I picked up a 14” 10 core with M1 Pro. When I bring it to work I’d like to be able to have it run the two (crummy, 1080p) HP Monitors there. They’re currently hooked up to a Surface hub with USB C out of the hub into the HDMI port of each monitor. Will I be able to plug those two USB C cables into my MBP and have it work?

I too am looking into this. Need to drive 2 monitors (at 60 Hz at least), ideally using a hub providing charging and maybe some USB plugs.
Found some hubs, but nothing too convincing…

Just tried doesn’t work ?
Have you tried in clamshell mode?

Also, to address some of the "chaining" questions - macOS doesn't support MST. Never has. You can't daisy-chain monitors off one port. Each display needs to be connected to one of the display connectors independently.

I was HOPING that the M1 Pro would drive three external monitors if you put it in clamshell mode, but not optimistic.

It's always possible that a dock will give you a USB-based video output, and those should work fine if you don't need it to run natively off the internal GPU.

The LG Ultrafine 4K 23.7” support daisy chaining via Thunderbolt and have two ports specifically for this purpose. As described in this Apple support document

This still works with both the M1 pro and pro max but on the pro you can’t attach any additional monitors natively. Clamshell mode doesn’t make any difference on the m1 pro model, still limited to two external monitors.

You know, as I was tying that I wrote something about how this applies to DP chaining and not TB chaining - as that would then require a TB monitor - but I thought to myself nah, no one would come in and try to confuse DP chaining with TB since I specifically mentioned MST so I ended up deleting it. Silly me I guess.

Yep. It works. No charging of course but it easily drives all three displays with two USB-C to HDMI cables.

Edit:I should add the the image quality is so bad that I may just give up on this anyway. These are not good monitors to be sure, but, as usual, they are much, much worse on MacOS than they are with Windows (off a Surface through the hub into HDMI). Ugh.

How about in clamshell mode?

Edit: I see that it has already been asked.

This saves me buying a $40 cable. I think that I'm going to use my M1 mini in combination with the M1 PRO MacBook Pro. Hopefully they get Universal Control working soon. I can use Synergy in the meantime. I guess I should have ordered a MAX. Current plans are to get a MAX in a couple of years when they put the M3s in them. Rumor has it that there should be substantial performance improvements in that generation, probably due to being on 3 nm and a bigger transistor budget.

Guys, so, a Thunderbolt 4 dock like Kensington with 2 x 4K monitors and another one connected to another port wouldn’t work either?

Does this limitation apply also to an iPad in Sidecar? So lets say, an iPad with Sidecar and 2 external monitors. Can anybody test this?

Sidecar doesn't count as an external monitor. Tested on a M1 Mini with 2 external monitors + sidecar.
Nice! I hope this includes the M1 Pro too (and I don’t see a reason for it not to be), but it would be nice if someone is able to verify it.

Just to confirm this is the same with the M1 pro. You can still use side car as well as the two external monitors. I have tested it.

Is this for the wired sidecar connection, the wireless connection or both?

Awesome, thanks! I do some light video editing work and am between the M1 Pro 14 and M1 Max 14. I've been saving money since the original M1s were announced, but I'm still leaning towards the M1 Pro for better battery life. One thing I'm hung up on is external monitor support, but having sidecar as well should be more than enough.

I know I’m being very picky here, but does anyone know of a docking station I could use to connect 2 additional extended displays and have pass-through charging to an M1 pro which is less than $120? I don’t need any additional ports, just the 2 for the monitors.

This is an intriguing option, thanks! Does it need to have the USB ports on both sides plugged in though? I’m trying to find something where I plug into one USB port and am good to go.

For the HD134 (13”-14” model for 2 external displays), it’s 2 ports on one side. The two ends are coupled together so it’s kinda like plugging in one super fat cable.
