Apple to launch Newton later this year.

What's also funny? I actually had a Newton (it was given to me). I had one of the first PDA "apps" the provided restaurant location mapping of San Francisco. It was awesome, a card the bigger than a MasterCard, slide it in, restaurants a plenty. First restaurant I went to had gone out of business 3 months prior -- but it was cool it's own mid 90s technology way.

Apple to launch new _______ later this year. (Copy/paste then fill in the blank).
Why? Leaving it blank accurately describes new product release policy.

And being serious, this is a complaint I’ve had with Apple for a long time. Most technology companies will give you at least a range of time and what type of products you can expect. A lot of Apple’s customer base are people that make some or all of their living using Apple products. And Apple has a number of current products that either haven’t been updated in some time or are probably going to have an important upgrade with their next release. You don’t have to say “here are the products and these are the major features’ but someone looking to replace a laptop or desktop with an equivalent but newer version of that device could make a better decision of whether to buy something now to hold themselves over or live with what they have because the new models are due within ’X’ time.

And you don’t have to give out details…don’t say what the screen size is or base memory just that a viable replacement for your 16 inch MacBook Pro is due out in October or November or whenever you expect to release it.

Who would buy the current one, though, knowing that – except people who desperately need one now?

Right now people know a new version will be out "soon". I am willing to bet that there already is a significant drop off in sales and that it will remain that way until they do release whatever replacement laptop/desktop they ultimately release. But a lot of people will limp along that MIGHT buy a current one if they A) need an upgrade for a 4 -6 year old computer and B) knew for certain that they had to wait until next year (as an example) before the new ones would be available.
