Can you still return it? I just replaced my 3TB Fusion HDD portion in my iMac due to failure with an SSD and it's unbelievable how much faster the machine is overall.

There's no way I would do a fusion drive setup again, if you need large capacity storage an external HDD connected via usb3 or thunderbolt dock would be better.
I may look into that. Hmmm...

I'm suddenly really happy that I got the SSD option in my 2017 5K iMac at work.
So happy I went through the pain-staking trouble of upgrading my 2011 27" iMac to a pure 480GB SSD. This will put my old iMac even further ahead.

APFS not working on even Fusion drives mean going forward, the single most important priority is getting the pure-SSD BTO should I ever upgrade from my 2011 iMac.

I think it's time Apple make a 256GB SSD stock iMac.

Filesystems are one part of an OS where I really don't want the developers to rush, I want all the bugs thoroughly ironed out. Because that's where I keep all my stuff.

Indeed. I'm in no rush to have APFS, i'd quite happily not upgrade any of the computers to it for another year. It's just a shame they've stumbled into problems with anything other than pure SSD's and have been working on that for a year.

APFS don't work on fusion for now....the didn't say never...in fact they presented all the advantage on FD during WDC

Are you kidding?! My iMac is only 2 years old. I opted for the Fusion drive and now Apple is [temporarily] rendering it un-upgradable! Wow, seems like someone at Apple just isn't working hard enough.

Apple, how about getting off your High Sierra until it works with ALL your "current" products!

A question by someone not so technically inclined.

My 2011 iMac now has to SSD drives inside but I backup everything onto a traditional spinning drive.

Can I still backup onto a spinning drive or does my backup drive now have to be an SSD?

You'll have no problems. The OS can work with both HFS+ (the old file system) and APFS (the new file system). I've been doing that throughout the beta - Fusion Drive on APFS (and now, back to HFS+) while my externals are all HFS+.

Something missed in all this discussion is that APFS is not yet supported for Time Machine backups - they have kinks to work out there as well. Still, there are key benefits in APFS for making backups (snapshots and cloning in particular), so I look forward to the day when Time Machine is supported on APFS.

Please read. Your Mac will work fine with High Sierra, it will just keep the HFS+ file system.

This makes a lot of sense.

CoreStorage has been optimized over the past few years to do a really good job of deciding what goes on the SSD and what goes on the HDD of a Fusion Drive. For many people, even power users, a Fusion Drive is nearly as fast as a pure SSD because of this.

If APFS can’t meet those expectations yet, it’d be a step backwards to convert Fusion Drives. The beta testing process likely revealed either some bugs in the implementation, or more likely that the performance was not as expected in at least certain configurations and workflows. Deferring the upgrade for a few releases while additional tuning is done removes the risk for now.

There are also SSD longevity concerns on the smaller Fusion drives — if APFS accelerated the expected wear-out, that could also be an issue that needs to be addressed.

I’ve been working on file systems for over a decade — believe me, they’re *hard*.

I'm pretty sure when I installed the HS beta on my iMac with Fusion Drive it asked me if I wanted to convert, to which I said yes. It was a scary process as I recall with a lot of stopping and waiting and baited breath as it seemed the whole thing had failed. It didn't though. I'll have to check this evening if it actually did convert.

I tried to install the GM and I got a weird message saying I had to following some instructions to be able to upgrade to a new version.

My MacMini, which I tried to do later, however, did not ask me if I wanted to convert.

Ignore all the above. After reading more posts I realized what I was saying was irrelevant.

Why should SSD users wait....What do FD users gain?

I don't get it ... I installed the GM on my iMac with 1TB Fusion Drive. It installed just fine. And it seems to run at the same speed it always had. What's the issue here? I'm not in front of the computer ATM to see if it's APFS converted or not.

It depends on which version of the beta was the first you installed. Early betas converted Fusion Drives to APFS, but later betas did not.

You can pretty well assume that your Fusion was still on HFS+ - never converted to APFS. If it was on APFS, the GM installer would have prevented the install, and given you a link to the procedure for converting back to HFS+.

Well, just another year of skipping macOS upgrades. Didn't upgrade to Sierra, and doesn't look like I'll upgrade to High Sierra. There really just doesn't seem to be any pull for me to upgrade. My MBP is SSD, but their features seem like mostly fluff. Thank goodness they don't harass me to upgrade like they do on my iPhone.

Unfortunately (or fortunately) until the larger storage options come into my price range, absolutely spinning drives all day long. As long as Apple keep em spinning and operating fine, APFS can arrive in its good time. If I spec up an iMac with SSD to get close to a 3tb version, I will need another mortgage.

Wonder what the ration is, SSD vs Spinning disk out there in the world?

This should of been mentioned to the Developers testing betas....
I have been testing and installing all of the Betas without issue; up until this weekend when I had time to install the GM.

I was forced to open a bug report this weekend because of all the failed attempts to get the GM installed... thus forcing me to restore twice from Time Machine backups, to provide proof that there was something wrong either with the installer, or a Fusion Drive issue.

Glad to know that I will have to restructure my current Fusion Drive just to upgrade...

Completely agree! Same issue here. Somewhat oddly however I am running the GM on iMac with a 3 TB fusion with APFS. The reason is that I had to do a recovery system install and it does install the GM and doesn’t make you wipe your system. Not sure exactly how this is the case.

So, if you have an internal ssd, you’ll be upgraded to APFS... No election!
Does BootCamp work in apfs? (I think it doesn’t, and don’t know if a “simply works” external implementation exists).
Any other apfs drawback...?
At the moment, apfs seems to lose some functions... for promised future benefits.
I’d prefer to wait for a while...

Are you spending hundreds of character to say that it's better to have it now with bugs instead of waiting untill ready?
In that case you can still force it, so problem fixed for you!

Spending hundreds of characters? Had you READ my characters, you'd have known the answer.

No, I'm saying why release a product now that doesn't support the vast majority of iMac sold in the last 5 years. Why not make it work as promised before release? I get rushing phones because it's a competitive landscape, but not operating systems.
