PS: I'm not saying I dislike the 16inch NBP because it's heavier: to the contrary, I hope this is an opportunity for releasing an MBA with a larger display and less performance than the Pro (but I don't hold my breath... I'd love a 16inch MBA but, sadly, I don't think they'll release it).

Currently I have a 15inch 2018 MBP, because I needed a replacement for my 2010 MBA. The 15inch 2018 MBP is half kilogram heavier than the 2010 MBA, which I don't like, but it was the only path I could take (that, or buying the LG gram).

This would honestly be my perfect device.

I like bigger screens because it's comfortable to code on. However, I don't really need all that power; all I'm doing is compiling code and occasionally playing a few games.

Not only metrics unit seem to be hard, math seems to be as well.

If the 2021 MBP were 6 mm thicker than the 2019 model, it would be 16.2 mm + 6 mm = 22.2 mm thick. Which it obviously isn't.
This is making my day! Can you even read???

Agree 100%, but we're in the minority on this forum - losing a 40GBPs Thunderbolt 4 port that can do anything for a single use HDMI port is a disaster, but Apple must have researched this and found there are more people like them, than us.

It's a shame ports aren't module - it would increase the SKU's ten fold, but imagine just being able to pick 4 Thunderbolt 4 ports on both sides and a couple of extra USB-C ports on each side - that'd be perfect expansion.
Do you find it useful to connect 4 Thunderbolt devices to a laptop at the same time? Especially as in that scenario you're hardly mobile, so would likely be using one of them for power anyway.

I am loving the look of the new M1 Max! So glad they put back the ports! I do have questions.
I have my Intel Core i9 16in since December 2020 and it does great! 😊

But...

How long should I wait for the trade in?

How long will it take for the new M1s (16in) to fully replace the intel 16in macbook?

Should I wait until the updates are no longer supported?

And if my macbook decided to break down on me, would I be able to replace it with the M1 Max?

I do want to hold on to my current one for as long as I can since at the time I needed a computer ASAP. But I am open to trade ins and replacing when it is absolutely necessary.

No, it's not like that, at least for me. you need to own one. It's so light that it's not an issue. If it was heavier, it would be, absolutley.

Mind you, I ordered the 16". But the Samsung is very good. I will compare them, and sell one. WTF. I also have an MI Air which is mediocre actually. Powerfull and cool running, but that's it.

They screwed me royally when they axed the MB 12".
PLENTY of the Macs over the last few years had a lot of flex in them. Apple has been valuing thin and light over durability and functionality, for years.

Though it was useful to be able to charge from either sides, unlike left only MagSafe.

Exactly. And even then, the MBA tends to have great performance. Back in 2010, when I was buying the MBA, I had to hide the fact that I was going to run AutoCAD and build code on it, because even Apple employees at the store would tell me that the MBA "was not enough for that". I had done my benchmarks (CPU and GPU) and so I knew it was more than enough for that kind of use (and time proved me right).

The thing is that somehow Apple has not fixed their misconception of "if you want a big display, you want a MBP".

Sorry but no, Apple, I don't need the MBP performance, I want the MBA with a big display and minimum weight (no matter the price -I make Macs last- and no matter the material you choose for that minimum weight --if aluminum is too heavy, then choose another material, like LG did).

You can still charge the new MBPs via the Thunderbolt ports on both sides.
Sure, but that would render Magsafe useless and restrict to 2 free TB ports.
My personal scenario means I’ll have to put back to service my extended power cord on the brick. Not a deal breaker, just inconvenient.
I was hoping for a MagSafe return as a USB-C magnetic adapter…

Well the point is with TB4 though don't have to be TB4 do they? They can be anything you want them to be.

For my live setup I could connect 4 USB devices WITHOUT an dongle or hub, now that can only be 3. Charging does disrupt things a bit, though MagSafe isn't ideal for a live situation.

One factor here might be that Apple seems to struggle with weight...
It's that aluminum that they make everything out of. It's relatively light for a metal, but can't compare with composites, carbon fiber, or heck, tough plastic. My M1 MBA is about a half pound heavier than my Lenovo X1 Carbon, and it does make a difference if you need to carry it around a lot!

I've never known anyone that wanted a bigger, yet light laptop, for focus either. Perhaps a privacy shield behind your laptop?

i feel sorry for the people who drank the apple kool aid in 2016 and bought all USB3 no magsafe, butterfly keyboard, touchbar macbooks. I remember how they claimed the 1 port to rule them all and how they are future safe with USB3. I remember Tim Cook announcing the touchbar as the next big revolution in laptops.

They basically addressed every single complaint by the power users on forums/online.

-faster than anything else in the form factor
-thicker/heavier to priortiize performance and thermals
-legacy IO (HDMI, SD) instead of USB-C so no need to buy new cables and adapters
-10bit screen, 120hz
-notch actually gives you more workspace because the menubar is pushed up inside it
-16" price is same as previous gen, despite the post-covid supply/labor shortage

Only remaining uncertainty is the usualyl buggy garbage that X.0 macOS releases are so that will be fixed overtime and of course herding all the develoeprs to make their workflows comply will take a few years
The design is ugly. One key tenet of Apple is great design. They could have done better. I could care less for the SD Card Slot and HDMI (who uses this today?). The increase in weight will be noticeable. This is a step backward, not forward.

The notch is rediculous, what the hell is wrong with Apple. We stare at the screen 99.9% of the time, just to see a notch for .1% of the time it’s ever used.

what the hell. I mean, how stupid can you be. I mean, at least make it a tiny camera hole, like the Samsung phone.
Why are they so dumb? They make awsome hardware, and then do something as stupid as this.
Classic Apple. intentionally creating controversy and an easy way to satisfy consumers in the future

Am I the only one here that would have traded the HDMI port for literally anything else?

One more USB-C
A single USB-A
literally anything else...

HDMI just seems like a waste of space.
How often are you going to use this HDMI port? Not often! If you need it, bring your dongle! By now, I’m sure all MBP HDMI users own one!

How many times do you use it? Why do I have to 'carry' a port that I never use? An USB-to-HDMI-dongle would do the same thing. That is also the reason why there is -USB-, Universal Serial Bus. Different people, different needs. This HDMI-port wasted an extra USB-port or space for extra battery life or other, more up-to-date, things.
Agree, any MBP owner who actually uses this ancient port already has a dongle for it!

I HAVE to give it up to Tim Cook.

He backpedaled A LOT that pissed pro users off in the MBPs since 2016.

Even if he introduced one thing to piss some off (you all KNOW what it is), he tasked his team to mitigate it via software.

I don't recall an Apple backpedal this big.

For sure, Jony would not have allowed this.
Great step back to preserve future profits when they finally replace the HDMI port with something more functional.
