Something is obviously defective under the screen. Will be an easy return at the Apple Store. Kind of a pain since they don't typically carry your model in stores but they should be able to rush you one if you tell them you need it in a hurry.

Return it and buy a new one. Sorry.

Just did this morning. Apple customer service in-store was second to none and agreed it wasn’t damage caused by myself. They said could have been a defective screen from the factory, or damaged in shipping.

Hoping my new one doesn’t have this issue!

The wait begins!

Wait a minute. You’re telling me that the MacBook that you were told by several people in here that YOU physically damaged it and weren’t hearing any other excuses were wrong? Shocking!!

I bought a MBP 16" almost exactly one month ago and this afternoon when I opened it up to do some work I had the exact same experience as the OP. One single vertical line in the middle of the screen. I restarted several times, reset the SMC (per Apple Support), updated the OS to 10.15.2, and it got progressively worse over the course of the evening both in the visible damage and the way the machine acted. Now I can't even login and only get a black screen with a sliver of light in the middle of the screen. No drops, dropkicks, lid closing on something, impacts, nothing.

I have a Genius Bar appointment set up for the next available date...Saturday. Oh well. You'd think $5K would get you a longer lifespan than one month.

I bought a 16" MBP on 2nd December.
No issues until this morning when I woke it up to find a vertical line of dead pixels near the centre of the screen which wasn't there when it went to sleep last night.
Like others here, mine has been treated with kid gloves (and it hadn't moved at all overnight).
Luckily I'm still within the extended return period.
It's annoying & inconvenient, but it makes me wonder whether to hold off getting the same model until I know if this is a more widespread issue that Apple needs to address.

Yeah, I'm not sure I'd mention to apple that it worked at first... I don't assume that the OP broke the screen, but there's no question at all that it's a broken LCD, behind the surface glass. I'd return it ASAP and hope the next one hasn't been dropped. The fact that it worked without problems when they first turned it on is a real head-scratcher. - Nevermind, looks like you got it taken care of. Is this a new set of defects, since more folks are reporting the same problem?

Well to update my post above I took it to the Apple store and the person there at the Genius Bar wrote up a long document to pass along to the next step in the Apple repair process. She said that although she believed that it wasn't my fault that it 100% looked like I dropped it and that if she didn't write it up in a convincing way that I'd have to pay $100 to have it repaired (under Apple Care) due to user fault. It was sent and I had it back in about 7 days without having to pay anything.

Somewhat hesitantly I will say that I had a camera cover on it like this....

...the "damage" I had was directly underneath the camera and these covers. She said that it *could* have been that causing the issue but neither of us really thought it would crack the screen especially considering I treat this thing as the expensive 3rd child that it is.

To be safe though I have now reverted back to my small square of blue painters tape to cover the camera instead of this little accessory.

To reinforce your curiosity profcutter....mine worked fine for one month before the issue arose. No drop, no impact, nothing.

Yeah, I believe it, it’s just odd. I worry that the LCD substrate they’re using may be more delicate than displays in the past. And yeah, the placement matches your camera cover, but what a bummer if that’s enough to damage the panel.

There isn’t much clearance between the screen and case. I’ve always seen it mentioned to never use these covers on any of the retina models. there are small black circular web cam stickers on Amazon that I use. They are easily remove and reapply too.

Not to mention they're kind of pointless since you can't just turn the webcam on without the LED lighting up...
