There is something wrong with your M2 Mac, if it’s anything close to sluggish.

What exactly is sluggish? A lot of people equate their Internet speed to their computers speed. If your Internet connection is running slowly, perhaps troubleshoot your Wi-Fi.
That's just it - the internet is great and it's cable broadband. Have tested with other computers on same connection, speed tests + downloading the same pages and there is definitely something slower on this Mac Mini. Safari is a lot faster, however so there is possibly some incompatibility with Chrome browsers?

Even so though, my older iMac with same meory - 8Gb seems more responsive.

I strongly disagree. X86 lives and will live for long time hopefully. Making assumptions only because Apple tries to force you to change architecture does not negate fact the rest of the world will still use Windows on x86. And I believe the day will come when market force Apple to abandon M chips as well
Coming from a fully loaded 2017 imac the Mac minis speed frankly blows me away. I’ve used 2019 and 2021 intel iMacs at work and barely could tell a dif from my 2017 but the M chips are wow

Is the Chrome install that you have the X86_64 or the ARM release?

Wait you’re are only talking about speed of webpages opening in Chrome? If your only issue is in Chrome and Safari works fine then it’s a problem with Chrome.

If it’s just Chrome make sure you have the correct version as foo2 said. Also maybe try clearing the browser cache.
