I was using iChat up until a few days ago when I took MR members' advice and tried Adium. It's GREAT. Much better than AIM for Mac or iChat. I highly suggest trying it out.

Yeah...there is a multi-system chat program for Windows (Trillian) but AFAIK nothing like that for OS X. I yearn for the day, my friend. Yearn for the day.
You're a macrumors 601 and you post that?!?!?! You do realise that Fire was out on the Mac before Trillian came out for the PC? I think it was back in the Public Beta days, but it might've been 10.0... either way at that time the only other multi-system chat program was a program called "Everybuddy" for Linux.

I just switched, and i sort of miss Triton

why why whyyyyyyyyy

Triton could possibly be, the worst, ugliest, slowest, least user-friendly, most annoying, obtrusive software ever released to the public in the history of the world.

I'm sorry, I really wasn't clear at all about that. :(

The stream of posts to which I was replying were talking about multi-client AV chatting -- which Trillian (which isn't based on GAIM, AFAIK) can do and which none of the GAIM-based clients, including Fire, can do yet, AFAIK.

That is correct, isn't it? I'm sorry I did not say it at all clearly the first time I tried.

Ah OK, nevermind my post then. You are correct.

Adium is great for chat-only.

If I need to do file transfers or audio/video, I use iChat. Check out the great shareware Chax, to add some nice features to iChat (like tabbed IM windows).

Keep in mind that if you want to video chat with a Windows AIM buddy, they have to use AIM 5.9, as Triton is incompatible with iChat video.

On Adium, file transfer works fine for me, just not direct connect, so I can still send and receive photos and everything just fine, just not through direct connect. The GAIM library says they are working on improving that for Version 2.0, so hopefully when it gets fixed, Adium can incorporate that into their version.

Also for those discussing video chat with Adium, it's on the way hopefully, Google's Summer of Code for Adium, one of the projects is to implement voice/video chat.

Oh really? This is great news! :) Thanks for pointing it out.

Is it just me, or is there no way to edit your own profile in Adium?
Preferences - Accounts - Edit (lower right corner) - Personal - Profile

I can't believe how many AIM threads I see on this forum. This thread should be a sticky or something, or people should search a bit more.

Hi everybody. I'm having some problems when videoconferencing with my girlfriend. To put it simple, we can't.

I have a brand new MacBook and she uses a PC laptop with Windows XP. She frequently videochats with her mother on Yahoo Messenger, but with me it doesn't work.

We've tried:
iChat (with an AIM account) to AIM
Yahoo Messenger to Yahoo Messenger
Skype and MSN Messenger for mac don't do video yet.

What can we do? Any ideas?

Thanks

Juan

I think Microsoft OS products fit the bill there

She'll need all the firewalls off. as will you. You might need to plug directly into your modem and bypass the router.

And being an enthousiastic Mac OS X rookie, how can I switch the firewall off?

I'm connected via a WiFi router, but I can also connect my MacBook to it with a LAN cable (no WiFi). Is this what you mean by "bypassing the router"?

Thank you for your help. This issue is driving her crazy in a bad way...

Juan

I just got used to it, if you know what I mean. I didn't think it was "ugly", but it wasn't the best.

Okay...since it works for her and not for you, the most likely culprit is your firewall. What is your network configuration?

If nothing else, try this very briefly:

- Put your Macbook in the DMZ of the router
- Turn off the OS X firewall completely.
- Try again

But I'd recommend against leaving your computer in that setting indefinitely... if it works, you should either set up port forwarding or stay in the router DMZ, but you should turn the OS X firewall back on and just open ports relevant to IM....

dont wait for AIM Triton, it's so buggy and horrible even the AIM.com site has the older version of AIM on their front page. I couldnt even sign on with that thing

I just tried adium.
I had it on for 5 minutes and it crashed THREE times.

I've removed the program now. Worthless to me anyways due to the lack of a/v chat.

Thats definitely not normal and I highly doubt it was the programs fault. Adium has NEVER crashed for me in 2-3 years of use.

i love adium...

but...

the away messages don't work correctly for me. whenever i go away, it sends me straight to mobile status. also, the direct connect doesn't work properly for me either.

sooo... if i want to use away messages or direct connect, i must go back to old school AIM...

i too love adium. I couldn't care less about the lack of A/V, but the inability to send and receive files does annoy me. Actually, I can send files to buddies using AIM on windows, but I can't send or receive with other adium users. Oh well... it's still the best option out there.

No offense but the downside of all AIM programs EXCEPT AOL AIM is.. they don't have ability to change your password which sucks. If I needed to change my password, I have to redownload AIM and then login and change the password which is pain in the butt. If you have a better solution, please let me know :) Thanks!

iChat rocks!

Oh, the other downside is I tried to use Adium "bonjour" to work with all iChat bonjours at work but it don't seem to be workin' right. Any suggestions? Thanks again!
