They are already in it. I think it's more about the right moment for a retina display that works with all (most) Macs and the DisplayPort.

Apple's been putting old GPUs in most of their lineup so how exactly will they support 4K or 5K with POS GPUs?

All you Mac hockey puck mini fans been complaining for years! Now your still complaining! Be happy they didn't kill your cheap machine! GO MAC PRO and Skylake!!!!!!

Intel Iris HD 5100 Graphics.

Here's a little info for you. :

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Intel-Iris-Graphics-5100.91977.0.html

"The performance of the Iris Graphics 5100 is about 20 percent above the HD Graphics 5000, which can be found in ULV CPUs of the 15W class. In a best case scenario, the IGP machtes a dedicated GeForce GT 640M LE. In other cases, however, the performance is only at the level of the GeForce GT 620M due to the limited memory bandwidth. Current games (as of 2013) can be played fluently in low or medium detail settings and a resolution of 1.024 x 768 or 1.366 x 768 pixels.

Due to the 22nm 3D Tri-Gate production process, power consumption should be relatively low. The Iris Graphics 5100 can be found on certain ULV dual-core Haswell models in the 28 Watt TDP range."

It's the same as the Late 2013 Macbook Pro Core i5 integrated graphics.

Bummer. I'd gathered that the Intel Iris Pro 5200 has roughly double the performance of the 5100. For a computer that I'd like to have around for a couple years at least, this refresh just doesn't cut it.

It's looking to possibly match the performance of my 3.5 year old iMac, which I'd like to get rid of because I have it hooked up to an HDTV for work and play, and I never use the iMac's display. In fact, having the extra display is actually a detriment because one cannot completely dim the iMac's display, and there are long standing multi-monitor bugs in OS X. I do not applaud Apple for forcing their loyal customers toward the iMac by nerfing the Mac Mini. Thumbs down.

Another year, another tiny "upgrade", another product needlessly crippled for profit... another indifferent "Meh".

I don't believe the soldered RAM yet. There are a number of other sites and people that have talked to apple that contradict it. It's possible yes but I think it's most likely that this guy figured there was a 50 50 chance and claimed it to be true so if he was right it would make a name for himself to be a reliable "source". That is what it sounds like to me.

Also about the quad for stuff...in another thread a user posted benchmarks of the dual cores in the 13 inch Mbp vs the quad 2012 mini. And the quad was a small bit slower. Yes of course id like a quad haswell with iris pro 5200 but I am willing to bet the 2014 chip out performs the 2012 one in most benchmarks. Not by the margin we d like and not for the price premium but yeah.

"Available in any colour, as long as it's silver"

Apple - wake up - life is about COLOUR! VIBRANCY! PERSONALITY! CHOICE!

I look at my FLOURESCENT GREEN Lumia, and think "Thank GOODNESS for personality AND FUN!"

Apple... You aren't helping any PC versus Mac debates with this...

actually it isn't likely to make a difference. The Mac Mini isn't meant to be a power machine for those that like to hack their stuff. It has always been positioned as a transition machine for those that don't want to have to buy a new monitor etc cause they have the one from their HP etc tower.

chances are that Apple has numbers to back up how many folks were getting the higher end, especially the server and it really wasn't that many folks. a cheap linux box would probably be preferred over a mac mini for many folks.

Not aware of any capitalist company that doesn't (especially the publicly traded ones), though strangely it appears to surprise people, especially on this forum (which used to have a much higher average IQ before the trolls descended<ha!>), that Apple actually likes the profit.

Really, Apple just looks worse because they're better at getting more money. If Dell did this, nobody would buy it, but they'd do it if they could get away with it like Apple can.

Welcome to the Apple appliance device generation. Grab a stool and a bucket - you're all getting MILKED.

16GB is always enough on a PC (heck I use 6GB), but I'd be worried about scalability on a server. I exhausted our Mac mini server's RAM (4GB) running Time Machine AFP hosting, HTTP hosting, a proxy, a VPN, a virtual FreeBSD machine, 3 Minecraft servers, and other stuff. Add more of the same things, and you'll eventually need 16GB. Or if my iPhone app gets popular enough that the FreeBSD VM needs more RAM for the server-side task...

More importantly, it would be a shame for the whole computer to be toast because of a failed RAM stick. Or it would at least cost way more time and effort to fix it. On a tower computer, there's no excuse for anything to be inaccessible.

exactly .. for a pc 16GB is too much (at the moment), that was my whole point :) ...

Lame Apple.

I don't know what else other than they probably get a lot of tech support calls from people that install cheap 3rd party memory in these and it costs too much to handle calls that the customer could have avoided by installing Apple memory instead because this is a low end Apple product and customers typically try to save a buck by installing cheap 3rd party memory.

That's what I referred to as the right moment, it's not now. Currently it requires dual display ports to drive one screen.

The 2012 mini with a quad core processor is looking more attractive than the new ones.

Just bought a quad core one on ebay about 3 months ago that was only a couple of weeks old. Added a 512gb mx100 hoping that the new ones weren't coming out soon, but now that they have I'm glad I got it when I did, because not only is the ram not soldered but it the new ones can't have a normal ssd added, let alone a half terabyte ssd for $200. Only downside is that the iris 5000 would have been good, but the upside is the software I use is mainly processor powered not gpu powered. So I'm pretty happy with the 2012 imac and I think when I come to sell it that it's resale value just went up too.

"Dear consumer - don't worry about the complicated, `technical` task of plugging a card into a slot - we did the hard part for you, to ensure your (already) numb mind remains that way"

There therrrre, don't you worry your little head over it - Apple's taken care of it alllllll...

I guess it'd be okay for mail, but it looks to me like a $500 Brick.

Soldered, miserly RAM, a small, slow hard drive (where do they find these things, is there a closeout warehouse full of them in China?) and a crippled processor? There are people who won't know they need more RAM when they make the initial purchase, because all those happy, shiny Apple people will tell them how great it is to be a part of the "Apple" family (of suckers). I guess they'll still get Apple stickers, so it's all good.

Wonder how many first-time Apple users will be impressed by this sorry little step backwards. Some people only have $500 to spend on a computer, why abuse them? I can only imagine how this thing will creep along on commonly used (and bloated) software like Microsoft Office.

I guess the margins are never high enough for Apple.

Thanks, Phil, why don't you get back to "innovating". Next time you announce a Mini I'm going to see if you spend more than a minute, and indicate in any fashion you're actually proud of the product, I'll see you in three years.

Nice. But I live in Vegas so I tend to look for better odds than 50/50. Can you at least give me 60/40 odds? :)
