I'm a bit of a Linux newbie; I've got Ubuntu 7 and the NetShare app but can't seem to get anything working. Anyone got tips?

i suppose if a good number of us relay our frustration to Nullriver inc. with regards to the less than perfect installation of this app, they could provide an official set of instructions rather than them relying on customers to do the work (in providing good instruction) they should do.
The instructions aren't the greatest, they should know.

Don't be so afraid.

First of all, don't take legal advice from people that aren't lawyers or have no familiarity with that's going on. Second, don't take legal advice from anyone in an Internet forum without doing you own checking.

Having said that, here's what I would ask your in person confirming source to confirm:

The only relationship that exists between you and AT&T is a contract. If you breach the contract, AT&T's remedy is to stop serving you and bill you for whatever contractual amounts you still owe them.

Unless you are doing something illegal with the "tether" you are not going to jail for using it. You might end up with a bill that may or may not stand up in court (see recent tentative ruling vs. Sprint) that AT&T may or may not chose to collect on.

AT&T could simply do deep packet inspection and shut down any device that was not on their contract. They have to do this because their shabby network can't handle everyone using it full throttle all the time. But they don't have anything actively blocking it.

Therefore, if you just play it cool and use this proxy for backup bandwidth where you're away from WiFi (which is all you would do anyway, given the speed, I would think) for some IMing and web surfing, some email, etc. and don't try to download Season 2 of The Office in HD, chances are you'll be fine.

Why? Because AT&T has a business interest in retaining customers. Unless you are abusing the network, they'd rather collect their $100 or so bucks from you every month. Now, this doesn't mean they are contractually obligated to keep you, but they have a compelling reason to do so.

So, I think the concern trolls on this page need to chill out. You are not goin to go to jail for using this app.

Might I note that recent tentative ruling is related to ETFs, not charges for tethering, so you are wrong. If AT&T figures out you are tethering, they will charge you for it according to the agreements you agreed to when you purchased your phone. It is that simple. That is all. If you keep going over what AT&T thinks is reasonable, *then* they might consider cancelling your account because at a certain point, it's not worth dealing with a bandwidth hog, even monetarily.

You're not going to jail for anything related to this. Your concerns are mostly moot. People here who are tethering just need to be aware that the iPhone data plan does not include tethering, and AT&T will be well within their rights to charge you for it. I've never heard of someone taking at&t to court over this because you are guaranteed to lose.

I suppose that if you read all the posts in this thread, you will see that I have already posted an email response from them telling me that more instructions are coming soon. My inquiry was for Windows but......

for the most part, agreed stormj. although 'concern trolls' might be a bit harsh.

the story relayed to me by my vzw rep was a guy who had racked up $10000 of overages on his bbconnect card. yes, that's not a typo. VZW was charging $.50 (yes 50 cents) a megabyte for every MB over 5 GB (the hard cap). he used 25 GB (1st 5 "free" the rest at almost $500/GB, well you get the picture) (he was apparently doing something involving streaming video of a less than scrupulous kind)....and it was rumored that he was using a work issued BB card for a "side business" - LOL

This story came up b/c i was going to hit close to 8 GB last month, so i called to flag my account so they'd know - and he said - honestly, this isnt an issue, it's egregious abuse that causes problems. Of course, since then, they've gone to the overcharge fees to keep things under control.

I'm sure ATT isnt going to broadside anyone with these kind of charges - but you're right, it's in their best interest to A) keep customers, and B) keep the network relatively open (and not clogged with torrents and streaming...

Tragedy of the (digital) commons anyone?

No longer available for download

The Netshare app is still in itunes' app store. Unfortunately, it's no longer available for downloading.

please trust me when say you aren't missing much. It works wonderfully, but I had the phone plugged into my macbook and I was receiving the 20% and 10% low battery notifications. BAAAD.

The app also made my phone so hot that it wasn't recharging until I put it in airplane mode for a minute.

Yeah same here.

I downloaded it a few hours ago, havent set it up yet.

Out of curiousity I looked and its no longer available for download in the US.

Nullriver has got to be getting a little pissed at this point. Come on Apple make up your frickin' mind!

Glad I got it. I was going to wait, but didn't want to lose the option of having it if this happened and it did.

Emergency

But before doing anything questionable with it (and before using it with any regularity), I will wait until AT&T and Apple respond to this, as I'm sure they will.

We should definitely have access to tethering, it's retarded that we're restricted.

I installed and tested it however, with Safari, Firefox & Adium.. and it worked well. Unable to use mail, WoW or MobileMe Sync (and probably a slurry of other internet functions).

The simple fact is, for emergency laptop internet, this is great, and well worth the $10.

The question is.. when would you actually need it :p

power outage. storm, etc. :)

caveat emptor

I stand corrected- perhaps ATT will gladly charge you if you sidestep the policy re: tethering.

Be careful here. AT&T once figured out I was tethering on my blackberry and billed me at an extortionate data rate. I obviously asked what was going on... and they told me they knew I was tethered... and if I read page 53 of my contract I'd see that tethering isn't included. I don't know how but I'm guessing they can figure these things out.

So maybe they're very happy with the app because they can charge you a fortune and point out that actually you agreed to it...

"no longer available"

Have tried to purchase on Saturday 2 August at 2:45PM Sydney Australia time on my USA iTunes account at $US 9.99. Also tried to purchase on my iTunes Australia account $AUD 12.99 - no go big Jo.

I get the message

"The item you tried to buys is no longer available.
The availability of the item changed while you were using the store. The same item may be available with a different price or elsewhere on the store."

So fellas - what gives?

The fact that this is not true tethering DOES NOT, I repeat, DOES NOT prevent them from finding out that you are using this internet sharing app.

Simply put, the iPhone is a device of limited capability. Many people have said they want to use this for WoW.

Do you honestly believe they can't check the ports and server addresses of their logs and locate people who have.. "somehow".. managed to log into WoW on their iPhone?

You obviously don't understand how SOCKS5 proxying works, so may be you should stop posting about things you know so little about..
