^ Actually this made me think of something

And I can't see where I can set the audio to come out of optical and HDMI at the same time...
If I can't do that then i'm stuck. I either get 1080p but audio to only one piece of equipment, or audio to both (by routing through my amp) but then limited to 720p.. :mad:

Not saying this is an elegant solution, I prefer to route all my hdmi through my AVR too. But in the interim you could do HDMI > TV | Audio out > Toslink | Toslink > splitter > TV + AVR

This way you have 1080p to the TV but multichannel audio to both sources, simultaneously, without having to switch back and forth in the sys prefs.

@jwhazel,

thanks for that comprehensive reply. It does look that my AVR might not like computer versions of HD resolutions. There *must* be something different in how they handle HDMI though - if it was identical to a CE device the AVR should be fine.

this is my cloudy memory, but I think I've run 1080p from my 2007 GMA950 mini through the amp, but 99% of the time I was running 720p so I can't be certain. maybe only 1080p/24 which *does* work.

don't think my TV has an optical input - just an optical out for the onboard tuner out to an amp.

Even HDMI out to TV and then optical out from TV to amp might not pass multichannel.

I think its either - mini to amp in 720p and keep an eye out on if it gets patched; or mini to TV and optical to amp and always use the amp. Not so bad for movies for for the odd quick episode of Father Ted its a bit much
