"Got new AirPods! Much better sound quality in FaceTime and Siri. Faster switching between devices. Worth upgrading from first gen only if your battery is dying. - Vladislav Kuznetsov (@v1597psh) March 26, 2019"

Wait, how long is the lifespan of the battery inside AirPods? Do you have to buy a new pair every 1 or 2 years?
Well it depends how much you use them... batteries are batteries, it’s the limit of the chemistry in lithium ion batteries. Happens to everything one way or another.

I think they are worth it as they are so convenient, work with all my Apple stuff and better than any Bluetooth headphones (functionality) in the Past. They were so back ordered when they first time that I had to buy mine from eBay after 5 weeks of them being out and paid £215 so I’m paying less for them this time as I managed to get a pair direct from Apple.

Apple's new second-generation AirPods are beginning to arrive to customers around the world, and some early adopters have turned to the MacRumors forums and social media to share their first impressions of the earphones.

The new AirPods have the same outward design as the original and remain available in white only. Apple continues to include a one-meter Lightning to USB-A cable in the box with all second-generation AirPods.

Hey Siri

Powered by a new H1 chip, the new AirPods support hands-free Siri, enabling users to change songs, make phone calls, adjust the volume, get directions, and more by saying "Hey Siri." Siri can still be activated by doubling tapping one of the AirPods if enabled in Settings > Bluetooth on an iOS device.

First impressions about the new Hey Siri functionality are mostly positive so far. MacRumors forum member Moxxham from Australia wrote that "Hey Siri seems to work really well," even with loud music playing in the background, while Reddit user Lachlanhunt found the feature "works reasonably well."

Sound Quality

First impressions about overall audio quality are both subjective and anecdotal, with conflicting opinions as to whether the new AirPods sound better than the original. Reports range from users not noticing any difference all the way to feeling like the new AirPods are a huge improvement for sound.

MacRumors forum member Kiky disagrees with the above tweet:At the very least, MacRumors reader Vladislav Kuznetsov and many others agree that features like Siri and FaceTime calls sound clearer:

On a related note, Apple recently seeded a 6.3.2 firmware update for the first-generation AirPods, and some users on MacRumors and Reddit are speculating that the update has led to improved audio quality and faster connection speeds on the first-generation AirPods. Evidence is anecdotal at this point.

Early adopters are also noticing that the new AirPods switch more quickly between devices like the iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and Mac they are connected. Apple says the H1 chip makes switching between sources up to two times faster.

As far as battery life is concerned, more time will be needed for a proper comparison between the new AirPods and the original pair.

Apple says the new AirPods get up to three hours of talk time per charge, compared to up to two hours with the previous generation. Other battery life stats remain the same, with up to five hours of listening time per charge and more than 24 hours of total battery life from extra charges stored in the case.

The new AirPods are available to order on Apple.com and in the Apple Store app with a wired charging case for $159, the same price as the original AirPods, and with a wireless charging case for $199. Apple says both options will be available at Apple Stores and select resellers starting this week.

MacRumors will be sharing our own second-generation AirPods hands-on video and impressions soon. Let us know your own first impressions in the comments section or by tweeting at us with a @MacRumors mention!

Anyone getting a strange click with the case compared to the first gen. seems a little flimsy???

While I haven’t tried the new AirPods yet, I’m willing to bet all these people saying the sound is better just haven’t cleaned their gen 1s properly lol.
I fear this may be the case. This prompted me to clean my AirPods which I hadn't done in a while, and whilst it wasn't immediately obvious at first, once I got in there with a plastic fork the amount of gunk that came off was staggering. Ew.

Thanks for the prompt to be more cleanly!

EDIT: I trust Apple's claims of higher quality sound as well as reviews of actual users of both.

To all of you guys saying it’s just the ear wax buildup, I want you to remember this moment in terms of MBP keyboards when people said it was just dust buildup, or iPhone 4 connectivity problems being blamed on cases, or EarPods not fitting in ears (I’ve seen quite a few people put them in wrong to validate their case), or many Battery complaints after updates.

Let’s wait for the professionals to judge and scientific evidence to prove this.
Wait till rtings review them.

I remember Airpods sound much better than the earpods, much more bass, etc! Turns out they are virtually the same:

Never understood why people liked these overpriced toothbrushes. You can get a great pair of bluetooth over ear headphones for like 80$
Wait, you seriously cannot understand why someone would rather have in ear buds than over ear headphones? Can't even think of one reason?

wonder if any retailers will offer a trade-in discount. "save 10% when you recycle your airpods with us" or something similar.
That’d be a terrible deal. I just sold my AirPods on FB marketplace for $100. I had it posted for 20 minutes and got like 15 replies. Super high demand.

Its for those that dont want over the ear headphones, to big to have in pockets, i always have my airpods in my jeans pocket. And think its the best purschase i ever made from apple..

serious:
is the airPod fitment any different from their standard issue wired devices?

question about the auto connect feature. i'm currently using gen 1 airpods, i noticed after my workout when i placed the pods inside the charging case, my iphone would still be connected with it, hence draining battery even when i'm not using them. any tips? is this normal?

Technically the new AirPods should have distinctly better Siri/call quality. They use Bluetooth 5 with better audio codecs. The older version (as with most similar bluetooth devices) significantly degrade sound quality when a mic is activated.

Could anyone with a Mac and the new AirPods check which codecs are used?

- Start listening to music or video
- Hold Option key and click on Bluetooth menu bar icon

- Start a new audio recording in QuickTime (or call using FaceTime)
- Hold Option key and click on Bluetooth menu bar icon again

The same...AAC and SCO.

Or are trying so self justify spending ANOTHER $200 on the Rue 21 of earphones.

If you just want quality Bluetooth headphone options, for roughly the same cost:

https://en-us.sennheiser.com/earbuds-in-ear-headphones

Personally, I use Sennheiser wired over-the-ear headphones, no longer an option with Apple iOS devices.

Have you seen the size of the Momentum True earbuds' (only true wireless earbud) case? It's huge, and not pocketable unless you wear baggy clothes or want a huge bulge in your pocket.

I am honestly surprised somebody would pay $100 for used GEN one AirPods. (Unless you had AppleCare included and under warranty), clearly that eBay buyer didn’t research the market before purchasing, because you can find used AirPods for approximately $75 in excellent condition without AppleCare.
Hmmm... I sold them basically two times for that amount. Once the buyer was just not reliable so I posted the
again on Facebook and in less then 5 Minutes I sold them for 100 CHF (that's around 100$) while you can buy them new from Apple for 179.- or from other big retailers for 159.-! And these were over 2 years old with no warranty! Yes people are stupid and just want Airpods no matter what...

I got mine, opposingly, I believe they sound the exact same as the first gen I love. Prob still keep em but yeah.

I keep getting distortion and interference on mine with 12.3 anyone else having issues?

They do sound clearer to me but I think that’s probably because my old ones had some wax in them that I couldn’t get to to clean out. Or maybe it’s a placebo effect.
[doublepost=1553778222][/doublepost]
Just got mine and they definitely sound better to me. Clearer, a little more bass it seems, definitely louder overall. I am happy with them.
Yep. That’s what I think too. Just got mine delivered this morning.

A colleague received his gen2 pods yesterday. We did some testing with my gen1, switching with the same song playing, mixing them between ears etc.

I’d say the gen2 sounds a tiny bit more detailed with high sounds. Other than that, hardly noticeable difference, definitely the sound quality is not alone worth it if you have gen1’s. Btw my gen1’s are 2 years old, I got the delivery in early Jan 2017.

I hope my batteries last until the next generation comes out.

I much prefer the sound quality of AirPods Gen 1 for podcasts/speech. Gen 1 has more treble, which makes the speech clearer. I have moderate high frequency hearing loss, so my opinion may not apply to you.
