super helpful thread...

Yeah, I think the thing to remember with forums is that they exist to provide a place for discussion. If you start a post stating some position and insisting that your reasoning is infallible, well, that's not a discussion, that's a declaration.

Contrary to the OP's point, I've been on these forums daily since 2003 and I have really enjoyed being a part of the discussion. I have been proven right, proven wrong, given helpful advice, given terrible advice, and everything imaginable in between. I've seen discussions on every topic imaginable, and some you don't want to imagine. People come from all different backgrounds and that is what makes it so interesting.

Although there is obviously a general pro-Mac bias, and a few people who like to stir up the pot, I don't think people here are intolerant in the least.

I like to stir the pot, so long as said pot has beef stew in it :p. This thread (predictably) had exactly the outcome I had expected - lots of people showing their lack of interest in the thread, by POSTING in it. :D

Dawg's Basic Rules to Live By on Internet Forums

1. Never ask for legal advice - unless you are perfectly willing to go to jail
Better choice: talk to a lawyer

2. Never ask for medical advice - unless you are utterly willing to die
Better choice: see a doctor

3. Never ask for financial advice - unless you are completely OK with going broke
Better choice: ask a professional financial planner

4. Never ask for relationship advice - unless you have an abnormal desire to be made fun of, to be ridiculed, to be laughed at, and to be unmercifully abused
Better choice: man up

A wise person speaks, and without a smart*ss attitude!. Wow, that's rare!

I don't think people on the MR forums are intolerant, per say - but I will say that it's very easy to get 'burnt out' of the MR forums. It's usually the same topics and most questions are answered 600 times.

Like with the MBA vs iPad and MBP vs iPad - well if the MBA was more worth it to that person, the OP of the next 'thread to be' could read through the entire thread - and then connect the dots to see that a MBP would be way more valuable than a MBA OR an iPad.

Even though they are different people with completely different ways to use the machines - the same information is applicable. 30 posts later - it's a little drawn out. If someone was a 'real' graphic designer - they wouldn't need to ask an online community about buying an iPad instead of a MacBook pro - it'd be as obvious as it would be for me - a student concentrating in graphic design.

If they are getting a computer to surf the web @ starbucks - well that's fine too, but is a dedicated thread to your situation applicable when there is plenty of research around?

I feel that MR can be very 'spoon fed' at times, in situations like this. I'm trying to to rant here and I hope this isn't read as a super harsh sob story but some of these things are true. I guess I just notice a lot of posts replies specifically written to +1 a user's post count, instead of actual conversation lately. Am I alone on this?

Nope, you're correct entirely. The whole world is becoming overly dependant and "spoon fed" I am afraid. We live in a nanny state here in Britain, and I am sure the USA is not far off in some respects. People are treated like imbeciles, but then they ACT like them a lot - a catch-22.

Use some nouse and self-dependance, and using one's deeper initiative without defaulting to Google & forums breeds the kind of intelligent people we NEED running our planet, instead of the sheep we seem to have, a lot of the time.

What's the point of this thread? I do not see one (?).

It's ironic you dismiss Blue Velvet so quickly considering his/her experience is my experience with forums too. Part of the fun in online forums is how easily people who might never have cross paths can 'meet' and exchange ideas. You can discuss things, such as say audio/visual or mutual games or computers, with people who have a variety of experiences other than yours. You can learn a lot from people and have a good time doing so.

Can they be stressful? Sure, anything can be. I've quit various forums or online activities because they are stressful. You are right here.

But there are a lot more factors involved than solely frustration and problems. I too am one of those who met up in person with some people I met on a forum before. Had a great time, too. So fun to meet people you just never would encounter in your normal life. Not to mention most people on a forum have something in common.

Here are some unsolicited opinions -
1) not everyone online is out to make your day great
2) if things online stress you out, there is a simple solution

Well played my friend and I completely agree. Too bad some won't get it, because it's hysterical. :D

What was that first post saying... --> too late to edit that out.
