Stopping VPN's and changing a grandfathered price? Oh Netflix... bad choices.
You can bet that if Netflix had their way, they'd offer all their content across the board in every market -- this is surely a move forced by their agreements with the owners of the content, who want to wring every penny out of international distribution, have agreements in those places with other distributors, etc. Same people responsible for those fun "region-locked" DVDs and Blu-Rays...

Speaking of Apple TV, it's these byzantine content licensing agreements that are keeping Apple from starting their own Internet-based cable alternative package. The dinosaurs aren't giving up their power without a fight!

I cancelled my netflix. As an european I pay more ($13 a month) than the US users and I get maybe half the selection of titles. VPN has been a necessity to get the same value as other countries, so now that they target us, I decided to tell them what I think, and the only way to do that is through my wallet. I urge everyone else to do the same until netflix and the movie industry get their act together and stop with the BS.

$9.99 now -> $14.99 later -> $29.99 much later. When cable companies are gone and online streaming are the last remaining choices, well see prices rise to todays cable prices.
But at least you will have a freedom in time schedule and smart resuming on multiple devices.

I know people will be all up in arms about a couple bucks, but I was on the old grandfathered rate until switching to the $11.99 tier when we got our 4K tv last month. It's actually still a great value for us because you can have four concurrent logins on one account. My wife and I gave one each to our parents so they don't have to pay for their own accounts. Even without a ton of old movies, we watch the original content enough to be more than worth it.

I don't believe having more original content is a way (or excuse) to increase price. I recall hearing from one of the Netflix talk about how they are justifying the higher cost to these original contents. I don't like most of them and I don't think they are any good. And if this an excuse or a way to not having to increase their movie content, then I'll be leaving soon.

I'd actually like to see them not even try on newer movies. Spend the money on buying content from other sources like the BBC or create more of their own original content. If I want to watch the latest and greatest movie then I don't mind just shelling out $3.99 to rent it vs hoping to wait two years for netflix to get it.
There are many (at least for me) programs from BBC on British Netflix.

$10 is still a great value, for me.

Netflix streaming is not the place to see big box-office movies, but then, Amazon isn't either, nor is any all-you-can-stream service that I know of. If you want to see The Martian, you're going to have to rent it from iTunes or etc, or have Netflix send you a Blu-ray. Which is what I do, in fact.

However, Netflix streaming does load up a lot of critically acclaimed films, just not money makers. Peruse Instantwatcher.com, for example, and you'll see what I mean. My instant queue is full of great stuff. You just have to go an extra step to find it.

You're tilting at the wrong windmill. As others have stated, outside of their own original content, Netflix is at the mercy of content providers and their regional distribution restrictions. Pretty sure they would love to operation without regional roadblocks.

On topic: It's $2 bucks extra a month. Easily affordable for most, and if it's not...
Netflix should be least among worries. imo, of course.

the fact that we have 2016 and still have to pay extra for HD is just embarrassing and greedy and i am not just talking about Netflix
I think it is more understandable if Netlifx does that than your cable provider. Because Netflix is obligated to pay more for its bigger infrastructure/data usage (when it comes to HD) than your cable provider which sends signal through his own cables where quality doesn't have such a HUGE influence. And yet, I have to pay more for HD channels to my cable provider.

Some of the comments here you would think Netflix was asking for your first born in payment.

IMHO Netflix is a value at even $15 a month with the wealth of content they offer. And they still allow you to share your account anyways.

Once someone is grandfathered, that should last forever. Doesn't matter if operating costs go up or the market changes and dictates higher prices.
Doesn't matter if one has had a great deal for years and you have saved a lot of money because the price increase should have happened a long time ago. What's fair is fair. Grandfathered should mean forever. And there should be a law preventing any company from raising a grandfathered price.

ATT raised my $30 unlimited data grandfathered price. In protest, I dropped ATT, destroyed my iPhone, and will use tin cans with string between them for future communications. Don't forget that disposable income is dropping and these companies should continue to support me forever to take this into account by not only not increasing the cost but in fact lowering the cost of a grandfathered price. If Netflix doesn't drop the cost of HD and 4K to $5 a month, I will simply stop watching TV.

As someone noted, it's $0.06/day increase. Not surprising nor offensive.

I do wish they'd forget the original content and focus on being the "long tail" comprehensive collection of everything (save perhaps for the most recent releases).

So. Freakin. True! This here is a 25% and 50% increase, respectively, and the 25% increase is not to force you to a better product, it is to keep the same product. Supreme Lameness! I have no problem paying more for a better product, and better services, but to pay more to keep the same product, by a 25% margin, is pretty unethical, in my opinion.

I agree with this. It would be less crappy if they would at least get rid of the joke "Premium" tier (which does nothing premium other than let you view a tiny amount of the same content with more lines of resolution) and fold it into the new $9.99.

The only upside is that once they make this change, I will be canceling my account and reregistering via iTunes so that I can consolidate the billing and get additional value out of the 20% off iTunes gift card deals that always come around.

Smart idea!

Who is the non-HD plan for? Is someone out there rocking an SD CRT tv with a media streamer attached?

No one. It was created during one of the price hikes. It's to give the illusion their plans are cheaper than they actually are when in fact they are more expensive because everyone will choose the HD plan. Similar to how Apple removed the 32gb option to force people to buy 64gb because they know 16gb won't be enough for anyone.

So it begins. You had me at hello, and now you want to play with the price. $10 still isn't bad, but everything else on the whole planet seems to be increasing in pricing so it's another brick in the wall...
