New Analyst Mockup and Sales Estimates for Apple's Tablet

I am lovin' what you're saying man! I really hope it is more of a full fledged computer like you're speculating. If it ran snowleopard that would be amazing.

read that, pretty interesting! I really hope they go this route - althought I think it would be more like $799-$899 if they did.

it for sure will not run the same OS as the iPhone, but I imagine a more advanced OS that is more similar to the iPhone's than Leopard. I hope i'm proven wrong though!!!

Thanks!
But keep in mind, Snow Leopard is going to make Leopard more like iPhone OS.

Another thing to think about, if Apple were to want to make appeal to everybody, it will have to be something people will want to use.
Basically, that means there are some physical restraints:
  • Device will have to be light (duh)
  • It will be thin (also duh)
  • It will have to feel durable and strong in your hand(s).
This points to a 10" device that is slightly thicker than, oh I don't know, a Macbook Air. If Apple can make a laptop that thin and still fit everything to run OSX, then why can't it fit all the components into a thicker space? Obviously, it can! There is plenty of room for the proper components to run OSX.
Not surprisingly, the tablet will probably have a SSD. I think it is most likely to have a 64GB version of the hard drive used in the 32GB iPod Touch. Since Snow Leopard has a footprint of ~3GB, that leaves around 60GB to use. Throw a USB port into the mix so you can connect a hard drive and you have all the storage you need. Add the fact that the tablet will most likely be able to connect to an Apple Time Capsule and things just get even better.

Though this is a lot of features, the price will have to be something that the majority of people can swing. So I can't see Apple charging more than $600 unless the tablet has the potential to be for more than just play. If they charge $700-800, then it has to be able to do everything a laptop can do, so it will have to run on Snow Leopard.

Good points - Open up a macbook and look at the internals. get rid of the DVD drive and hard drive ( the device will use a 32/64gb chip like the ipod touch), a smaller battery too (smaller screen, probably less powerful internals)

And about the price - you're right on. This thing can't be $799 and not be way better than an iPod touch.

There is one thing we can count on - creamed pants sometime within the next few months! With something as high profile as this (see: iPhone) we'll surely not be disappointed!!

I'm expecting it to be dockable onto an iMac style stand, but i think for the tablet to slide into a device that already had a screen would be really expensive.
If it "sat" ontop of the stand, with ti being powered by the wall adaptor it could run at 'full power' and be more productive.

Hit New Product(s)

What everyone is missing is that: the really, really exciting "must have" product, won't be an Apple Tablet!

It will be a new line of clothing-- featuring 6" x 9" pockets!

If the Tablet exists and is going to be released, I worry that they will have tried to make it such a revolutionary and record-setting device that, like the MacBook Air, it ends up being ahead of its time.

The Macbook Air mostly failed because it wasn't THAT different from a Macbook Pro.

but then again... Look at the iPhone

i have to say i could not be less interested in this product if it ends up anything as portrayed above. i am and have been an apple idiot since the very beginning and live on apples. i currently own 5, plus about 5 ipods and an iphone. this "tablet" does not interest me in the least. i have an iphone for that.

what i want? i want a stink'n netbook, like or not apple, that's the fact. i would love an 8 or 9" netbook that runs my current programs, not special dumbed down versions from your appstore. i travel and work a lot in asia and i just dont need a big, heavy laptop most of the time. what i need is a small, portable netbook that i can run illustrator, photoshop, and office on, and check my e-mail. that's it.

i predict that a tablet as shown will be about as successful as the silly Apple ipod boombox thing that i have sitting on my desk that i never use. scary that i cant even remember the name of it...

I would get a tablet depending on the OS. An iPhone OS would not be a deal breaker, but I would prefer OSX over it.

This is stupid!!! Every tablet mockup shown to date has just looked like an enlarged iPhone. And guess what, it is just ugly.

You're right. How could Munster possibly say something so ridiculous? How would you type on the screen if that were the case? It may run iPhone OS but the interface will have to differ somewhat because of the screen size and indeed the way people hold it.

I love this Mockup somebody did on this forum.
This is EXACTLY what I would like it to look like! Maybe throw in a camera for video chat but that's it.

FAIL. If it doesn't have a physical keyboard, then it isn't a netbook. For the 1001st time, people want a low-priced Apple netook. The people have made it clear what they want. They don't want an overgrown iPod Touch that, among other things, has to be carried in a case 24/7 because of the exposed screen. Not to mention the fact that netbooks are for word processing, email and surfing--all of which would be made FAR slower with a touchscreen instead of a physical keyboard. This doesn't need to be complicated. Just make a smaller and slower version of the MacBook and call it the MacBook Mini. $600 base $800 nicely equipped. Integrated 3G option with subsidized prices of $199 and $399. End of story. Anything else is just Jobs' ego (and boredom) at play.

OS X would be good

I would buy it in a heartbeat if it ran full fledged OS X. But if it is a gussied up iPhone, I'm just not interested in a codec limited media player.

Tom

my thoughts exactly. if it's OS X, i'll pay up to $1000. If it's iPhone OS (or something as limited) ... I already have an iPhone.
Don't get me wrong, iPhone OS is great. But for a smartphone, not a tablet computer.
I'm not looking for a e-book reader on steroids (but not enough steroids to run flash).

God I would buy that in a heartbeat! WOW. Regardless of the price. That's just BEAUTIFUL. It would be amazing if Apple listened and made it EXACTLY like this

How do you know this?
So you want a netbook instead of a tablet yet you critise this mock-up because it isn't a netbook?!

tying this to a cellular carrier would be an awful thing. I don't need to pay for yet another cellular plan for a device I'd mainly use where wireless is. Give me the ability to CTO one and I'm there. But make me sign up for wireless and this makes it a very expensive compute device.

I didn't read past this comment, so forgive me if this was already said.

Here would be the ideal (read: not likely to happen) plan:

$599 with contract from AT&T (sorry - it can't be CDMA if it sells worldwide)
$899 without contract and a $10/month data tethering plan if you have an iPhone or other tether-capable phone. This is why tethering is “delayed”. You of course can run it just on WiFi like the Touch without any wireless plan.

Like others, I'm NOT paying for another wireless contract (tether, yes if reasonably priced as above).

Let's see what Apple has to offer....

No, I wasn't criticizing the mockup. It is a very good mockup of a product that the public does not want (by and large).

I was disagreeing with the person who said it was a good idea for Apple to make it instead of an actual netbook which the public has been clamoring for for about 1 1/2 to 2 years now.

Can you please point me to where "the people have made it clear what they want" ?

I'd LOVE some info that shows that the public is just dying for yet another netbook

Excited!?

Okay, I'm exited about this tablet thing but I'm not getting the first generation. I've learned so much for being a first gen iPhone user. It's cool to have the first one but you suck so bad when next gen comes out. Holding my excitement but I want to see this soon come to life, another reason to visit apple store. LOL!

Oh--I'm sorry. I guess I missed the first Apple netbook. Can you please provide a link to where I can purchase a new or used one? I mean, you say "yet another" but for the life of me I can't think of a single netbook that Apple has ever sold to the public. Yes, the public does want a low-priced *Apple* netbook, and they have never had one before. It would be as popular as the 3 series BMW is. A way for people to have the Apple experience (and cachet) at an affordable price. Apple's cheapest notebook right now is $1000.00 Most people in today's economy don't have that kind of money for an entry level laptop, and let's face it most people don't need to run Final Cut Pro or CS4 on their laptop. Those that do get a Mac Pro or MacBook Pro.
