Because it requires Thunderbolt 5 as it sends a single stream vs the cheat Apple has been using for years even on the older 5k iMacs to display 5k video using Display Stream Compression (DSC) to merge 2 streams together into 1.
Hard to confirm but very plausible. Or some variation on that - the Intel Macs never got beyond Thunderbolt 3 and not all TB3 devices even supported DisplayPort 1.4.

Macs using the dual-stream "trick" for 5k wouldn't be able to daisy-chain two TB displays, and a downstream TB5 port seems to be the main new feature of the new SD.

Bruh what are you saying, there's nothing to confirm. All 5k displays including old Intel iMacs used DSC compression that received 2 streams and combined into one. Maybe do some research before speaking. Before Thunderbolt 5, it was impossible to push 5k over a single Thunderbolt (previous gens) cable.

I have 2x Studio Displays (previous gen) and they do the same that's why it's compatible with all Macs and it even works with DisplayPort using DSC. (I have both of them connected to a 6900XT on the 2019 Mac Pro with a USBC > DisplayPort adapter so I'm not actually running on Thunderbolt. It also works fine with any MacBook.

I think you need to take your own advice and do some research. Clue 1: DSC has nothing to do with merging two streams into one - its a newer feature of DP1.4 and later that allows higher resolutions on a single stream. You're thinking of MST. Clue 2: The 2016 LG Ultrafine 5k supported 5k@60Hz with a single Thunderbolt 3 cable - because one TB cable can carry two DP1.2 streams and combine them using MST.

...which is all irrelevant to the claim that it was quite plausible that Intel Macs simply don't support a more modern DisplayPort mode required with the new Studio Displays. I don't have confirmation of that - and neither do you.
 
It’s funny to me when people are always negative when it comes to this stuff.

Apple is a company that makes premium tech. Their mission is to deliver the best customer experience and make lots of money doing so. These are top notch, very expensive displays designed for people who don’t have a problem dropping $$$ on tech.

If someone wants to hang on to their old computer, there are plenty of displays they can choose from.

Also, anyone that bought an intel Mac Pro and wanted an Apple Display already has one.

They don’t need to make their $1600-$3000+ brand new displays work perfectly with outdated tech. It’s crazy to assume that.

The people complaining prob aren’t in the market for these anyway.

Charged a premium for tech is more accurate than the belief they’re making premium tech; Apple doesn’t make anything anymore, everything they do “make” is designed* and then outsourced to manufacturers or sources from manufacturers and the assembled by a subcontractor.

Yes. Its always been a precedent with the Studio Display. Look at chart below. This is what the Mac Studio display supports which there is no support for machines 7+ years in age. Same thing now.... it doesn't support 7 year old Intel Macs. Its the same precedent as before but everyone is getting getting outraged by the title "no Intel support" when the exact same 7 year limitation was always there.

So that means that you can connect no single computer but an M Series Mac? Not even recent Windows laptops?
read the topic. You will be able to connect the monitor to "unsupported" devices but a lot of features (except image itself) might not work.

you're mistaken. "Receiving 2 streams and combining into one" is not DSC. Actually it is opposite. Only macs that don't support DSC used to use that "hack". If a mac supports DSC it uses just one DP stream.

this obviously is not true. Literally ALL macs push 5K over a single Thunderbolt (3, 4, 5) cable. Some of them use "two streams" hack, the rest use DSC. I will say even more - with DSC you can push 5K at 165Hz on newer macs.
 
I wish they did not discontinue the 32" XDR. I have two and any 27" is a downgrade, even at 120Hz.
I think your xdr displays are going to go up in value.
Do you think the m3 pro chip can smoothly support 120Hz? I've been waiting for the new studio display to come out for months. Actually, the XDR is much more than my planned budget. But it's a one-time purchase. I don't know what to do. It will mainly be used for software coding.
Is there some way you can get yourself a veteran discount through a buddy? 10% off, that would help.

If you think you're going to be stuck with it for 5+ years, I'd say go for it. Might as well be happily stuck with it. (I wouldn't suggest miniLED for any photo editors though; they're better off with the vanilla studio display.)
 
As far as I understand from the technical specifications of the new Studio Display XDR, M3 pro can operate at 120 Hz. However, when I check the specifications of my device, it has a Thunderbolt 4 port, not Thunderbolt 5. Do you think Thunderbolt 4 can support 120 Hz smoothly on a 5K display?

I am holding back on purchasing a few XDRs for my company due to the requirement for macOS 26+ (our plan is to stick with Sequoia for some considerable time yet). The research I have done so far seems to imply that while the XDR works with Sequoia, you are not able change monitor settings (I mean WTF!?).

I am (stupidly) holding onto this notion that they may "back port" the addition of this functionality into a point release for older OS' so we can pick these up. None of the current/rumored versions of monitors using these same/similar panel tech by other manufacturers/licensors interest us, as they all seem to have matte screens (and look rather ugly in our opinion).

With all due respect for your company's decisions, I'm not sure Apple's monitors are the best value for money. They're very expensive (you're paying a hefty brand premium), and while some of their specs are pretty good, others are subpar or even obsolete compared to the competition. In any case, Apple doesn't show a lot of interest or expertise with monitors.

That is understood. Myself (being the CEO) already have the ASD 2022 version, which I hated purchasing due to the price, but otherwise very happy with my decision. I love the monitor, and my staff are envious when we view work product on my screen. I sort of promised them I would upgrade us all when the new version dropped.

I have a love hate relationship with Apple (as many of us do here). We allow ourselves to be "taken" by Apple for these "premium" prices. We know better, but still justify/allow ourselves to get shafted. I admit that I have this disease, but it is what it is. These type of purchases are essentially a write-off, plus I can get business discounts from Apple or tax-free pricing if I purchase through other avenues (e.g., B&H Photo Payboo).

Ultimately, I think I may end up having to set up a burner machine with Tahoe for a bit to see how things go before pulling the trigger. Unless of course something else comes along that catches my eye...

Fat chance this ever happens as Apple does not like putting extra resources into support legacy stuff, these guys ain't Microsoft whos business is supporting legacy. If it's not supported now they are not going to "back port" anything. Maybe if your company was big enough with a 1+ billion market cap ordering thousands of these that might be one thing but ordering a few XDRS isn't going mean anything to them.

From their standpoint if you are the type of user who needs this monitor you are going to buy it at some point down the road as this is going to be their display going forward for many years so they have no issue waiting you out until you are forced to upgrade which Sequoia's end of life is Jan 2028 and this monitor will still be on sale for the same price.
