I noticed it too, and I like it. I have a bad habit of nicking caps lock when I go for the a key, so I like the fact that it's not very sensitive.

I still hate this "feature". It has annoyed me 1,000% more than it has saved me accidently hitting caps. Sure, there have been instances where I've accidently hit the caps, and it's "saved" me, but no more than I've accidently hit any other keys. It is getting increasingly frustrating going back to delete a word because it wasn't put in caps, like it was supposed to.

It's wholly inconvenient, and completely useless in my case. The cons greatly outweigh the pros in my usage.

I WANT that slow-push CAPS LOCK!

Just bought my laptop Aug 25 and my keyboard lets me lock up the caps key with a brush of the fingertip. It drives me out of my mind!!! I look at the screen and suddenly see that I've been shouting for some time. I hate having to take the time to go back and re-type it all. Where can I get the "fix" that will require I hold down the CAPS LOCK key so the computer "knows" I fully intend to engage that key???

Hey guys.. Per the above, I would agree that speed is the issue, 100%, whether by fault or design.. however, I can press it 100+ times in a row, really fast, the the light never turns on.. however, I can press it 100+ times in a row a at slow to moderate pace, and it's all good.. so for a guy whom types all day long, I find this feature (if by design) both handy and annoying at the same time...

Thus it led me to call Apple (I live in Canada). Their engineers had no idea about the issue. I was passed between 4 different people before I was transfered to the correct one.. and they don't even use these keyboards at their office yet..

So they said they've made a note to engineering, and bascially couldn't say what would be done with the note/information..

However, they did agree that if enough people address the issue, by bringing it to their attention, the more likely they'll address it.

Apparently, I'm the first Canadian customer to bring this to their attention. So I pointed them the a google of the issue (this thead included), and they agreed 'it must be real'.. and that was all they could give me.

My question is: there's folks claiming they took their boards in for an exchange, and their new boards worked perfectly.. what do you think?

Did we get lemons, or are the folks with new perfectly working boards living in an alternate state of typing?

Cheers,

The Honk.

Just use shift... honestly, Caps Lock is pretty much a useless key.

I'm glad to report that mine is absolutely fine .. :)

It's great that Apple have at last made a great keyboard. I found the old ones similar to using a "Typewriter" ... perhaps a slight exaggeration ..

agreed on all counts. Love the new keyboard, and no problems with any of the keys. :)

I do use shift for typing regular sentences, but when typing a whole word in caps, it's not efficient.

Why don't you just go out an buy a new keyboard. I'm pretty sure you'd be "1,000%" more satisfied cause their CAPS KEY would work better making it OBVIOUSLY a superior product cause that's what makes keyboard great; a CAPS key. (used caps key several times and am "100% x 1000" satisfied".

That's absurd. The point is that this shouldn't be a feature, or should at least be able to be toggled off. I use caps lock regularly, too, and it just doesn't help. At all. Besides that, this keyboard rocks.Too bad I can't type on regular keyboards now. :(

Is it possible to buy a new keyboard for a laptop?

I'd rather consciously hold down CAPS LOCK because I know I want to type in all caps for a few words, sentences, paragraphs then accidentally press it and have to go back and clean it up.

that happened to me too on my imac:

Yup and this "feature" drives me nuts!

Just sent one Apple keyboard back and realised the replacement was the same. Tried a few in the Apple Store and realised that they're ALL the same.

Hate it!

LMAO I know just how you feel. I really thought my keyboard was broken.

Unreal, so much fuss over a capslock key.

Buddy, if you're used to touch typing, constantly having to go back and re-type things because the Caps Lock hasn't engaged is a pain in the backside.

So if it's not an issue for you, how about you go read a thread that is an issue for you rather than posting unnecessary comments here? Cheers.

Whoah, touchy!

Touch typing is working for me just fine on it, buddy. I think you need to learn new ways. :)

Okay, maybe I should have said FAST touch typing. If you're racing through your text, you have to make a conscious effort to press Caps Lock.

Now I'm trying to use shift rather than Caps Lock but come on... why the h3ll should I have to change the way I type just because the keyboard dictates it?

Me and other people on here obviously have been happily typing away for years using the Caps Lock and now we have to learn new ways??

You think that's okay just because it doesn't affect you?

agreed on all counts. Love the new keyboard, and no problems with any of the keys. :)

No offense, as it's not intended.. however, I don't know if I believe that.. if anything, I suspect your key hit rate (speed at which you hit the keys) is not quite that fast.. either that or the rest of us are on the ol' crack pipe.. :p

I can't fathom how some / so many would be manufactured differently.. doesn't make sense.. Apple accessories as such all get spit out of the same factory in China, no? Again, would be very surprised if they're manufactured differently, without a concscious recall campaign, or puplic address of hard/soft fix, etc.

RE:

I too went to the store and tried more boards, and they're all the same... all of them.. so I don't believe it's anything other than intentional design, again, I can't fathom how so many boards would be acting the same, specially across globe, if it wasn't intentional; as this community is from all corners of the globe here.. and we're all experiecing the same thing..

BUT, if it is a batch production issue, then Apple needs to address it.. but I honestly don't believe that.. (see end of my post, RE: contacting Apple).

Now, that I've officially had somewhere to bitch about this, to be honest, since I type all day long, every day (tens of thousands of words/sentences), I'm getting used to it. It's much like, RE:

Okay, maybe I should have said FAST touch typing. If you're racing through your text, you have to make a conscious effort to press Caps Lock.

In that, yes, you have to take a semi-conscious interruption in your typing to make sure you've properly pressed the caps key.

BUT, since I type so much, I have to admit my pace and rythm are now adjusting to it..

LOL.. watch Apple enable a control to override it in Leopard, just so I have to unlearn my "new" old habit.. oh boy..

Well, it makes sense, per the intention, and I suspect that all/most of you will eventually get used to it.. since I type so much every day, it only took me a week to be 40-50% accustomed to it.. I suspect in a couple of weeks, I'll be 100% used to it.

I guess mainly, my inital point was, in line with the following:

LMAO I know just how you feel. I really thought my keyboard was broken.

So I'm glad to find out I'm not alone, and loosing my marbles, etc.

Secondly, my other stress of the points, was that nobody at Apple Canada (was on the phone with them for well over an hour, being transfered to tech, engineering, and the sales, etc.) knew nothing about the issue, which was really a shocker... they had not ONE SINGLE reference to this issue. Again, as I said in my inital post, per this subject, the folks at Apple suggested that as many people as possible let them know about it, so they better the odds are that Apple will formally address the issue; whether it be just informal mention that this is a feature of the boards, or more formally, they might address it per a soft fix/update.

Anyways, this about sums up this thread:

Thought I was loosing my mind / keyboard was broken.. YES
Initially annoying.. YES.
Getting used to it? YES.
Will it become old habit / used to it? YES.
Love the new keyboard? HELL YES.
Did I release all my pent up initial frustrations? YOU BET!

So it appears we've hammered the **** out of this issue. :D

Only parting remarks I have, is to contact Apple and see if the masses can get them to address it, either formally or informally..

Phew!

;)

Cheers,

The Honk.

The caps lock issue is something I've come across in all of my new wired keyboards. I bought two separately as well as getting one with my iMac, and I don't think I'll be buying any more.

The difference is a very subtle one, but I think the Apple keyboard is the least favourite of all of my scissor-action keyboards. As is increasingly typical in my experience with Apple products - all looks, not so much trousers. Key travel isn't quite right, there's a little less give at the end of the travel, and the initial 'collapse point' of the rubber membrane is tougher than it needs to be.

The MacAlly Icekey is still the better pick IMO among Mac-specific scissor-action 'desktop' keyboards.

Spoken like a true Apple zombie :p

LOL..

You know Apple Zombies come in all shapes and forms.. and this here Apple Zombie (myself) pays his bills with his Apple, by typing and typing and typing all day long.. ad nauseum..

So that's where my CAPS LOCK comes into play.

I understand this (Caps Lock) is a trite issue, when it comes down to it.. however, as hominoids, change is sometimes difficult to embrace..

To be honest, I think for the most part, for the folks whom type a lot, and have to use Caps all the time, the change was unexpected. Since there's, at least in my life, millions and millions of key stokes that have formed my/our habitual and physical skill set for typing, this change was not so easily embraced and implemented. Much like learing to kick a soccer ball, with your opposite foot, or throwing a ball with your opposite arm.. it's tough at first, but if you practice, in time you'll get it down..

In reference to my above post, since that time, I'm more at 60-65% used to the new Caps behaviour, as I've probably logged in a another hundreded thousand key storkes since then, and will ultimately, get used to it.. thank goodness.. just don't have Apple go and change it on me again.. :p

But let me add, too, that even though we're bitching about this, I have to admit, for my daily workflow, I could not exist and function as efficiently as I do, if it weren't for my Mac... the new keyboard rocks -- it bumped up my typing speed up by about 15% or so; add my 5 button Mighty Mouse with horizontal scrolling, Dashboard and Expose.. (Spaces coming soon!! -- can't wait -- more efficiency..) well.. c'ome on Shelly! -- it a no brainer.. Macs are superior in every way. I see my staff struggling to multitask like I do on their PeeCees and I have no sympathy. I asked them if they wanted Macs of PeeCees for their laptops, and they all opted for PeeCees.. well, can't win 'em all I guess.. since they're not as efficient due to PeeCees, I have to pay them more..

LOL.

Cheers,

The Honk.

I'm sure it increased your typing speed over the truly terrible previous Apple keyboard, which, I'm sure, you bought like a good Apple zombie and have been happily paying your bills with them up til now.

I used the previous keyboards for a short while, and discarded the wired and wireless boards immediately after that as being substandard, and certainly for me, unusable even compared to Dell's el ultra-cheapo bundled keyboard. Being not a monoculture person I'm used to options and genuinely superior products. Yet I saw many in use and people happy with them. I could only pity the poor Apple Zombies, blissfully ignorant of the inferiority of the function of their products, as blinded as they are by the form.

Remember the original iMac puck? I was amazed how many people stuck with that one because of the way it looked, even if it meant a functional downgrade, because that was a large part of the Apple owning experience - the way it looked, which makes a certain type of person feel good. Nearly 10 years later, little has changed.

Congrats for getting somewhere near to the PeeCee world with your new keyboard where we have a very good choice of superior keyboards, and people in general are more aware of those options being present.

When something doesn't work, there is no need to 'get used to it' unless you are a true Zombie of that monoculture. You get it fixed, or you throw it away and buy something that works / works better.

LOL

Try the Icekey sometime. It's always good to have options, even if it must be 'For Mac-branded'.

Unreal, so much fuss over a capslock key.

It's Pretty Important Key Considering The Amount Of Times It Can Be Used.

Kinda amazing all you guys baffled by why people use the caps lock key. Isn't that it's purpose? To engage the caps lock?

None of Apple's other keyboard have a bizarre caps lock action. So I don't see why people find it strange that certain user like me are rather annoyed at this weird behaviour.

when in vista, i can't get the eject button to work at all, period, while the older apple keyboard's worked. are there any updates or drivers to allow it to fully work with vista?
