Yea this is what I hope to see. Whether they decide to drop the 24" or not, introducing 21.5" and 27" LED displays simply makes sense because of the new iMacs. You'll have matching sized displays which I'm sure many users would appreciate. It makes Apple's product lines more streamlined too.

Anyway, I don't know why not saving $200 to $300 cheaper on something as already expensive as the LED display wouldn't be beneficial to consumers. Given the state of the economy and simply the basic reason that some people just do not want something as large as a 24", I don't see how a smaller and more affordable model would hurt.

For example, a 21.5" display would also come as an opportunity for Apple to market towards not only the low end 21.5" iMac user, but perhaps even the Macbook and Mac Mini user as well.

Tbh i don't see them ditching the 24" display for different sizes, either they introduce new sizes, or lauch a different display technology.

But don't count hem for the holiday lineup. at least this holiday's ;)

It's too close in size to the 24". And it wouldn't be very profitable most likely.

Exactly.

My guess is they will ditch the 24" and introduce a 21.5", 27" and maybe 30"-32" inch display at once. All 16:9. I see this happening Q1 or Q2 2010. It doesn't make sense to keep the 24" now that it isn't used in a iMac anymore. But a 27" ACD would have to fairly cheap in order to compete with the iMac. Something I would love to see :D

Ditch the 24" design after only one year? Designing and tooling a unibody display like the 24" LED Cinema costs tremendous amount of money and time. That's why is it highly unlikely that they will "ditch" the 24". Also, Apple is clearly positioning the 24" as a companion to the MacBooks, the new screens on the new iMacs bear no relevance. Either way, doesn't seem like anything else will be released this year.

This is a question not an attack. Do you think displays are part of the "Holiday Lineup"?

That is a good question. The site was recently updated with holiday garb so I don't think we will be seeing any additions until after the new year. Maybe early Feb.

Again, just an educated guess - I don't have any inside info. :D

To me, the curious thing is the display gap for Mac Pro users. The 24" LED display is obviously not designed for that machine (mag-safe power & the mini-displayport cable is too short) and the 30" model is just too big for some people (me included). I just upgraded to the new Mac Pro (from an older Power PC model). I have a 23" Apple Cinema display that works fine but my older 17" Apple monitor no longer works. I ended up buying my first non-Apple monitor ever. I bought the Lacie 324. Looks to be a nice monitor.

But hey we can still wish for a tablet at the start of next year!!!:D

If Apple released a 21" 1920 x 1080 display, I would be first in line for two of them.

I need 1920 x whatever, and I also need a dual monitor setup, but I've held off because I find my current 24" screen too big. Two of them would be crazy. But two 21.5" monitors... that'd be perfect.

Back in the CRT days the only way to get higher resolutions was to make larger screens, and we all got used to the idea that bigger was better. Nowadays these big imposing monitors seem a bit unnecessary. Keyboards are smaller, you can sit a bit closer...

I suspect a great-looking 21.5", with IPS and LED backlighting (and preferably DVI as well) would sell like crazy - to both Mac and PC users. Even if priced like an Apple product. And getting Apple products onto a PC user's desk always seems like a good idea from Apple's point of view.

Wow, that's exactly why I want a 21.5" (two of them). You nailed it perfectly. I also think the 24" is personally too large for me. Two 21.5" displaying in HD resolution would just be absolutely choice!

I really doubt that Apple will release a 21.5" LED or any other size smaller than the 24".

99% of the people who buy the 21" iMac will never attach another monitor so releasing one with the same specs is pointless to Apple.

Apple got rid of the 15" LCD, then the 17", and recently the 20"
Why would they ever release a 21" with close to the same resolution as the 24".

It makes no business sense, especially when trying to simply product line-ups. They would rather put resources to iPods and Tablets.

Apple prices itself on the high end, and most (99%) people looking for 20-22" LCDs are looking for TN panels under $250.

I also doubt that Apple will release 27" since it would be priced significantly higher than the 24" but lower than the 30". Most people willing to spend that much money are going to want the full resolution of the 30".

Therefore, I predict an update to the 30", and eventually small price reduction on the 24" and no other models will be introduced.

That's the best business strategy for Apple.

Apple is probably using a design -> production system that (hopefully) allows them to make changes like that without a fat R&D/production costs change.

And if the 21.5" is using an LCD panel that will be cheaper (especially considerably so) than the 24", I'm sure that Apple will end up selling those in short order and discontinuing the 24".

That wouldn't surprise me a bit - the 27" isn't that much bigger than a 24" (it's basically wider with the same height), but the 21.5" fits into the size realm the old 20" did...

And I think there's still a fat market for 20"-ish LCDs.

I could see it happening, I just hope they decide to make some matte LCDs.

I think apple will only sell the LED screen from now on...maybe they will make a larger version of it in the future, who knows. But, the regular screens, well, they are just emptying their storage of the old screens, I don't think they are in production any more. If you look at the apple site and click the mac button at the top, you see they have the led screen in the list of hardware, but the other screens aren't even listed. You even have to dig a bit to find them. ANd the old screens are a really bad buy now, that is old and way too expensive for its technology, they should only be bought if you need a monitor and dont want the led beacause its wrong size and the you just MUST have apple design for streamlining your office :D no other reason is good, imho
