I mean, I get not liking what they're offering, but why actively wish for bad things to happen to them? If enough people don't like what they're offering, it'll happen naturally.
I don't read into what YayAreaLiving said as actively wishing for bad things as much as just hoping people realize they're not getting value for their money and force Netflix (by quitting) to actually give more value (like 1080p on $10+ plans). It's called voting with your wallet. Why should I be forced to pay for a 4-stream package just to get decent image quality?

Fair point. Perhaps a better interpretation.

Nor should people expect an ad-supported tier to provide downloads.

But one thing is true, when companies do bad things to any/all stakeholders, they need to do these things all at once. Then roll out good things over time. That’s the way Apple does it.

720p resolution would be good enough for me (resolution is the least important metric to me re content enjoyment) if the Netflix shows were of a high calibre that would be one thing. In general they are not, however. The vast majority of their docu-series are maybe ten episodes. Documentary film format is miles superior—respects the viewer’s time and forces the filmmakers to make better content, by them having cut all unnecessary scenes. When they can only include the best stuff in a 1h 45m - 2h 15m documentary film this compels the filmmaker to trim down and refine the work. The viewing audience wins.

If Netflix cared about quality they would take note of this, but they like many of these tech companies when they get bigger they begin to run their enterprise based on clicks, algorithms and manipulations. They reap what they sow.
A great film is hard to beat. And it really feels like a lot of shows are milking it to reach even 6 episodes. But if the subject matter is good, and the storytelling is great, a 3-part is not a problem for me.

There are few Ken Burns out there who can be compelling and on point for 10 episodes. His Vietnam series? Goddamn.

This just confirms it. I am still not going back to Netflix.
The revelation that the cheapest tier (which isn't even available right now, and is cheaper than any current options), isn't going to have all the perks of the more expensive tiers, is something which a) is surprising to you and b) is something you didn't expect?

That's like saying..

I am not getting the iPhone 14 mini as it doesn't have all the features of iPhone 14 Pro Max. #Surprised

I'm keeping a bottle of good Prosecco 🍾 in the fridge waiting for Netflix to blow up 💥. I tolerated any price increase regardless of the shameful streaming quality compared to other services. But the main reason I will party if they just die is that in the years, in parallels of the fee increase, they introduced worse and worse shows with the only purpose of helping one side's only political agenda. There are two right choices (but the first is the best) 1: No politics in the shows. 2: If you want to be political, you let anyone talk.

I want to like Netflix more than I do. But the simple fact is: they are way too expensive and 480 is a slap in the face. I didn't share password, and they are not the only fish in the see. I have Amazon Prime, HBOmax and Apple TV, and together they amount to about a Netflix subscription. They are good, but not that good.
Exactly!
"Password share" is just a childish excuse!
Other competitors share the same business risks. On the contrary they are one of the most expensive streaming service and they pack their shows with a lot of one side only political contents. They should ask money to the political part they help instead of whining like little girls.

We're in a period of transition here - at least in the US. For a long-time, it was cable. Which sucked. Then for a time, there was Netflix as the only real option for streaming decent content, along with some ok stuff on Hulu (which has gotten MUCH better these days).

Then the content makers entered the game, and we got HBO, Disney, Paramount, Peacock. Apple joined the party too. And now we have a mess.

It's going to continue like this for a while. Then we will get mergers and consolidation and then it will be back to bundles and incentive pricing (followed by a bump up after 12-months. Just like cable..

sheesh...

Yes and it’ll be back to square one. But people need to remember, this was inevitable, because all these studios have employees that still need to be paid, bills still need to be paid, the servers still need to be paid for, the use of pipes on the internet need to be paid for most likely for high bandwidth, no one is going to take a pay cut for a streaming service.
And they are hiring bigger and more often AAA list stars for the shows and films now, and I doubt they’ll take a pay cut either.
These services use to rely on good value, that won’t be the case moving forward and as everyone is streaming now, the market will continue to ensure prices are pushed up by all those in it.

The basic plan being limited to 480p is hilarious. HD has been mainstream for like 20 years and Netflix advertising it as a premium feature. You get it standard on the free-to-view channels here in the UK.

It also makes me angry that I have to pay for what is essentially a family plan just to get 4K HDR quality when I live on my own. They need to just give everyone 4K HDR and have the plans based on simultaneous streams or something. I’m getting ready to get back on my pirate ship to be honest, I’m done with them reaching further into my wallet all the time.

"... will allow subscribers..."

Wait, you'll have to pay for this? I guess this will be US only, because in my "poor" region, I'm paying 4.66 EUR for HBO MAX and 7.99 EUR for Disney+. A service with subscription AND ads can't compete with these prices. It would have to be like 0.99 and that's still 0.99 more than I'd be willing to pay for having ads show during or in-between shows.

Biggest point to get Netflix before was their huge catalogue of old movies. Now after years most people have seen what they wanted and with fresh content Netflix can't ask the price they ask. It's just way too much for the content they put out.

And for real all the plans should have 4K by now. I'm really interested to see how long it takes for them to make 4K for everyone, it's really weird thing from company to keep it going like they do and i hope they will keep losing lot of users so they have to make some big chances to keep up.

Also get somekind of quality control for your original stuff!

accountbot or Stremio FTW

I am not going to extend my year of HBO Max and Disney+, that's for sure...

Netflix should just put semi transparent logos in the corner. Whenever you pause the movie a banner ad comes up for that same company or product. The little logo in the corner stays there all the time during the movie or show and it looks just like any other station logo on that you see on a lot of commercial TV. The little logo could be forced to display even when offline, and the app will still report to Netflix what you actually watched and what logo and ad you saw when it is online again. It also doesn't ruin the experience with obnoxious ads making any noise. People will sit through the Coca-Cola logo to save a few bucks, they will then buy more Coca-Cola and waste even more money, and everyone is well paid or fat and happy at the end of the day. Netflix has the power to have millions of people pay Netflix to willingly sit through hours of targeted ads every day of the week. You could swing an election in a country with enough ad viewing Netflix users.

Im not aware of any ad served service tier that allows downloads. Certainly Hulu has the same limitation.
These vendors are beholden to their shareholders and the need to continually increase their margins because capitalism. Im over capitalism too and it affecting destruction on our world but im also over the entitlement of its users. Go ahead and rage quit, spare us your whining.

People I know are dropping left and right, here in Korea. And Netflix is desperate, so they get 2 free months if they say they are going to quit. Netflix is trying to cushion the sudden drop in subs, which will hurt their stock price. But people are going. Nobody wants ads. Torrenting has made a huge comeback as of late. Been reading about that, here.

In Korea, there are websites dedicated to finding a share partner to split your Netflix sub with. And most accounts have 2 or 3 households splitting the cost. If Netflix restricts Korea, they will easily lose 50% of their subscribers. I wouldn't buy their stock now, that's for sure...

Well there's a bay for pirates.... I have a feeling it will get more crowded in the upcoming period.
I cancelled my Netflix subscription long ago - mainly because I only care for the Witcher TV series and nothing more.

While I will not be visiting any Bay, I will pay for the sub once the whole series come out, binge watch it and then cancel again.

Lovely times we live in.

I was right there with you on being annoyed that one can’t get a non-family 4K plan, but pirating is the looting of the digital age - instead of “I’m so upset about this social issue that I deserve a ‘free’ microwave oven”, now it’s “these prices are too high so now I deserve a ‘free’ movie / tv show”. No, you don’t. If you want to hit them where it hurts, then don’t subscribe, or cancel your subscription. Looting some of their products on the way out just loses you any moral high ground you might have had - their prices dont give you the moral justification that you think it does. If you don’t like the price of something at a brick & mortar store, do you just shoplift it?

They’re not “reaching down into your wallet”, stop playing like you’re a helpless victim here, you are opening your wallet and reaching in with your hand and giving them money for something you’ve decided isn’t worth the cost. So stop both ends of the transaction - cancel and then don’t watch. Go do something else with your time. There’s no TV show or movie that you actually need in order to survive.

The way Netflix is treating their ad supported tier reminds me of the days of DVD when many producers of DVD movies would implement a system where the consumer would be prevented from skipping over new move trailer ad's. I've got many DVD movies where when you press play to start the movie it beings with showing 2-3 new movie trailer ad's and when you try to skip over these trailers the skip function does not work, basically your are forced to sit through the trailers before the movie actually starts.

As far as the ad supported tier goes, Netfilx will be ripping users off in my opinion because not only will they get money from companies wanting to put their ad's on the stream but they will also be getting money from users paying a monthly fee to use the stream, a double win for Netflix.
