New A9-Based 4-Inch iPhone to Replace iPhone 5s, iPhone 6 and 6 Plus

Sad but completely true.

Smartphones are not a monopoly. The "masses" are not forced in any ways to buy brand A vs the other brands, so every buying decision follows the rules of economics; if Apple customers have low elesticity to price, then good for Apple, it only means they've built a sticky ecosystem and provide great service.

And no, iOS is not a "monopoly".

Apple's next-generation 4-inch iPhone is more likely to include variants of the A9 and M9 motion coprocessor chips, allowing for always-on Hey Siri, according to 9to5Mac.

The report claims the so-called "iPhone 5se" will likely replace the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in Apple's fall 2016 smartphone lineup, while the iPhone 5s will then be discontinued.9to5Mac and other sources originally expected the new 4-inch iPhone to have an A8 chip with M8 motion coprocessor, but Chinese website MyDrivers last week said the device will have an A9 chip instead. Apple has allegedly tested multiple prototypes with both A8 and A9 chipsets, likely fueling the conflicting reports.

Today's report also claims the new 4-inch iPhone will have 16GB and 64GB storage models available, which again corroborates Chinese website MyDrivers. The device's other possible specs include a 1,624 mAh battery, 1GB of RAM, Bluetooth 4.2, Apple Pay, VoLTE and 802.11ac WiFi, but 3D Touch appears unlikely.

The next-generation 4-inch iPhone reportedly entered mass production last week, ahead of a rumored March event announcement, alongside the iPad Air 3 and Apple Watch updates including new bands and possibly other minor improvements. The smartphone is expected to ship in late March or early April.

Why would they put 1gb of RAM on an A9? Or why would they make more A8 with 1gb of RAM after they've started making it with two for the mini?

Sorry but why should 1 GB be better on a 4" device than on a 4.7" device? Screen size has nothing to do with it.

It's just that it's pretty nice to be able to open apps and Safari tabs without constant refreshing.

It kinda does.

People's main gripe with 1GB was Safari pages refreshing. Now - when you render a webpage it takes up a certain amount of RAM. If the resolution of the display is smaller then it will render it using less RAM.

So, again - What memory issues were people having with 1GB on 4" devices?

1GB RAM? Please don't do that again... otherwise Safari won't get snappier.

And what's the point of 16 GB storage. That's like 3-5 Apps and your phone is full.

People need to quit complaining about this. Sure I wish it was higher but I'm guessing over half the people with iPhone are like my parents who don't have more then 10 app on there phone. They don't put music or other media on it and still have 5+ GB free. If you want bigger get a 64 GB

Don't forget this is the entry iPhone, not a flagship. If you don't like it, then it's not for you. Stop whining.
That's no good argument.

First of all, the iPhone 7 and 6s will also probably start at 16 gb. Those are not entry level devices. Second, iPhones are expensive. The entry level device is almost $700 in pretty much every country outside the USA. So we're talking $700 devices with 16 GB.

However, the man issue is that a 16 GB iPhone is just cumbersome. It's full before you know it and then you can't really enjoy the phone because everything you do will make this pop-up appear saying you have to remove stuff. Take a video? Nope. Download some music for a holiday? Nope. How about playing a game that takes up a few hundred MB? Nope.

All the cool stuff requires space and you don't have space, therefore you can't do cool stuff. You can look it whatever way you want, but it just sucks to have an iPhone that can't be used properly.

That's nonsense because Safari doesn't just save whatever is visible, it saves the whole page that is loaded, also the part that is not visible.

Its a greedy money making machine that the masses haven't figured out they don't care about the consumer. Hypocrites running the company now playing the masses for fools. Good for them for getting away with it for so long, but all bubbles burst when they get too high.

There's no hypocrisy. Companies exist to make money. They're not your friends, and they never claim to be. They do what makes sense to them as a company. We do what makes sense to us as customers.

Besides it sounds like this phone won't have everything the 6S has so I don't see why they have to skimp on the ram to further segment it.
Segmenting in the RAM department is easy to do, you put in less. Segmenting in screen quality, or touch id sensor quality etc. is harder to do (from a production perspective), because you will have to keep producing a different (lesser) component.

Um, I don't think this will be the reason iPhone 6 and 6 plus will be discontinued in the fall. iPhone 7 will be that reason.
I understand your logic but in this case I agree that the iPhone 5se will replace the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus in that way they can make the 6s and 6s plus $99 and $199 on contract. It's just apple getting greedy but oh well! In this way the iphone 5se will be sold at $99 on two year contract as well along with the upcoming flagship iPhone 7 and 7 Plus.

But it's Apple that chooses to allow these devices to get multiple OS upgrades. Those upgrades don't work nearly as well on devices with only 1GB RAM. Besides it sounds like this phone won't have everything the 6S has so I don't see why they have to skimp on the ram to further segment it.

First: do you know for certain this phone will have 1GB RAM? No.
Second: how a new device could be called "iPhone 5se"? These rumors are a smoking pile of crap so far.
Too much stock price manipulation in these so called "industry rumors" it's not even remotely funny anymore (if predictable).

The problem is most of the people wanting a 4" phone are wanting a new 4" flagship. The people who wanted one because it is cheap were already happy with the 5S. I know I personally would be willing to pay more for a 4" phone with flagship specs, as it is I'm not sure if I'll get this one or not.

I can't remember who said it (I could look it up but it's more fun to paraphrase): History doesn't repeat itself, but it does rhyme a lot. I can't help thinking that Apple in the 80s/early 90s had lots of products, lots of models, trying different things, trying to be everything to everyone, and nearly tanked. The "se" moniker just seems too eerily familiar. There's no more Steve to swoop in and wheel-and-deal it back into profitability, I just hope they don't grow too many tentacles that will suck their billions (trillions?) away. Their model of wow-ing the world with things they didn't know they needed has worked for the most part, but everyone knows they need a phone now. So unless they come up with some Star-Wars-y hologram, to Star Trek-y holodeck, or get the watch to be all you need ... dunno. It's Monday so I'm pessimistic, but it just seems like we've been here before, but reading about it in Byte and Compute! rather than minute by minute blogs.

Nice, this is what I predicted would happen! Glad Apple is going to simplify the iPhone line.

I don't see anywhere in the 9to5Mac story where it mentions RAM. Am I missing something?

I worked for them for years. I trust nothing from their mouths. You're correct to say they are there to make money and consumers are under no obligation to buy. But I have seen way too much to know better about them.

Currently I have a 4.7" iPhone and an iPad. Sometimes I think going back to a 4" iPhone would be really nice, and then just use my iPad whenever I want more screen. Other times I think going up to a 5.5" iPhone would be really nice, and I would ditch the iPad entirely. The latter seems to be winning in my mind at the moment.

Don't forget this is the entry iPhone, not a flagship. If you don't like it, then it's not for you. Stop whining.

I think his point is valid. It will probably cost in the region of what the 5s does, so for the premium that Apple will charge, you don't expect crappy specs.

Fair enough but that still doesn't answer my question. I don't recall people having refreshing problems on 1GB 4" devices. The first I heard of it was iPhone 6.

I kind of like the idea of it just being called the iPhone mini. It doesn't need a number because the people who buy these phones aren't looking for the latest and greatest anyway. Whenever they update the small phone, they'll just do it quietly with the next generation.

Where do you get that from? There are plenty of people looking for the latest and greatest with a reasonable screen size.
