No offense but the downside of all AIM programs EXCEPT AOL AIM is.. they don't have ability to change your password which sucks. If I needed to change my password, I have to redownload AIM and then login and change the password which is pain in the butt.
How often do you change your password, really? I haven't changed mine once since I created my screen name about 8 years ago. I've created other usernames since then, but they were all created at the AOL Instant Messenger website.

Besides, I think you can use this tool to change your password without having AIM installed.

i too love adium. I couldn't care less about the lack of A/V, but the inability to send and receive files does annoy me. Actually, I can send files to buddies using AIM on windows, but I can't send or receive with other adium users. Oh well... it's still the best option out there.

I don't understand this. I can send and recieve files to others using Adium. No problems. Send to my daughter with an iBook using Adium; send to my son with a PC and he's using????? Hmmmm, not sure, AIM for Windows that looks absolutely awful. And send and recieve to my wife's iBook and she uses iChat. Adium works well for me. Sorry that you're having problems. Cheers

I have issues with it as well. I can generally send files fine, but when it comes to receiving from people on other clients, it usually fails (sometimes works, but it's rare). Everyone I talk to on AIM (that I know of) uses AIM or Gaim on Windows or iChat on the Mac.
It's a known bug with Adium, which I wish they'd get fixed. The real annoyance for me is the inability to use the direct connect feature.

It's not worth hoping for a new version of AIM for Mac anytime soon. I'm a very satisfied Adium user. The lack of webcam support and direct connecting is more than made up for by everything else on it. Sending/receiving files still works just fine. I really can't find any reason to use AIM if iChat and Adium are available.

how to voice chat with Windows AIM members

I have discovered a magical combination that finally allowed me to chat with my aim buddies via voice. Only one catch.... The Mac user needs to be running iChat and the Windows user must be using Trillian. They can then proceed to comminucate with each other via voice over the AIM network. I discovered this completely by accident when I was messing around with iChat and discovered that I couldnt voice chat with my AIM buddies. Then an old friend logged on using trillian and low and behold the voice chat button lit up like a star!! I hit the voice button and everything synced up perfectly and we both spent a couple of hours chatting away. I hope this helps somebody.

With iChat, and Adium, you don't get animated buddy icons, it's difficult to edit your info, its hard to look at others info, you can't set your status to invisible, sending files almost never work, and etc.

I like Adium, and iChat, but those things need to be...implimented

various questions

I've been using AIM on my mac since I got it. It crashes on me fairly often when I scroll my Mighty Mouse a certain way, so I finally broke down and downloaded Adium. It has just been on my computer for five minutes and I'm trying to decide if I should make the permanant switch.

With the AIM program, how can I delete my "Recent Buddies?"

With Adium, can I add links and change my font when setting up my AOL profile?

I went on the AIM tech support live chat the other day to ask about a new version that had parity of features with the windows version. The guy was really really stupid and kept saying that a new Triton version was at the standard www.aim.com website for Mac. It wasn't, and I asked for the direct link, and the guy basically 'hung up' on me and my tech call.

I emailed Yahoo about this too, and they basically just sent me a form letter back.

I haven't bothered to read previous replies but I hope some of the other memebers have dissuaded you from even bothering with the AIM app and encouraged you to use something like Adium or Proteus.

iChat works fine for me though :)

quick question...i installed aim before reading about this and, yes, it's buggy. question is...do i just drag the file in "applications" to the trash and it's uninstalled? Thats what i did so i'm hoping i did this right...i want to make sure i'm not leaving anything behind....
**edit** i just spent 1/2 hour deleting all these files that were left behind w/ finder. how on earth do you FULLY delete / uninstall a program?? If someone could PM me on that i'd really appreciate it.

The new AIM development kits have been released for Mac OS X so there is hope that things will improve. You can now roll your own AIM compatible application, create plug-ins, and broadcast your available elsewhere.

...and is video chat supported???

I remember hearing AIM went open source, or open something.. anyone know what I'm talking about that would care to elaborate?

If this is still accurate...

http://missig.org/julian/blog/2006/03/06/aol-hates-open-source/

I think I missed it. :( But it also appears pretty limited. According to that blog, the terms do not permit the code to be used to develop a multi-client chat program like Adium....

Here's the info regarding AIM being opened up for the Mac (rather, just an announcement. The link above describes it well). Basically, AOL is releasing the SDK for Windows, Mac and Linux so developers can build on it, but on a limited basis. Should be interesting to see what comes about.

I'm hoping maybe the developers of Adium can use it to somehow get file transfer and direct connect working properly, but somehow I highly doubt it since that would be outside the limits of what AOL is allowing people do to.

No.

Q: Does AIMCC on Mac support audio/video?
A: We plan to support audio/video in a future version of AccOc.

iChat did support animated buddy icons but it took so much CPU that I'd end up closing the Window. File transfer is smooth. You can't use invisible status unless there is an iChat add-on to help you with that--chax is it?

Adium receives animated buddy icons fine. AnimatingBuddyIcons

If by 'info' you're talking about your Profile, this will be much easier in Adium 1.0 because you can set and change a profile for all of your accounts via the new Personal preferences pane.

You can set your status to invisible. AccountStatusManagement.

Sending files will also be fixed (for those cases in which it does not currently work, which mostly involve un-port-forwarded NATs and firewalls) in 1.0.
