Thanks for the info but I have another question which I think may have already been answered by dantay as he's had 10 returns but do Apple keep shipping new iMac's until you are happy there is no bleed and no gradient issue?

In the UK you have 14 days to return for any reason.....thats both mail order and apple retail stores. Sometimes they will just offer a refund and then you buy again. I'm gonna have one last go on the new iMac 3.06 and if thats not at least acceptable (small amount of bleed and little or no gradient) then I will go down the Pro and Cinema route. I posted in another thread that this new unit also has very loud inverter buzz.....seems now the new new iMacs have an added 'feature' 🙄

HEE HEE 😀 That's a whole new debate discussed to death on MacRumurs and many other forums.
Personally, I'm satisfied(and that's the most important thing for me) with the 23 ACD. Yes they might be expensive but I least I knew what I was getting. I paid my money and took my choice 😎 and have no regrets.
Despite what other LCD brands there are out there, in my experience the matte 23"ACD is a lot more comfortable to use than the glossy 24" iMac. But I must stress here that this is my own personal preference and each to their own.
LOL! I feel I am working as secondary QC as primary QC seems to be pretty non existant in China! I'd be over the moon to get a decent unit and put this to bed. The Sony Vaio all in one is pretty cheese-tastic and is obviously running crappy Vista so I have the iMac option or like £2,300 on a MacPro and Cinema 23" so I keep on going! My mates all take the p*ss and say get a Dell! NEVER!

i say keep going! i think everyone would do the same thing as you if they could, including myself, but i need my computer everyday for my home business, so i can't keep sending it back, even though i wish i could and know i should. obviously apple knows this, and are certainly making more money from sales, which more than cover the cost for returns/fixing.
i'm (now reluctantly) buying a new 24" iMac tonight, and this thread has me a touch paranoid...
Are you getting a 3.06? Let us know when you receive it how bad the bleed/gradient is.

i'm getting the 2.8GHz, but i'm assuming the 24" panels are the same so i'll post any issues i have. although i have to admit, i have a matte white Core 2 Duo from 2006, and the screen isn't perfect like people say it is... there is a slight gradient issues and yellow hues on these as well, or there can be at least, like on mine. it's the 17" panel though, so i wonder if Apple has been installing cheaper displays for smaller size iMacs for longer than just last year?
The 17" of the prev gen iMacs had a TN panel.....much the same as in the new Alu 20" and they suffer from other issues as you have mentioned. TN panels suffer from poor viewing angles and cant reproduce millions of colours without using dithering.

oh interesting... i totally didn't know that... i mean, i noticed the viewing angles were always problematic, but i was under the impression that the TN panels everyone is talking about were exclusive to the 20" alu iMacs... so i guess bleed or no bleed, the new 24" iMac's screen should be much better than the one i have now...
(i'm not anti-gloss/matte-queen) 🙄
Oh for sure....it will be a big step-up.....it would be a fantastic screen if there wasn't the light bleed.....if you get a good-ish one i'm sure you'll love it 😀
Wanting to test my current TFT(Formac 1900 Oxygen) for bleeds and gradients to see how common they are in other monitors I can honestly say I have no bleed or no gradient.
If this is such a massive problem why aren't Apple doing more about it?

i would think apple looks at this as a non-issue... i can see their point, but at the same time, it's crazy to spend $2,000 on a new iMac and have a non-issue issue...
that being said, my old G3 iMac from the 90s was on death's bed for about a year before it finally quit... that old CRT screen turned all sorts of crazy hues and i managed to get use to that... i think a lot of people would just get use to the inconsistency of the black... i mean, is it really that noticeable anyway? certainly it can't be worse than the viewing angles of TN panels, which i'm totally use to.

It is not possible to correct display non-uniformities with
software alone. Some professional monitors use software
to improve uniformity -- but that also requires specialized
display hardware and individual measurement/calibration
of each LCD panel assembly.

i'm literally shocked... i just got home from the Apple Store in Laval and i'm using a new 24" iMac and there is a blue color cast over 1/5 of the left side of the screen, and both left and right edges are darker... this is a $2000+ computer?!. also, there are patchy bleeds around the bottom of the screen which are noticable when the screen is all black...
guess i'll have to return this one 😕 🙁

Some people think it could be due to the speakers in the system,well,anybody out there which has this bleeding problem and is technical enough to open up the iMac and remove the speakers and then try again if it's still there.
Just an idea.

Do you think if you went into an Apple Store to buy an iMac they would let you unbox it and try it out until you found a screen without any issues?
You'll be unboxing them all day! They ALL have bleed at the base of the screen left and right hand side and a nasty spread of light coming from the top left corner......I dont think its to do with the speakers as to the best of my knowledge magnets no not effect LCD screen.....well not on the same way they do with CRT technology.....if some one else knows better please say. I honestly think its the way the backlight reflector is attatched to the back of the panel and its nipped up too tight at the base of the screen on the left and right hand sides.....or maybe its fine outside of the iMacs enclosure but once screwed into the aluminium enclosure it is distorting the assembly enough to produce the bleed. I dont think LG-Phillips would churn out all these dodgy panels so my money is on the way they are attached to the iMacs case.
All the units I have seen have darker edges (some with a yellow tinge on a white screen) The blue colour cast is a new one to me but that could be the gradient others are talking about? The left hand side is always brighter, its only ok-ish if you ramp the backlight up to full but then as I said the bleed is REALLY bad. 🙁

I just wonder if I have the trained eye to see the issues or whether hopefully if the issues are there I just wont be able to see them.

to be honest, if i did have a trained eye in color, i would say my screen is fine... i'm willing to be that all those people on other threads stating their screens are fine are not trained in color and just don't see it... so i guess ignorance is bliss afterall 😛
