you might even be able to purchase virtual seats to watch a football game on your VP - or a live concert. Sounds crazy, but I don't think we are far from this. Content will make a big leap forward and the monetization of it will be on a completely different level - if what we saw in the demos can hold up to real life use on this device.

That's ok. As long as the browser works on VR sites and any content restrictions on videos are optional we're good.

Several threads on here keep talking about a "killer app". It's not Netflix I assure you.

PSA. Prepare now to reduce the risk of repetitive stress injury.

In any case, I hear this thing is super heavy too? I wonder how heavy.

Thats too bad. I must be the last person who loves Netflix and can almost always find something good in their catalogue whether they made it or not. Would love to watch a movie this way. And I cannot go back to disney....their content has been so bad.

Never count Apple out. But I just can't see this being very successful. Not in terms of their other products. I'm sure they'll 'sell out' but I'm sure they are only being produced in relatively small numbers. Bit I do hope it at least allows them to get to a 2nd or 3rd iteration that is smaller, lighter and more affordable.

Who actually wants to watch shows / movies on a headset?

If on TV, you can pause, do something, get water, rest room, etc and unpause.
And don't forget, on TV, you can watch with others..

who wants to take this off every time they have to do something while watching a show / movie and put it back on over and over?

Very inconvenient device..

Netflix has no plans to release an app for Apple's upcoming Vision Pro headset, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. Instead, the streaming service will be accessible through Safari and other web browsers on the headset.

Vision-Pro-Living-Room.jpg

"Our members will be able to enjoy Netflix on the web browser on the Vision Pro, similar to how our members can enjoy Netflix on Macs," a Netflix spokesperson told Gurman.

In a July 2023 edition of his Power On newsletter, Gurman said Netflix would "still let its iPad app run on the headset unmodified," but he now says the streaming service will not offer an app of any kind on the Vision Pro at launch. Apple makes it easy for developers to port their iPadOS apps to visionOS, with over one million apps to be available on the Vision Pro's App Store at launch, but Netflix has evidently opted out.

Apple recently announced various video and sports apps that will be available on the Vision Pro at launch, including Disney+, Discovery+, Max, Amazon Prime Video, Paramount+, Peacock, ESPN, MLB, and more. There is also MLS Season Pass in the Apple TV app.

Vision Pro pre-orders begin Friday in the U.S., and the headset launches February 2.

What a surprise, the company that closed Blockbusters making another Blockbuster move in its long line of ‘winning’ decisions.

Infuse dev says:

"I believe it will be ‘usable’ but there are a lot of unknowns with regard to things like menu and playback control with vision tracked interactions compared to a tap or mouse-click interaction, which is pretty much what you are limited to in the simulator.

What we will probably end up doing is making a TestFlight version of the app (which has been partially optimized for AVP) available to early adopters of AVP, which will likely be better than the straight iPad version. This would of course improve over time, and getting feedback from real users would also help us with development."

Amen brother! Now that I've been finally convinced by the endless posts of the extremist Vpro pessimists, I'm right with you on this.

Unfortunately, I only have an 82" TV but I do have a fantastic Receiver and great big, high-quality speakers for surround sound. Instead of this insane, relatively small, mobile device with virtual screen nonsense, my plan now is to always book an aisle seat on the planes when I travel so I'm towards the middle, bring and balance the 82" TV on the tray table, get a couple of guys or gals far left and far right to hold the left & right front speakers, get someone in the row ahead to hold the center speaker above or below the TV... and get a few people back behind me to hold the rear left, rear center and rear right speakers. It doesn't seem like it should be hard to get some volunteers to cater to my wants in that way.

If I want something in ATMOS, I'll bring a few overhead speakers and get some passengers to stand there and hold a few speakers above me while I watch. Piece of cake!

Instead of piddly 2.5 hours of battery for video consumption like in this dumb thing, I'll have to resolve the ZERO minutes of battery life in the TV + Receiver + AppleTV or similar source. But maybe I can only fly on airplanes with electric sockets and I'm confident many complete strangers will happily give up their sockets to let me have this my way. Airline passengers are so renowned for their self sacrifice like that!

If I can't find 5 or 6 fellow passengers to hold all this stuff in the right places, I'll just have to book multiple seats for speakers & related equipment. No problem as $3500 should let me book a LOT of seats on a LOT of flights. I fly 20-30 times each year so that math should work out fine. Forward left-center-right seats, rear left-center-right seats, maybe 2 more for the big subwoofer (it's a big FAT boy) and then one more seat for me roughly in the sweet spot center of all of that.

Then there's just that little matter of convincing the airlines to let me bring all this stuff on the planes and use it... but I rarely am challenged when I want to bring 150-200LBS of stuff on planes now. Maybe I can just claim I'm using my 35LBS of carry on weight per booked seat??? The sub and the TV weigh more than that but I'll just have to convince them or bribe them with all that money savings from not buying Vpro.

Now, I'm also intending to get some work done while flying too. And if I don't want to try to make a measly TV stand in for my 40" ultra-wide desktop monitor, I'll just bring it as well... maybe rigging something up so I can have some apps running on it WHILE watching the big 82" in the background... like this stupid device is apparently able to do. If they'll let me bring all that other stuff on the plane, certainly one more "small" 40" ultra-wide monitor- and one more volunteer letting me take their electric socket- should be no problem at all.

That's the ticket! Or ticketS! ;)

Is there a documented explanation anywhere of the reasoning behind Netflix’s staunch reluctance to fully participate with Apple products?

Thinking this seems to be an extension of Netflix’s attitude toward full integration with tvOS 😕

Just their history in general and their founders’ attitude toward everything, and experiences with being the first major streaming company.

It’s simple really. Anything that shows you Netflix content outside the Netflix app reduces engagement with what they want you to see. They were one of the pioneers of ******tification. They helped invent this damned engagement culture.

Netflix has always felt like the most important, and especially since the major studios pulled all their contracts and each took their one good show away and onto their own subpar streaming service, they are obsessed with control.

At this point it seems a little counterproductive, but it’s still their policy. It’s not just Apple products. They demand special treatment everywhere. But especially with Apple since they had some leverage since way back, and think too much like Apple to give Apple any potential leverage.

I am not surprised. Super small number of users so no hope of remotely covering the cost.

It would be really expensive to develop for it. Say then need to buy at least 10 of the head sets on the low end plus you are talking multiple engineers to do it. On the cheap side this would be 3-4 million for them to develop it for it and that is being cheap. Cost only go up.

That makes visionOS sound closer to a Mac then a IPad. Safari like Edge is DRM compliant. It begs the question why does Apple need streaming apps in VisionOS if Netflix says that.

Ohh I’m getting my popcorn out for the GM car play thing. I can’t wait.

From business point of view it makes sense for Netflix not to do it. Why waste resources/money coding and maintaining another app for a platform that is considered a niche? What percentage of Apple customers are actually going to buy a device that cost a few thousands dollars and can only be enjoyed by one person at a time?

You ARE apparently the last person. Everyone on here passionately assured everyone else in writing they were quitting over that last few dollars price hike. ;)

And then they assured everyone else again 🤪 over that shared subscription decision clamp down. So they quit Netflix and then double-quit it for good measure. Some have also assured us all that they were quitting in the previous price hike thread, so they are the very committed, triple quitters: now that will show 'em.

Question for you: how are you paying for that 6 Million net subscriber increase Netflix reported after doing all that? Wow! Can I apply from some kind of lucrative grant from your foundation or charity? ;)
