Why would Apple do a total redesign of the Home-button (iPhone 7), just to remove it for the next generation? I find that strange. Of course, it could be to perfect the haptic feedback for a virtual home button I guess... *Shrug*

Apple already has the solution and you can play with it on your phone right now if you like.

I was wondering when someone was going to bring that up.

I had to use a virtual home button on my iPhone 4 because the home button broke (common on that model after Apple introduced double clicking, but the older buttons weren't designed for that much action).

It didn't take too long to get used to it.

A virtual software bezel is far preferable to a physical home button, so it can be dismissed when not in use, and recalled as needed. I would expect that there would be a dedicated space at the top and bottom, because a bezeless phone orientation won't matter, where the home button will just appear when a finger is placed over it, where other apps cannot place any function controls. So video can expand to the whole screen, and placing a finger in the general location of the home button makes it appear in case the finger needs to be adjusted. Maybe the sensor will be expanded such that exact placement is no longer required as it is with a physical button.

Getting rid of the home button? Oof I hope this is a joke.

I don't need my "home" button to stop responding when something freezes.

What about the front facing camera? Any patents related to display embedded cameras?

Any ideas how front camera and speaker could be integrated in screen? I vaguely remember something about cameras integrated under screen... Or am I just imagining things?

The camera will be a much tougher animal to tame than the fingerprint reader (which was already not an optical device and thus inherently easier to 'hide'), but it has been in the works for at least 10 years:

I think the earliest we could see it surface is after at least a couple iterations of OLED/microLED screens from Apple (3-5 years out). Hopefully I'm wrong, but the current technologies for this just seem too expensive or degrading to image/screen quality for Apple to implement it.

If it looks anything like this amazing mockup we've all seen by now, I'll be: :eek::eek:

Why does this give me the feeling iPhone 8 won't be coming out until 2018?

They will definitely announce next year for the whole 10-year anniversary thing... But we might be waiting for 2018 to actually get it.

Should someone start an "iPhone 8 is the worst launch in history" thread now, just to get it out of the way?

Yes indeed, everyday that passes I'm happier that I _DID NOT_ "upgrade" to the nascent iPhone 7.

It's obvious that the days of the Horrible Haptic Home Button are numbered.

The iPhone 7 will go down in history as Apples worst iPhone ...

Are you serious? The iPhone 7 is an amazing device, and the haptic home button is awesome. Besides cracked screens, the only things to ever go bad on any of my iPhones were one home button (on my 4S) and one headphone jack (on my 6). Personally I couldn't be happier that they are both gone. The iPhone 7 is a durability monster compared to any previous iPhone. The cameras are unbelievable (front and rear). The screen is beautiful. The internals are beastly, and the stereo speakers are a surprisingly great and useful upgrade. It also looks far better than the 6/6S, even better than the 5 IMHO.

The 7 is up there with the 4S as my two favorite iPhones ever. Time will tell, of course, but with the way this thing is built (and being the third iteration of the general body style), I don't foresee it developing any major issues.

Just further confirms what's coming soon. No bezels, no home button, touch ID in the screen... it's gonna be tough to wait for this to be released.
Not for me. Old school 2 year contract expires next year for me.
But I'm ready to see the real iPhone 7 next year.

For the record, I don't understand the constant hysteria here regarding bezels.
The problem is that the iPhone has a bigger footprint for its screen size than most all of its competition. If you could get rid of the bezels you could have the screen size of a plus in about the footprint of what the 4.7 inch model currently takes up.

I don't know I'd call what I've seen here hysteria, but it makes a lot of sense wanting this from a pocketability and just every day usage standpoint.

I can say I'd feel disappointed if they left the bezels for an invisible button. I don't see a point.

This is actually already possible with the new home buttons :(

I think the meaning here was, knowing what's coming, it's tough to wait for the release. Kind of like it was tough to leave your Christmas presents wrapped up until Christmas as a kid. :)

Would be super interesting if you could perform different actions using different fingers. Could open up a ton of more options.

Right now most games are "swipers", but what if index finger was "button A" and middle finger was "button b" regardless of where you touched.

The home button as you know it is already gone. It's software driven on the iPhone 7, and there is no physical button.

We now hard reset using the power button and the volume down button.

Is that right? All the more reason why physical buttons will not go away completely. Unless something significant changes with Apples tech, it seems like the iPhone will always need a minimum of two buttons. Hmmmm. Maybe that's why the Apple Watch has two buttons when it only needs one.

The 7 Home button is the equivalent of power-steering for a car—we all still see a steering wheel. Explain how a no home button design plays out on the display. I'm using Notes, how do I get to the Home screen? Explain it in a detailed manner. "A virtual Home button" is not a detailed explanation btw. How is it used?

Maybe they remove the button and give that space an icon? A lighter shaded one....similar to a watermark. Just brainstorming some. Or....a watermark type icon that just briefly appears when your finger wavers over that section where the Touch ID would be. You could even turn it on/off via settings once it becomes second nature. Aside from a cool factor, admittedly I don't see a huge benefit from doing it that way....aside from freeing up the left/right bezel space on either side of the current home button for other purposes.

Edit: keysofanxiety beat me too it by miles lol. What I get for not reading a little further.

Pretty crazy to think that this could be possible. It doesn't seem clear to me though - would the touch ID portion be under a specific area of the screen, or would this layer be able to read the fingerprint at any are of the screen?
I think it would be the whole screen - maybe constantly checking the ID of the user.

I just don't know how they're going to make an all-display phone look good.

I imagine it is more likely to look good. In the end what does it matter if it's more functional. It's like being concerned about making a round wheel look good when another design may look better. Function supersedes design. By a long way.

I agree! Personally I think Apple are going to spend an extra year making the design and the 7S will be released next year instead. The big redesign will be 2018 (IMO).

I'll bet Apple has moved on from the "tick-tock" naming convention as it has created a marketing headache and isn't really accurate anymore, witness the 6s truly a major revision of internals. Regardless, there's no way an OLED end to end screen is going to be labeled an "s" anything

So I'm still not particularly sure of what these rumors are supposed to mean... is this saying that touchID will be integrated into the whole display and you can touch anywhere to read the finger print, or just at the bottom on the display and they are eliminating the bezel? Or keeping the bezel and making the bottom bezel a touch zone like on android?
