People wanted redesigned. The same front design since October of 2009.

Well, I'm perfectly fine with the design. I'm actually glad they didn't change the design.

The iMac is still the best looking and coolest PC you can get. It's very classy and stylish in its design. Perfectly purposly built, and now with the iMac Pro around the corner the fastest workstation in a coolest design.

Unfortunately, it's obscenely expensive for its mid-range components :( 2600 € for an Intel i5, 8 GB RAM and and an AMD 580 – a 200 € CPU and a 260 € GPU. 8 GB RAM in 2017, seriously?

add 1400 EUR for 5K LG UltraFine monitor, 70 EUR for 8 GB RAM, 100 EUR for quality 2 TB HDD, 80 EUR for quailty 128 GB SSD flash and you are on 2110 EUR

Some people I know only check e-mail and browse the internet, so 8 GB is fine for them.

Why those people you speak of would buy a brand new 27 inch iMac to check email blows me away just as much as Apple selling these machines with crippled specs.

How about a mid-range 4k IPS monitor for 400-500 € for 80% of the utility of the 5K LG monitor and 1000 € in the pocket? :)

Don't forget case with Thunderbolt 3 IO, power supply, webcam, and a whole mess of cables to connect everything. Plus a copy of Windows and time to set all of this up.

Apple doesn't make every possible configuration, a 27" 4K monitor might be nice for some people but it doesn't align with their strategic vision. They want either normal scaling or 'Retina', nothing in between, a 4K 27" screen is not 'Retina' and as such doesn't fit into their model of image scaling. Yes you can choose non-retina scaling but that isn't the default and is even hidden behind a toggle these days.
A 27" iMac would be far less expensive if they still sold the 1440p screen from 2013 for those who don't want the 'Retina' screen. They did this for the first year of Retina, the terrible Tim Cook practice of selling last years model for a reduced price was used on the 2013 iMac to sell a 27" 2013 model until the price of the Retina model fell enough the they discontinued the 2013 model in the fall of 2015 instead of the fall of 2014 when the first retina model was introduced.

I actually would prefer an all Retina lineup as it makes more cohesive sense, even if it is more expensive, and it makes it easier for developers to target newer machines if they all use roughly the same scaling factor for retina assets.

I actually priced out a PC before buying my iMac, and given that I wanted to go Retina, having lived with retina every where else my previous iMac was the last non-retina holdout, the iMac was the easiest way of getting a 27" retina screen for a reasonable price. The LG and HP 5K monitors are possible but don't save much money over going with the iMac, and building a PC and dealing with the hassle of keeping macOS up to date is something I don't want to deal with.

For the price, at least here in Canada, the new iMacs are competitive, especially if you value your time and would rather use a computer than spend the multiple hours setting a Hackintosh up. Further the iMac has apple care+ now which is a nice bit of insurance against accidental damage.

I am not sure why you're saying that these specs are within the VR requirements arent they?

They will meet the bare minimum. But as VR users have commented ad-nauseum, these specs will not be sufficient going forward. You need performance in excess of 10 GBPS (compared to the 580's 6.2). Essentially, the 580 is equivalent to the last years middle of the line card (GTX 1060).

But can it run crysis?

Name one 'good' VR game???

My favorite is il-2 Sturmovik. If you like combat flight sims, your mind will be blown. 100% guaranteed. But to illustrate my point, this game can even bring the top line cards (1080ti) to their knees on ultra settings.

A game with more general appeal would be Robot Recall. Also mind blowing.

Trust me. VR is the future. Anyone who has experienced it on a decent gaming rig will know what I am talking about. The naysayers will call it a fad and try and compare it to 3d. But they don't know what they are talking about.

Still comes with spinning hard drives and bezels on a non-touch screen.

(Not asking for a touch-display but the fact that it has fat bezels while even iPads squeeze those bezels is questioning which rather is a touch-screen)
Who cares about bezels on a desktop computer.

Small bezels on a mobile device is more that a fashion statement: It's about maximizing display size while minimizing overall bulk.

No need for that on a desktop display/computer.

I see now why eGPUs are being so hotly discussed. Thanks for this clarification.

Two words: multiple displays

Smaller bezels allow a better experience when splitting windows across multiple displays.
Further a bezel-less but ticker iMac wouldn't compromise on performance (perhaps even helping in that department).

I do wonder if the thicker bezel lets Apple taper off the edge of the iMac to a thinner point. Is the space behind the bezel at the sides actually used or is it dead space? How thick would the edge appear if the edge of the iMac was at the edge of the display?

Well only if you have the cheap model, I got the £2569 option and the GPU and CPU on the equivalent 2017 model is like 5% better if that... but it's also way more expensive now than to price rises and Brexit price rises.
