IM guessing because last paragraph: " Today's update also appears to enable the feature that allows for automatic switching between devices, which is available for AirPods and AirPods Pro. Automatic switching will connect the AirPods to any Apple device signed associated with your iCloud when you activate audio on that device and are actively using it. "
Fair enough, it’s a pretty major change that should be in the title though

This is one way Apple can get more beta users by releasing an update that requires iOS 14.:cool:
Hope people are smart enough to backup their iPhones with encryption on their computers before installing.:oops:

Maybe tomorrow they will announce this will work with the Apple TV 4K. Probably not. I was excited for this feature until I found out it's only for mobile devices. Now, not so excited.

With my experience, the beta seems to be more stable and it also seemed like Apple have some habitual way to mess up a public release.

Anyone on iOS 14 able to verify?

Whenever I toggle Spatial Audio on, it says "This content isn't supported by spatial audio"

Also auto switching doesn't seem to work - unless I misunderstand the concept. I play media on my phone when the AirPods are connected to my laptop and nothing changes.

Yeah.. that's my image in this article where it says "not supported"

But I think I can hear the audio moving when I move my head (hope it's not placebo lol)

So maybe iOS 14 just needs an update for the wording?

It also sound echo-y and not as good as non spatial imo

I thought spatial audio was supposed to simulate surround sound? Why would I want the sound to appear like it’s originating from the phone?

My understanding is that it does both. In the same way that you can use spatial/positional audio to appear it's originating from the source (like your example says), this allows the source to also 'virtually place' a 7.1 speaker system for your ears. And just as if you were sitting in your living room, the surround sound doesn't shift when you move your head.

We'll probably have to wait a bit for proper media that supports it, whatever that switch is that needs to be turned on. It's confirmed to be capable of 5.1, 7.1, and Dolby Atmos, so it's coming. What people are describing with turning their head to change where the sound is coming from is most likely in stereo and not surround.

If only I could force update...been on the charger over an hour still nothing.

That’s strange. Try this:

1) set your AirPods (Pro) to charge;
2) as they charge, open the lid so they appear in your Settings - General - Info; while there, just check the firmware version to be sure;
3) close the charging case and let them sit there, charging.

My AirPods 2 auto-updated after about 10 minutes sitting in the charger. However, when I plugged them in, both AirPods were already charged to 100% and the case had 93%. It might be that they all need to be charged well-enough to trigger the update?

I haven't downloaded any betas of iOS 14. I told myself I'd wait, and I almost made it to official release. But this just convinced me to install the beta on my iPad Pro!

Though not having a proper way to install the new firmware on the AirPod Pros, such a random process, is killing my geeking out high.

No, spatial audio is exactly what you're describing. It's so its as if the audio source is coming from the actual device.

I am watching a 5.1 concert video (Metallica S&M2) I purchased from the iTunes store, this is widely impressive. It sounds as is the audio if coming from everywhere around me.

Very impressed with this technology......exceeded my expectations. it is indeed simulating surround sound. What a feature!! It's been a while since I was impressed with anything like this.

The latest beta (8) is quite solid and the GM could be out tomorrow, so anyone really eager can go ahead. They pushed the new AirPods firmware out now so by the time iOS 14 is out for everyone, most people’s AirPods will have self-updated. Not tech-savvy people not running iOS 14 beta won’t probably even notice that something has changed with their AirPods. 😉
