What blows my mind with the AirPods Max is that if you want to use them plugged in you have to buy a Lightning to 3.5mm audio jack cable and then use use the lightning to 3.5mm adapter dongle to listen to almost-lossless audio. (And for whatever reason a Lightning to USB-C cable doesn't work to plug it into an iPad, Mac, or iPhone 15).

Hopefully the next generation Max takes a cue from the Beats Studio Pro by supporting proper lossless over USB-C.
Yeah I hate lightning for its dumb restrictions. I can’t use a USB-C to lightning cable to do anything other than charge basically because it won’t even let me run my USB-C SSD at 480mbps USB speeds. Can’t plug in basic accessories if Apple doesn’t want them to work. Ah well

But the Apple Watch is an iPhone accessory and it doesn't charge with Lightning.

The AirPods Max come with a charging cable anyway, so it would've been no big deal to just include a USB C cable.
Because on the Apple Watch it’s a big deal (to not make it look like a gadget, waterproofing, lack of space…).

On the APM, as you said, it’s not a big deal. But probably USB-C would have left more bothered than pleased customers.

I like my APM but a major disappointment was that I had to keep my Bose QC35s around also, instead of just replacing them. Why? APM doesn't have sidetone. Inferior for work calls with noise cancelling on, I find it very distracting that everyone sounds clear but I, to myself, can only hear my head voice (since the APM earcups are blocking the ears). Sure I can turn on transparency, but then that lets in any distracting sounds from the environment too. Pretty shameful to me for such an expensive offering from the maker of iPhone.

My other contrarian view is: I like the case! Here's my rationale: if you want the bulk of a truly protective case, there are third party options. No one but Apple would have made this origami case. I agree it's not that protective, but for my uses, it's protective enough and I appreciate the lower bulk.

I use my APM daily with my work laptop. a Dell something or another with the latest Windows OS.

I used to hardwire, but prefer Bluetooth now. my only issue on calls is that customers sometimes say they can hear someone next to me. meanwhile the person is like 10+ feet away and not speaking loud.

I can’t tell why that is.

I was scratching my head why they didn't make the original AirPods Max USB-C.
Made no sense to me at the time.
Now they are calling that a feature???
To be honest I can count on no hands the number of times I’ve even thought about the charging port on the Maxs. If pressed, I couldn’t actually say with certainty what port it was.

Replaceable batteries, maybe? Or does the necessary technology not exist yet so the company touting carbon neutrality and renewable energy could make its AirPods more sustainable?

APM2 needs to be...

$50 cheaper at least.

Keep the sound quality and controls.

Throw out the heavy, bulky physical design. Bose beat apple to this years ago.

Offer a real carrying case with useful accessories (again even Bose knows how to do this).

And of course, USB-C (Bose strikes again!).

I hate Bose (no highs, no lows...) but they really nailed the design of the 700.

My take is that because AirPods Max are aimed at iPhone users, so long as the iPhone charged via lightning, it made more sense for an accompanying accessory to charge via the same cable as well.

Now that iPhones sport usb c, AirPods can make the transition over as well, even though users of the 14 and earlier would still be on lightning.

Apple plans to begin a major overhaul of its AirPods lineup starting next year, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

The standard AirPods and the AirPods Max will see a refresh in 2024, while the AirPods Pro will be updated in 2025. For the AirPods and AirPods Pro, Apple will update the design of the earbuds and the case, while also improving audio quality.

When the AirPods are refreshed, Apple will phase out the second-generation and third-generation models, offering two fourth-generation models at different price points instead.

Both of the fourth-generation AirPods models will look like a cross between the current AirPods and the AirPods Pro, with Apple introducing shorter stems. The higher-end version of the standard AirPods will feature Active Noise Cancellation, a feature that has thus far been limited to the AirPods Pro and the AirPods Max.

Fit will be "improved," but it is unclear if Apple plans to add silicone ear tips. As for the case, it will gain speakers for Find My alerts, similar to the current AirPods Pro, and a USB-C charging port.

The AirPods Max will see the inclusion of a USB-C port for charging purposes instead of a Lightning port, and Apple will also debut new colors. No other notable features are expected at this time.

In 2025, the AirPods Pro will be updated with a new design and a faster chip, plus the earbuds could get some previously-rumored hearing health features. Rumors have suggested Apple is working on functionality that would let the AirPods Pro collect hearing data and better serve as a hearing aid replacement.

There is no clear word yet on when in 2024 and 2025 we might see AirPod refreshes, but Apple typically introduces new models in the latter half of the year around when new iPhones come out. Gurman says that the AirPods will come out "later next year" and the AirPods Max will come out "around the end of next year."

This is the one product I buy every time it comes out. AirPod Pro have been stellar for me.

What’s the benefit of AirPods Max over Sony or Sennheiser or Bose wireless cans?
Everyone will have a different answer. I tried every headphone Best Buy carried and I found the sound profile and ANC was just superior. Not too much bass. Not too much treble. Great all around for podcasts and music.

Unless the fourth gens fit like the second and first gen AirPods, count me out. The third gens kept falling out of my ears so I had to skip them.
I couldn’t wear them either. Which sucked because the 1s were my favorites. I now find the Pro 2s the best headphones I’ve ever worn.

I’ve never quite understood who the AirPods Max were for. It’s like they’re too expensive for most and not good enough sound quality wise for audiophiles. I’m curious how many they’ve actually sold.
Go take a walk around Manhattan on any given day. They're everywhere.

I love my AirPods Pro 2, but I really wish that they were not white.

I hate them because Apple hates my ears. Can’t get a consistent, lasting seal no matter what I do, whether I use Apple’s ear tips or someone else’s.

Eagerly waiting for the magic in the APP 2 (3?) to transition to the next generation of Beats Fit Pro.

Why are they separating the standard Airpods? I hope we don't have the tips and they are like the regular airpods. I'm glad they are updating it, but what is this, Generation 4 A and Generation 4 B? Keep the original airpods together and update it all accordingly. The reason I don't have the pros is because of the whole tip issue. The Standard Airpods fit and they need an update.

Which will bring a 30% reduction in noise cancellation on the current model and a price increase, in the EU AirPods Max could reach 1000 euros.
