You're right, it was a rumored phone. Still, the Z3 Compact had a 2600mAh batter and the Z5 Compact is 2700. Dimensions aren't much different, the S6 is actually thinner. Again, my whole point here is that in a phone relatively the same size as the 6s, can have a much larger battery than what the 6s has.

6s: 138.3 x 67.1 x 7.1 mm
z5 Compact: 127 x 65 x 8.9 mm
S6: 143.4 x 70.5 x 6.8 mm
M9: 144.6 x 69.7 x 9.6 mm

M9 is much bigger in any aspect.

The Z5 Compact is a very good phone, but still far from being "double the iPhone 6 battery in the same size" (when you speak about batteries, the thickness is a factor).

Galaxy S6 ? As far as i know it doesn't have better battery life than an iPhone

I'm talking purely about capacity, not optimization. I'm saying it's possible for apple to use larger size batteries as others are in similar sized phones.

I'm thinking the Retina MacBook was a clue as to what to expect. Everytime any discussion turns to battery in an iPhone, the battery is discussed as takinging up a defined space. And although this will make iFixits collective head to explode, I can see Apple optimizing the internal hardware to allow for a custom molded battery that essentially fills in every nook and cranny, and deficit remaining inside the phone. It won't be as easily or cheaply replaceable, but Apple's been steadily moving toward that eventuality with all of its products.

Ugh.

Make the stinking thing thicker and heavier and pack it with a kick ass camera, great dac/amp, and enough power to make it sing.

Just because it has a small screen doesn't mean people don't want to do stuff on it. Geez.

After going to a big screen phone, I hate it most of the time. I yearn for the power of the 6S+ and the camera and great music playback, but in a smaller form factor. It doesn't have to be paper thin. Freaking do something different again apple.

Please apple, two 4" iPhones.

iPhone 5e - for the more budget oriented customers
iPhone 6S Mini, for those who want the best, in regards to features & performance, but in a smaller size.
Even though I'am a fan of the Plus size device, apple really needs to offer a 4 inch option. About 30% of my friends refused to upgrade from their 5s because they have tiny hands. another 10%-15% of my friends upgraded to the 6/6s but never got used to the larger size and went back to their 5s. Apple needs to offer all three sizes and not leave out or skip features that are on the larger sizes that way most of apple's consumer base will be happy.plus they will make more revenue. Knowing apple though they will most likely leave out some key features to upsell the iPhone 7/7 plus. :(
On top of that they really need more black faced options. don't get me wrong I love my Rose Gold 6s plus but the white can be a little distracting when I'm trying to watch something on my phone. Space Gray is just to dull of a color for me. You know what apple needs more choices which they don't have.

Chinese website cnBeta [Google Translate] is the latest source to claim Apple will release a new 4-inch iPhone early this year. The blog, citing Foxconn sources, shared many new details about the so-called "iPhone 5e" that we have broken down for comparison against previous 4-inch iPhone rumors below.

iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c, both released in 2013

"iPhone 5e" vs. "iPhone 6c"
Apple's next-generation 4-inch iPhone has been given several names, including "iPhone 6c," "iPhone 7c" and "iPhone 5s Mark II," but this is the first report where it has been called "iPhone 5e."

The website claims "iPhone 5e" will represent an "enhanced" iPhone 5s and replace the latter in Apple's smartphone lineup once released. iPhone 5e would be Apple's new entry-level handset.

A8 Chip with 1GB of RAM
The report says the "iPhone 5e" will be powered by Apple's 64-bit A8 chip and 1GB of RAM. Apple devices with an A8 chip: iPhone 6, 6 Plus, iPad mini 4, Apple TV 4, iPad Air 2 and the newest iPod touch.

Japanese website Mac Otakara also said the new 4-inch iPhone will have an A8 chip, without disclosing potential RAM, while Chinese website MyDrivers said the device will have an A9 processor and 2GB of RAM.

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also said the 4-inch iPhone will have an A9 chip in a research note to investors, but that appears to be more of a prediction rather than supply chain evidence.

16GB/64GB Storage
The report claims the "iPhone 5e" will have 16GB base storage, with a 64GB model also available. Chinese website MyDrivers also said the new 4-inch iPhone will have 16GB base storage.

iPhone 5s Camera
"iPhone 5e" will have the same rear-facing 8-megapixel iSight camera as the iPhone 5s, according to the report. If the "iPhone 5e" proves to be an "enhanced" iPhone 5s, then this makes sense.

No other reputable iSight camera rumors have surfaced about the new 4-inch iPhone, but Mac Otakara said the device will have an improved FaceTime HD camera with ?/2.2 aperture.

Slightly Thinner and Lighter
The report claims the "iPhone 5e" will be lighter, implying that it will likely also be thinner. Mac Otakara previously reported the new 4-inch iPhone will resemble a sixth-generation iPod touch.

Mac Otakara now says the new 4-inch iPhone will have dimensions of 122.90 mm x 57.63 mm, which is fractionally thinner than the iPhone 5s. Apple could use 2.5D cover glass like the iPhone 6s.

Apple Pay
Apple will reportedly add NFC and Touch ID to the "iPhone 5e" to support Apple Pay, which is not available on the iPhone 5s unless paired with an Apple Watch.

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has also claimed the new 4-inch iPhone will feature Apple Pay to complete Apple's lineup of NFC-enabled devices.

VoLTE Calling
The report claims the "iPhone 5e" will support VoLTE calling, allowing for wideband, high-quality phone calls on select carriers in the U.S. and nine other countries.

Rose Gold and Colors
The report corroborates previous rumors claiming the new 4-inch iPhone will be available in Rose Gold and other existing iPhone colors.

Multiple reports claim the device will have an anodized aluminum finish like the iPhone 5s, rather than plastic casing like the budget iPhone 5c.

Pricing and Availability
The report claims the "iPhone 5e" will launch in February-March, possibly around the Chinese New Year, lining up with multiple other reports claiming the new 4-inch iPhone will launch in early 2016.

Pricing could start at around 3,288 yuan ($500 U.S.).cnBeta accurately reported on the iPhone 6s Plus's packaging and smaller battery, but also incorrectly claimed the A8 chip would top 2 GHz a few years ago.

[doublepost=1453131222][/doublepost]Or maybe it is possible that 5e and 6C are indeed two different devices, 5e may be a low price enhanced version of 5s and 6C may be a mini version of 6s.

More RAM doesn't decrease battery life. It actually increases battery life. For example, when multiple tabs are open in Safari, Safari will have to refresh pages far less. Also, during certain other tasks, the CPU and flash storage can be utilized less if there is more RAM, thus using less electricity, thus increasing battery life.

You may be right. The larger point though is that you can't get the full iPhone 6s/6s+ feature set into a smaller form factor with comparable battery life. They could make it thicker, but Apple won't do it.

Well considering that as of August of 2015 there were over 55% of the iPhones in use with 4" screens or smaller, I'd say there's a market for both.

The new 4" phone has been rumored to have an increased battery capacity. While I agree that it would be hard to squeeze all the new features of the 6S into a 4" phone, I'd say the 3D Touch and taptic engine are about the only things that wouldn't fit, and I think this rumor provides some reason to believe they will remove the 3.5mm jack on this one as well.

Apple always needs way too long to jump onto the train. This whole "small = cheaper" thinking makes me think of how car companies were thinking in the 70s. Back then, small was indeed cheap.

But today, you can have all the options you want like leather seats, powerful engine, automatic gearbox, climate control and all the other little useless gadgets on a BMW 1 series, VW Golf, Mini or MB A-Class.
