Now they were the days, I loved my Amiga 500. Had it set up in my bedroom and spent days playing Monkey Island along with Formula One Grand Prix.

Just look at those graphics...beautiful! 16 FPS - lightning fast!

That picture brought back so many memories, i played that game for hours :D

I remember when I had a 64GB HDD in my Mac when I was a young lad!!
I remember when we got a new Mac performa and it had a 1Gb hard drive and I thought there was no way we could ever fill it in my lifetime.

Come to the darkside! Windows 10 isn't so bad. I know. :)

I spend most of my time in Chrome, Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom and Premiere, Microsoft Word and Excel, etc... which are the same sorta programs I'd use on a Mac. And that's why we use computers... to run programs... right? You don't really notice the OS once you're working inside an app.

There are, of course, plenty of nifty little Mac-only utilities... but I never feel like I'm "missing" something on Windows.

And the best part... I upgraded my tower and got a new motherboard, CPU, RAM and a cooler for around $800. The machine is a beast! I kept my case, power supply, video card and monitors (which I got to choose myself from a previous build... no one will tell me what hardware I can and cannot use!)

I'm not exactly sure where it ranks compared to an iMac or Mac Pro... but it's still a beast and it didn't cost an arm and a leg. Intel i7-4790K and 16GB of RAM. BEAST

Mac laptops are amazing... but Apple's desktops leave a lot to be desired. They're either too small (Mac Mini)... too much (Mac Pro)... or possibly the wrong form-factor (iMac all-in-one)

I guess that's why people have been begging for the mythical headless xMac for years. Surprise... there are some people who want desktop-class CPU and GPU at an affordable price. They don't want appliances built with non-upgradable laptop parts.

If you're a Mac user who wants a desktop computer... unfortunately you have some oddball choices.

I always wonder why Windows people come to a Mac-enthusiast forum. If your "dark side" is so good then why be here? At times Windows people appear to be threatened by so many people that have cut Windows out of there life and have been enjoy the Mac experience. And they say Mac users have a cult.

I think the 5400rpm HDD is the part that needs upgrading.

I'm as frustrated as the next guy about that but based off the pics of the tear down it actually looks pretty easy to replace. I think if I get the new iMac I'll get the 4K with a hard drive and immediately put in a 512gb SSD myself.

Their RAM prices are reasonable. Check out other sources for the same capacity RAM. 16GB chips are expensive as there aren't a lot of them currently.
Ah ok. I guess I've never really looked at prices for those since I'm really not in the market for 16GB chips.

Most users here don't need 64GB Ram, but what they do need is 64GB storage standard on iOS devices :)
I bought my iMac in 2012 and stuffed it with 16gig which was the max for the 21 inch iMac. 3 years later and the max is the same and still DD3. I don't need more memory and I doubt 90% will ever even try to upgrade their memory so I am not too worried about the soldering. The 16gig limit and the ddr3 however, is really not good.

In an effort to save money, and ensure they can continue to sell as many additional cars as possible,
Apple will be soldering the asses of drivers into their iCars upon purchase.

"New iMac can support up to 64 GB RAM."

OWC: "We'll sell you over-priced upgrades!!!!!! LOLZ!!!!"

"...but the RAM is soldered to the motherboard..."

OWC: "........"

not buying until they bring Target Display Mode back. Love the 5K screen, but I want to see other things on it other than the computer inside it. The computer becomes obsolete, but an extra screen will stay useful for a very long time.

Same here.. Though I'm generally against all-in-ones, the 27" iMac is looking like something I wouldn't mind replacing my aging 2007 Mac Pro with, but lack of Target Display Mode is a dealbreaker. I need to be able to connect my work laptop to the screen for days when I work from home.

I wish Apple would make a machine with the hardware of a top-end iMac but with no screen. Since they haven't and probably aren't, Target Display Mode was a reasonable compromise. I'm hoping this is a temporary situation.

Upgradeability is one thing, non serviceability is another. Soldered ram, proprietary drives, glue, guarantees the obsolescence of Apple computers outside the limited Applecare monopoly - to the landfills.. it's not user or environmentally friendly, nor is it economically friendly for third party industries, education, and repurposing computers for less affluents than the rose gold fashion set.

Don't be silly. I recall a video explaining how they reduced the size of the shipping boxes because they are a green company.

Folks, nothing about Apple's prices are reasonable at all. So I don't want to hear about reasonable RAM prices. Hell, the $100 keyboard should keep you from thinking that way. Go back to the old price and I'll provide my own rechargeable batteries thank you.

The iMacs do not come with PCI SSD that runs at 2GB/s, please stop embarrassing yourself.

And how do you justify the ridiculous drop in SSD size for the 1TB fusion drive? too expensive for apple to maintain the 128GB SSD that came with previous models? Please. just admit that apple is cutting corners.

Apple is about the bottom line, just like every company. It seems they are cutting more corners now under Tim. If Apple thought it could charge you double what it charges now and people would still buy, they would charge you double. There hasn't been a revolution over 16GB storage on iDevices, so they keep it up. They probably thought about offering 8GB, but thought that would be too much of a corner cut. But I'll bet they thought about it.

I may be old, but do you really need 16GB->64GB RAM? What is it used for?
Or is software bloated today?

Today, average user probably doesn't need more than 8GB, and even power users use much less than 16GB of RAM. 64GB is only for certain niche applications and/or the person is running multiple VMs. However, if the person is running VMs, there are better computers (i.e. Hackintosh / PC) than an iMac.

Ouch on the 21.5... Looks like I'll pass on this one. My Late 2012 is humming along fine and just a few months back I was able to upgrade to a SSD and the 16gb myself (although was painful). I kinda wanted to get the better screen and pass down my 2012, but not if it is going to be $1900+ ($1499 + $200 for 256 Flash + $200 to 16gb).

This doesn't surprise me at all.

Look at it this way - they are approaching the Mac line much like the iPhone line:

-The iMac base model 21" is being kitted out much like a 16 gig iPhone - for basic users, grandmas and housewives.
Gamers, power users and "enthusiast" computing people need not apply.

-The 27" 5k model - for hobbyists/gamers/enthusiast computing people. Faster drives, larger memory capacity, etc.

-It's more expensive, more expandable, has better resolution, better video card - more options and those who were expecting 5k resolution in the 21" with 64 gigs of replaceable ram with SSDs stock were dreaming.

This is very consistent with past marketing behavior on the part of Apple.

As an aside, I still have two Amiga 1000s in storage, one still in the original box. A fun machine. I expanded it to a whole three megabytes of ram with a 10 megabyte hard drive! Wow.
