Remember, it’s not the processing, it’s the RAM. They’ve been skimping on ram this entire time, while talking up a “neural engine” that apparently doesn’t do anything.

What are you talking about? Neural engine is used non-stop. From taking a photo to recognizing pets in your photo library - it's probably used more often than performance cores.

:D Dunno why people have to be so bitter nowadays. Everythings bad. All is horrible. You whine here like little child. A spoiled child.

Come on guys. This is just an mobile phone, just some software. It is not the whole world. Just some software on some small electrical device.

Apple will announce its new AI feature set for Apple devices at WWDC on June 10, and Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports that it will be officially called "Apple Intelligence."
Siri is going to be so pissed that Apple is trying to replace her.

This has everything to do with the topic.

/s
It does. Support for a common file format is a beyond basic thing no other device has trouble with, that continues to get overlooked while Apple gets into the weeds with all these advanced features. It’s right up there with old common complaints about iPhone. Can’t take videos, can’t send pictures in a text, no copy and paste, photos app can’t even view GIFs, etc.
Apple doesn’t care about people who don’t want to pay for music streaming and prefer to locally store their music. It would be wrong to say the music capabilities of the phone are stuck in 2007, it’s actually LESS capable now than it was then.

The comments up above remind me of this classic:

"Who asked for a thousand songs in your pocket?"

(that was the retort here in response to Jobs' iPod introduction where he said "1,000 songs... goes right in my pocket." while introducing iPod on stage)

Not much has changed here over the years.

watchOS being absent is interesting. Does the SIP contain a neural engine at all? I wonder what that means for Siri.
Yes it does (series 9) and it was touted as powerful. Basically I risk having some AI features on my series 9 watch and not on my iPhone14 Pro. Way to go Apple….

In the meantime, you may want to try the Doppler app, though I think it costs $10 to unlock.

There are no shortage of third party apps that can play back all manner of file formats but it’s really not an appropriate solution to have these files sandboxed and treated like a 2nd class music library, treated completely differently from the one natively integrated within iOS.

Funny story, I was trying to load a bunch of MP3 onto my phone just a few days ago, couldn't find an easy way of syncing them to the music app, and finally ended up downloading Doppler, saving the mp3 files into iCloud, then transferring them over via the files app.

it seems like right now, Apple Music is primarily focused on getting users to sign up for their streaming music service, followed by purchase of iTunes tracks. Playing of other music formats seems to be something Apple is content to leave to third parties, and has little interest in supporting for now.

This isn’t anywhere near “intelligence” it’s just better software. Enough with the hype.
The intelligence part comes from not manually coding the logic. The logic is built on machine learning. For example. Manual code might be look up dictionary, that is predefined by people, of words that might go after you type “Hello” and then provides a recommendation. AI instead uses machine learning to scan a ton of conversations and then uses its own way to recommend the next word that comes. Make sense?

I'd be amazed is such a huge update was iPhone 15+ exclusive. I imagine it will be more like the 15/16 can perform these tasks on-device whereas the 12-14 will require a server connection to process commands.

There would be a huge business opportunity to allow M-series devices that are nearby (Mac, iPad, new Apple TV, Homepod?) to process commands from an iPhone locally creating a kind of Personal Area Network-GPT. This would allow for off-device ecosystem processing without anything being sent to a 3rd party server or an internet connection. Imagine an M1 iPad facilitating commands between an iPhone 12-14 and an Apple Watch without needing the web.

That's actually the smartest suggestion I've read recently about AI.

Don’t see any killer features here. Is this where the competition is at?

All I want is for Siri to work.
Hmmm...I don't see any official announcements from Apple.

It may be that it disappoints many, but don't condemn an unannounced product until its actually announced.

I know what you mean, but it’s likely technical limitations rather than just excluding certain iPhones
I guess, but per the table here, the A16 Neural Engine can hit 17 TOPS, while the M1 (which is getting the AI features per the article) can only hit 11 TOPS. This is the most important metric for AI tasks, so by looking at this alone, the 14 Pro should be able to handle it.

Granted, RAM and raw processing power is lower in the mobile chip than the M1, but I’m interested in Apple’s rationale for what the limitations are that prevents older phones from carrying out at least some of these tasks.

Seems like all of this could have been coded somewhat easily. Doesn’t leaving it to AI to make the decisions create a variable that might be less reliable?

Exactly. There are a billion devices out there, and implementing this the way the article suggests would eliminate about 90% (or more) of them from using this service. I don't think so.

Haven’t we been doing electronic transcription services for years? Seems like we are slapping the AI letters on everything to make it appear like something new.

Ok, so the only thing your AVERAGE user is going to care about? Photo enhancement. No need to argue, I’m right.

Got it. So now anytime anyone thinks anything may not be the best idea, it's bad because someone once said who asked for a 1000 songs. I guess we can shut down the forum, boys.

What? That's silly, but not an unexpected "sky is falling" type reply. Thank you.

It's simply an *observation* on how just about every new Apple product (iPod, iPhone, iPad, Watch, AVP, etc) or idea is instantly and negatively received/trashed here. Often in a race to the bottom manner.

Okay? A lot of the criticisms are perfectly valid.

If I can use ChatGPT instead of Siri and get any benefits of on device processing I’ll upgrade to iPhone 16 pro in a heartbeat. The amount of time and money saved using ChatGPT far outweighs the cost of a new iPhone, I just wish they would launch the M4 Studio ASAP.

I’m just glad they are working close with OpenAI, I really didn’t want to move back to MS.

Opt in? Guess that means the hundreds of posters that said they would immediately disable everything won’t have to.
