This is ridiculous. It's a display. It should be compatible with Intel Macs, Linux machines, and my dishwasher if I damn well please.

I can usually see the reasoning behind Apple's limitations but this one is outrageous.

The display portion will be. The speakers, isight camera etc may just have limitations. It’s not just a basic display, it has a chip in it and several hardware components beyond a display.

They are compatible as long as your device has a connection to attach to the monitor that delivers the video signal the display recognises. But you won’t be able to use speakers, webcam, etc. with unsupported systems because the drivers won’t exist.

It might be worth holding out for the release of LG’s upcoming 27” 5K Mini-LED display (27GM950B). Seems like it’s using the same panel as the XDR. The LG also boasts dual mode with 1440p/5k seems like a no brainer.

I’d rather get that at a significantly cheaper price and have one display for both my gaming PC and M3 MacBook Pro.

I hope this is true, and if so, the original article should be updated to be clearer.

I wonder how much effort it took to make sure these monitors wouldn’t work with certain Macs.

I mean, the 6K monitor that was just obsoleted worked with Intel Macs.
It’s funny to me when people are always negative when it comes to this stuff.

Apple is a company that makes premium tech. Their mission is to deliver the best customer experience and make lots of money doing so. These are top notch, very expensive displays designed for people who don’t have a problem dropping $$$ on tech.

If someone wants to hang on to their old computer, there are plenty of displays they can choose from.

Also, anyone that bought an intel Mac Pro and wanted an Apple Display already has one.

They don’t need to make their $1600-$3000+ brand new displays work perfectly with outdated tech. It’s crazy to assume that.

The people complaining prob aren’t in the market for these anyway.

If you're remotely in the market for an overpriced $3000 panel, you've had an Apple silicon Mac for many years by now.
Unless you bought (for some strange reason) an Intel-powered Mac Pro in 2023

for well over $6000

If they dropped that much and wanted a display, don’t you think they prob bought one in the last 3 years?

Does it connect with any non-Apple Thunderbolt devices? If so, you could probably install Windows or Linux on these Intel Macs to get it to work 😀.

It's a display! What sort of cool features does it have over other high end displays that require it to not be compatible with a wide range of computers (not just from Apple)?

I'm in the market for an Apple display, but at these prices I'm inclined to look at a Vision Pro as my large MacBookPro display when I'm in my studio. I also put off the purchase of a new TV for this reason. Let's see where the Vision platform goes in the next year.
This is Apple’s plan, continue selling displays at ridiculous prices to push buyers towards AVP Virtual Display, for a few hundred more bucks

What would Mother Nature say about this Tim? Encouraging to ditch intel IMacs

Of course you’ll gladly take them for nothing to recycle!

The more we hear about the new displays, the more I'm reminded of Darth Vader telling Lando Calrissian "I am altering the deal, pray I don't alter it any further".

I am in the market for a new large monitor to replace my aging 30" Apple Cinema Display, which has been excellent even though it's over 20 years old now. I did pick up a Studio Display, and while it's nice it's a bit small, so I want a big main monitor and then will use that as a secondary one. I was hoping that Apple would release a 32" 6k monitor, instead we get today's monitor announcement, which feels like a bit of a joke really. I guess I'll be picking up one of the other 32" 6K monitors out there, they are all $2000 or less and have good enough specs that they should do nicely.

For the XDR model it makes sense given the higher refresh rate and HDR. Intel Macs are Thunderbolt 3-only and, more importantly, only support up to DisplayPort 1.2 over TB, whereas M1 Macs, even those not advertised as Thunderbolt 4, support DisplayPort 1.4 over TB which doubles the display bandwidth.

For the standard model it makes little sense unless there's some bizarre compatibility issues with Thunderbolt 5 on a Thunderbolt 3 host they didn't bother addressing.

Perhaps this time you will recognize the only real reason for Apple's limitations:
To increase profits.
