In all reality I don't think I've used the feature since Tiger or Leopard but I'm not a fan of removing things that don't necessarily need to be removed and don't benefit the user by removing them. More options are better than less even if I won't be losing sleep over the loss of Network Utility.

I FOUND IT!

When they remove command line then it will be, but now it’s just cleaning up.

Why ‘clean up’ a useful app or a useful part of the GUI? You used to be able to turn off ipv6 from settings, but post Mavericks (I think), it’s terminal only. No great shame, but why?

As I’ve said, the current Disk Utility is a dumbed down version of the previous disk utility. They could have just cleaned up that too, because everything is available in terminal... Crikey, you can create directories, remove them, copy, paste, delete files and all sorts from terminal, let’s do away with finder!

I think this is just part of the ongoing dumbing down of macOS . . .

This isn't this on the iPhones or iPads. Maybe you're right. Sad...
Me neither. It's not in El Cap, OSX 11. *shrug*

Oh! So discontinue an app that mimics what you fingers can do, and the thing is buried off the back 40? No wonder I've never used it. Good grief...

If you never knew a utility existed, and it's killed, is it really a loss? It saves some disk space I guess. Weird. Why bury the thing to begin with? Sometimes...

Actually I do a lot of that in the terminal.

Lived in country in many censorship I using Network Utility GUI to quickly tracing IP address and to be added in my hosts file list. Sure I can do through terminal, but Apple removing non mainstream utility seems no-brainer to me. Perhaps they also parts of OSX legacy, compared with current iOS-ish UI, Network Utility doesn’t fit with current Apple UI guidelines, and decided to toss it.

Something I feared about, entire Utility folder would be removed further, says like Audio-MIDI settings, Console, etc.

Why bury a 'useful app' in the back 40? Makes me wonder how many other apps are buried in out of the way places.

I use it almost daily when switching from WiFi to Ethernet to ensure the link runs at 1GBps, I use the Geforce Now cloud gaming service to play AAA titles on my MBA, and the usb c -> ethernet adapter sometimes fall to 100 Mbps, In this cases I disconnect and reconnect the ethernet cable and check on this utility the link is negotiated at 1Gbps, so I can reduce latency to a minimum. Now I’ll have to type and remember a terminal command for basic information that should be available in the GUI.
Open terminal. Type ifconfig. If you don’t use terminal a lot (doesn’t sound like you do) then next time you open terminal press up and it’ll show the same command. Press enter and you’ll get the same info, faster. Not sure how this is more difficult.

They probably got rid of it because it’s not in Swift and/or a current language andSL don’t want to put the resources into rewriting it when poweruser can get all the same info from the terminal.

Yeah, I get it, I use the Terminal extensively, and someone already pointed me to a filter to extract link speed from the ifconfig command, it does not do the trick though as "ifconfig | grep media" outputs "autoselect" for most interfaces and not the actual/current link speed, I mean, I'll figure it out and will eventually write a shell alias so its a simple word away, but this is beyond the point really, I think ethernet link speed is basic information that should be available in the Network preferences, you get that info for the wlan interface when you hold the option key on the wifi icon in the menu bar, but there isnt a way of getting ethernet link speed via GUI beyond Network Utility, which is going away. My point is they should rewrite the Utility in Swift not deprecated it.

Well that’s crap. I know the functions can be replicated in the terminal, but having a good GUI wrapper was really nice. Doesn’t make sense for it to be deprecated s as it didn’t rely on any word APIs, and while it hasn’t been updated in years, it really didn’t need to be.

Can anyone verify if any of the wireless diagnostics tools in Big Sur are still available? I'm looking for things like sniffer info logs etc.....I use this alot being a wireless engineer.

Apple has never been open source friendly.
That’s simply not true. They don’t open source everything, no. WebKit drives Safari and they contribute to it more than any other company. They’re contributing to FFMPEG, homebrew, and Python 3 for ARM branches currently. Heck even the Darwin Kernel, which is the core of macOS, iOS, etc., is open source. Don’t spread FUD.

Apologies, you are correct.

Another small step to strip macOS down. Lots of small steps like these and before you know people will embrace iPadOS as the next OS. What is next? Get rid of the shell. Make sure users cannot access their filesystem any more (or at least make it darn difficult). Overload macOS with tons of small -mostly silly- apps. Kill the business model of macOS users by reducing everything to basically nothing.

Repeat and continue till there is nothing left but kids with an attention span of 0 and only skills to swipe, tap bling-bling and 'pay Apple'.

And my question is: what will be left for scientists, engineers, developers? Nothing but a 'my first Sony' experience (for those old enough to remember ;-)

Apple: we need professional, state of the art equipment: both hardware and software.

This bums me out. I use Network Utility probably a couple of times a year, it’s very useful for network troubleshooting.

I don’t care if there are unix commands, I have a Mac ffs because I want a gui. Even if it’s a simple wrapper, it’s still a simple wrapper and typing command-space, n, u, enter is quicker than launching the terminal and typing a command.
