Apple Maps has greatly improved over the years, but after 5 (or 6?) years, there are still no street view maps. They still haven't caught up to where Google Maps was before they even launched, let alone caught up to present-day Google Maps.

When planning a trip to somewhere unfamiliar, street view is hugely helpful, even if it's a decade-old street view photo.

I find it hard to believe Apple can reinvent Maps- Steve Jobs even admitted that in some cases, others did better at certain things they did - but I hope they catch up or embrace Google on the Maps issue.

I know a guy who had a safe driving distance feature on his car. It would keep a safe driving distance between his car and the car ahead of him on the freeways. He had to turn that feature off because cars kept cutting in front of him because THEY COULD!

So many people will dismiss you if this subject happens to come up. "I avoid damage to my car by not following close." "Please tell me how." Every time I leave the appropriate amount of space, a car takes it. Then I slow down a little to regain the space, and the car behind me passes and takes it. Infuriating.

The Lexus is probably a mapping vehicle. Not sure what about it makes more likely to be autonomous vehicle testing.

Well, if I ever get something terribly ugly installed on top of my car, I can just say I'm part of Apple's autonomous vehicle program to save face.

YESSSS! @AngerDanger killing it as always

I'm not buying that self driving cars are just around the corner. Spend some time on big city thoroughfares and Interstate highways, and watch the lunacy that takes place when human drivers decide you are driving too slow for them. How any AI will be able to deal with the mental cases that inhabit powerful automobiles is anathema to me.
Absolutely agree. Not too long ago, I actually read a quote from somebody much smarter than me -- I wish that I could remember the person's name and link the comment; they were in the industry. Anyway, he or she said that fully autonomous driving is actually much farther away than the media and some of this companies are leading the public to believe. He or she said that we are at least ten years away, perhaps more. I'm inclined to agree.

In my opinion, what we are going to see first is better and better technology for driving cars on the interstate. The interstate is the closest thing to a controlled environment that we are going to get. Then from there, it's a slow and painful process to get autonomous cars working great everywhere else, if it's even possible.

Apple is creating a street view that is so much superior to google's its dumbfounding. They are creating a 3D virtual street view. Unlike the god-awful 2D imagery of google street view, this will be a full 3D rendering which can be moved about and give realtime rendering of where you are.

In short: owned

I think the eventual, and perhaps distant future is that everyone will have a car that drives itself. Just like any technology it will become standard and affordable. Then we won't have "lunacy" while driving. It will all be calculated and cars will be communicating with servers and one another.

Autonomous vehicles and what a joke.
A young lady gets on an autonomous bus and gets raped because she is on her own with a low life.
The same bus gets hacked and runs over people.
You car gets hacked and you have to pay the hacker to use your car.

No, the picture clearly show both guys so engaged into their phones they won't know if something goes wrong.

There is just no way this is for autonomous driving. They are up to something else here, we just don't know what yet. That is a ridiculous overkill of sensors for autonomous driving.
fake news apple quit 2 months ago on it read the media report, even the boss said it.

Reminder: Chris Lattner left Apple and went to Tesla to work on automated driving (among other things) and has since left Tesla.

Either Apple's counter-offer most have sucked or the way they are doing things is not very appealing. When long-time talent jumps to a competitor to work on something your company is also working on, it spells big problems with retention and employee happiness.

Like you said lattner left Tesla after only 6 months so Tesla must be doing something wrong too then I guess. You have no idea what is going on. He wasn't even working on this project at Apple.

Right, they will come out with something better from something that has been useless and far from the competition since day 1. Are you blowing all that smoke yourself or did you just get a nightclub dispenser?

Who is owned? Google or me? I have no insight, just wishes, lol. I hope Apple launches the iPhone of Maps.

But on a Tesla, a person can't even tell where the sensors are. Isn't this likely to be something else like collecting data for maps and maybe something similar to Google Maps Street View? That seems to be a really formidable array of sensors just for autonomous driving. Other autonomous driving cars made by other companies seem to be using much more compact units. I must admit that looks like a very interesting roof-mounted array.

Oh, well, Apple may be well behind Tesla but at least they're trying. Hopefully, this project will bear fruit for the company, in general.

My sister hates that feature. If she's driving behind you, she'll be right on your bumper, no matter what the speed. It's terrifying to be in the car with her or in the car ahead. She is very human.
