I think this is just part of the ongoing dumbing down of macOS . . .
Hardly. Terminal still exists for those that need to ‘do stuff’
Why ‘clean up’ a useful app or a useful part of the GUI? You used to be able to turn off ipv6 from settings, but post Mavericks (I think), it’s terminal only. No great shame, but why?

As I’ve said, the current Disk Utility is a dumbed down version of the previous disk utility. They could have just cleaned up that too, because everything is available in terminal... Crikey, you can create directories, remove them, copy, paste, delete files and all sorts from terminal, let’s do away with finder!
I alsway though the sort of people that commented on this kind of thing were all terminal heads. Why’s it suddenly a thing that not removing something is bad?
I use this application very often so I'll be looking for a full-featured alternative.
Terminal.
Dumb if down. slap on some iOSfication and ugly graphics and it will be fine....hey presto Mac OS 11!
Terminal
Apple has never been open source friendly.

Another small step to strip macOS down. Lots of small steps like these and before you know people will embrace iPadOS as the next OS. What is next? Get rid of the shell. Make sure users cannot access their filesystem any more (or at least make it darn difficult). Overload macOS with tons of small -mostly silly- apps. Kill the business model of macOS users by reducing everything to basically nothing.

Repeat and continue till there is nothing left but kids with an attention span of 0 and only skills to swipe, tap bling-bling and 'pay Apple'.

And my question is: what will be left for scientists, engineers, developers? Nothing but a 'my first Sony' experience (for those old enough to remember ;-)

Apple: we need professional, state of the art equipment: both hardware and software.
Honestly. ‘Stripping down’ is not exactly what has happened here. What do you think these people use to get sh*t done? Terminal.
Removing a little used app is nothing if you can still do what you need.
Half you people complain the exact opposite thing when it suits you.

Ah yes get rid of GUI in favour of terminal commands. how cute, archaic and ancient.

Many years ago I heard a story about a guy who was trying to get help on a computer forum. He posted his question and after a few days, he still received no response. He decided to post the same question again, this time changing his user name to something that appeared female. Within hours, he received several responses from other guys. That is what I see when certain people in this forum reply to posts by including a bunch of terminal commands. 🤣😂

Used it probably 4 times in last 16 years.
There's some of us who use this multiple times a day.. one of the simplest and easiest to use apps

Me neither. It's not in El Cap, OSX 11. *shrug*

Yes it is? It might've been hidden to this location. I'm not sure when they moved it from Utilities to here, but Network Utility has been around since possibly the start of Mac OS X

Yeah, look. I’m a true believer of moving forwards. In fact I’m almost 100% ipad here. I’m just absolutely amazed that everyone here on one hand hates everything Apple does cos it’s all dumbed down, and then the same people complain about this, which is literally the opposite.
Annoys me so much.

For personal things, I rarely use a computer at all - I'm all in on tablets as my primary computing device. Work? I basically live in the Terminal - the GUI makes some things easier, but mostly gets in the way.

Sad day! Trying to help a newbie over the phone will be much harder!

Apple bring it back!

Useless tool that never works for me, and regularly get's stuck trying to send info to Apple.

Slightly bizarre they are suggesting the use of Terminal, for many of us on here that isn't a challenge, but I would think the majority of mac users have never used a command line before.

The Windows equivalent of which it's name I can no longer remember, always worked better for me, but in that case I think it was because the driver crashed on my old laptop and needed restarting, ymmv.

Thats the Ethernet & WiFi diagnostic that gets stuck! Just getting a ping doesn't struggle (if the host replies)

Looks like they're moving a lot of configuration into networksetup for security reasons, and only allowing admins to use it extensively. Standard users can still turn wifi on/off but not much else. (Check out the WWDC 2020 videos)

You know damn well that the people you refer to were not asking for stuff to be made only available in Terminal.

I'd prefer a GUI, it's just faster to open it and click a tab than remember a bunch of abstract commands.
Perhaps some people think that showing off their knowledge of terminal commands and hidden items which involve holding down the stupid Option key will help them attract sexual partners. I guess this is some kind of Revenge of the Nerds moment - payback for when Macs were initially dismissed as toys. Now these previously picked on Mac users can proudly argue that MacOS has just as much, if not more hidden things than Windows.

Don't be surprised if Apple removes all Unix access programs like Terminal, Console and Activity Monitor.
Remember after iOS 9 (I think) iOS removed the ability of apps to view background apps (ps processor status).
I don't think it's beyond Apple to eventually close off all access in MacOS 12 or later.
I think other Unix programs like "Port" compiling will disappear and Unix will only be available via virtualization of Linux.

The more I think about this the more I think they will dumb down macOS Unix. Compilers like gcc and raw disk access with dd will be removed.
I doubt the widely used carbon copy cloner and super duper will cross over. Look at how Apple crippled ccc already for boot disk copies in Catalina.
Remember Apple removed "Apple Server" a few macOS versions ago. This is getting future macOS versions ready to be closed.

Terminal commands are inherently scriptable, and that allows everything to be automated, which is critical for environments like cloud services and hyperscaling. Linux had this advantage on day 1.

Windows has gone exactly to this model, moving from MMC to PowerShell. Windows Server Core is an install of Windows which only has a command line. Even advanced configuration of cloud services, like Office 365, can only be done on PowerShell.

Similarly, we have Google Cloud Shell and the AWS Command Line Interface.

Getting rid of the GUI is not "ancient", it's the automation-based world we live in today.

This is a frustrating omission. I used it extensively while troubleshooting my home networks. I hope they come up with a replacement.

All of its features are just command line functions. All still there in the terminal.

I think this is just part of the ongoing dumbing down of macOS . . .

Let's dumb it down by having people that understand what the commands are type them out in a Terminal -more advanced. Let's remove a UI that the average person wouldn't understand and people in the know would use those commands in a terminal. - Dumbing down.... Yeah no....

Really doesn’t make any sense to remove this feature!

Another one gone... First , it was Dashboard in Catalina, and now this?

Just keep removing, and Apple will have a basic OS.... (lol j/k...)

I guess Apple wants people to use the Terminal more, but developers will solve that problem.. They always have.

Of course Apple is using the shell for themselves. What I am saying is that they (Apple) seem to have given up on macOS in the long turn, in favor of iPadOS. Of course "these people" at Apple use the terminal themselves. But that does not mean that they have to still provide it for everyone to use. Or do you believe apple app developers have to work in strict sandboxes, shielded from the OS as well? Or that they do no have any documentation for themselves (that they are nog sharing with the public)? Of course they have loads of private functions, tools and other ways to get things done. They just seem to be taking the next step in only providing in the OS what is strictly necessary for the end users.

It is just an observation. Open your eyes.
