New 2.1 GPS LocationServices on/off is a HUGE battery drain! What were they thinking?

The point here is that APPLE has made it less safe! They have now made dangerous what used to be safe! Regardless of philosophy on whether you should use GPS while driving or not, this latest move by Apple will ulimately result in deaths. I'm not sure what Apple is thinking, but this looks grim.

How could you possibly blame Apple when somebody does something unsafe while driving.

Th fact that they changed how the GPS switches on or off has nothing to do with somebody doing something unsafe while they are driving.

You have to take responsibility for your won actions.

exactly. i have it turned on and battery lasts for hours with gps use

The new software suspends GPS during screenlock,
so no reason to have location services off. If your battery is dying that fast then you have a faulty battery or you are using the real battery drainer; 3G.
Also, location services only works when polled by an app that is active. Leaving it on does NOT mean it is always running. This is well known among the developers of GPS related apps.
Check the thread on battery life, which most have found has greatly improved since the update. Mine has never been better.

The location services switch disables applications if you accidentally agreed to them knowing where you are. It doesn't leave it on constantly - what would be the point? No applications run in the background, so there's nothing to do with that information.

This is just disinformation. Duckspeak.

Thanks for the tip Spaz as I am sure you have posted it too many times to count.

Is that sarcastic or are you really thankful? It is recommended to drain the battery completely once every few weeks just to keep the battery indicator accurate, but the iPhone loves being plugged in. My battery is never dead because I use my iPhone as an iPod in the car using the Dock connector that connects to my cigarette lighter that connects to the AUX port in the back of my CD player. This gives me the best sound possible out of the iPhone and also charges the battery. Since I have a first gen iPhone, the charger works because it uses Firewire to charge.

Nope, no sarcasm intended at all. I know the subject of these batteries is well documented on here.

I have a car charger for it as well and sometimes hook that up and then hook up a cable from the headphone jack to the aux port in my Titan.

I have finally just said eff it and I am keeping 3G and Location Svcs on.

It is annoying to have to turn stuff on and off all the time.

If you are, in fact correct, then this thread is over. I just hope you are correct. If I am not actively, consciously using the GPS chip, I want it OFF.

I've never turned location services off a single time since I got the phone on launch day. Or 3G or wifi or any other battery saving measures. And my battery life has been just fine. The same or better than what people report on this forum. I guess I'm just lucky.

Thank you for the feedback. :)
