Thing is, that says it WILL have it - where is the follow up? I participated in that thread.

I'm really interested in if it's working well and, more importantly, technical details around how it is pulled off.

I was under the impression that the 5 series with wireless carplay was released and available for purchase, but I'm not entirely sure and it may be an upcoming model. I'm also highly interested in it, but I plan on buying a Tesla Model S next year when my lease is up and they don't even have wired carplay, sigh...

I have a Volvo with wired CarPlay and it was one of the first cars to actually ship with it - but they're not even close to wireless CarPlay yet. Up until my car came along, there was news about how this car and that car would have CarPlay, but most of them never got it until much, much later than announced. And I'd love to know how that BMW thing turned out, all news around it has dried up and I'm not so sure it actually happened.

There are reviews out: https://www.usatoday.com/story/mone...-series-sedan-excels-apple-carplay/101252788/ This guy liked it, but said it ate up a ton of battery on his iPhone. I think this will be a lot better when Apple finally comes out with wireless charging.

That review makes me wonder how wireless CarPlay works even more than before. Is it using AirPlay? I know Bluetooth can't support the bandwidth required for CarPlay. And if so, when he uses Spotify is he running both the WiFi and LTE radios at the same time, and is that what's dragging on the battery? Still trying to get a handle on what a car will need to "upgrade" from wired to wireless CarPlay.

I was under the impression that wireless CarPlay will be over WiFi, but I’m not sure.

I don't own a GoldWing, so yes, perhaps my "gimmick" remark was not accurate. I was going off of my friends opinion of the heater (he is a GoldWing rider). For me, the heated grips and seat have been more than sufficient on cold days. I also have the "directed air AC" on my Ultra and although they are nice during hotter days, once it gets about 85 or so, hot air is just hot air.

The biggest complaint for me, as was also true for GoldWings, was the inability to pair a bluetooth headset to the system. Only wired systems work (not including the freewire modules). Now that GoldWing has adopted something different (I assume bluetooth headsets work with the new unit), hopefully HD will move forward as well. I don't mind the HD nav system, but I've ridden cross country 3 times on my bike and I haven't had too much bad luck in terms of cell coverage. But you're right, it is nice to have sat radio and built-in/pre-loaded nav maps in places where cell reception doesn't reach!

Bluetooth was just one of about 25 different reasons why I was going to trade in my 2000 GoldWing SE for a BMW 1600 GTL. GoldWings, electronically and even the motor were getting waaaay behind. Yes they were dependable. But for the size they were severely under powered and had a lot less torque than the smaller BMW.

I’m not a racer. I’ve never been someone that goes fast just to go fast on winding roads. But at the same time, GoldWings, while highly maneuverable, have a lot of mass which makes them far slower at being able to get out of the way of someone who doesn’t see you. A flick of the wrist on the BMW will have you going 40 or 50 mph faster than you were going. Meanwhile the GoldWing *maybe* picked up 10 mph and maybe not that. 200 pounds heavier with a lot less torque and power and I almost got t-boned several times and I watch for people who might not be stopping at stop signs and red lights.

Yes the 1800s had better electronics than the 1500s. But it was a baby step. But then old people don’t like change so Honda probably kept the changes smaller because of that.
