This week I ordered the 16" (2.3 i9, 32gb, 5500 8gb and 1TB ssd) but have not added AppleCare right away as you can also buy this later.

I'm wondering what anyone else's thoughts are on the value v/s cost of AppleCare with this new machine with the new more reliable keyboard. Is it worth the 400 dollar price tag?

Here in the Netherlands you already get 2 years of warranty by law if I'm not incorrect. Furthermore I have an allrisk insurance that covers also accidental damage for anything in my household including laptops.

So about the household insurance - I once tried to claim a broken phone screen on household insurance in Ireland. They company wanted me to send them the phone so they could get it assessed and it would not come back to me for two months.... 😳 I just paid myself to get new screen. Maybe its not like this in The Netherlands but maybe ask around folks you know for their experiences with this.

Is it though? I'm not sure if I see the value. It's $379 and an additional $300 for any accidental damage other than the display. So for any damage you're already out $679. I know it extends the factory warranty as well for any issues that may not be user induced but that's still A LOT of money for a what-if.

it’s wise for what “insert”-gate that is to come on the MBP 16 and it’s way to early to say... but this might just be the best MBP of the new decade to come

+1 for AppleCare being worth it. The non apple care prices for repairs are much more than $300. And you get the additional year (over the Dutch 2 years).

It's insurance, hope to never have to use it but it's nice to know your covered.

I think Apple Care is good for piece of mind and especially resale if you sell the laptop 6 months prior to expiration.

I have purchased it in the past and I can't recall ever using it. I did not buy it on the laptop I'm using now so as I'm getting ready to upgrade to the 16", I guess I can factor that savings in but it's a gamble.

I don't take my laptop out of the house that often but it does get banged around allot, I have fumbled it to the floor more than once but for the first time ever, I decided to put a protective case on it when I bought it and I will always do that from now on! I bought a Tech21 Clear Case so it's almost like not having one (aesthetically).

Insurance is for calamities, meaning things you wouldn't be able to afford to replace if SHTF. All of a sudden these days everything is offered with insurance, including ordering a ****ing pizza?

You can probably afford to replace/fix your laptop, and as it is, you already have two years of coverage.

Hard pass.

If nothing else, you'll probably be able to get a battery out of it close to the 3 year point.
Get coconutbattery app and keep running it. I think if ur battery capacity drops below 80% then its new battery time. Setup a siri reminder too for 2.5 years from now.

I always thought it was a good idea for any issues that come with a new design, but Apple have extended the warranty automatically for issues such as the keyboards, so it is almost the reverse. There may be less need for Applecare with a new design.

Since it comes with accidental protection now, I think it's worth it.

I mean I don't drop or do stuff that warrants needing that kind of protection (because my data is more important than the hardware), but having the peace of mind is good.

Of course this coming from the guy who has a 2016 MacBook Pro with AppleCare that has never needed service, not even with the keyboard. I do like the butterfly keyboard.

I bought AppleCare for 2 of my last 3 machines and both of the AppleCare-covered laptops needed major repairs in the 2nd or 3rd year... I've been lucky I guess :) Definitely getting it for my next MBP especially since it looks like it covers accidental damage too now.

It's a brand new design...there is bound to be issues with the new screen or keyboard.

It’s not really a new keyboard - thank god

Personally I would just try to buy with a credit card that gives you an extra year of protection and stick with those two years.

That third year I just don’t think is worth it for what they ask for AppleCare.

But it’s your money so do whatever you care to obviously.

I’m debating getting Applecare for the new 16” as well. In the past, I purchased it and have used it but it seems like more recent Apple purchases have been more and more reliable. I haven’t had a need for repair in years now.

What makes me question it is the fact that this is a new design. New (old) keyboard, etc.

I believe you have to buy it within 60 days of purchase. It’s expensive, but given that it is a portable machine, I decided it was worth it for me.
Yep. It's more than I want to spend for insurance, but it's worth it if you're going to keep it for a long time.

I bought my first MacBook Pro 15 in 2010, and used the Apple Care a few times for issues that likely would have been costly without. On the other hand, I have a 2016 Macbook retina 12 inch for work that doesn't have Apple care, and the only thing I have had to replace so far was a keycap (knock on wood). A coworker has the same machine, and his has a trackpad/force touch issue that they want ~$400 to fix out of warranty. It's kind of a gamble, but given that this model is brand new in production, it is probably a good idea.
