I have a macbook air with only one thunderbolt port...if I want to use a separate display, I'm assuming I can't with this adapter. Does anyone know if a low cost two-way thunderbolt splitter will ever happen? Ie. So I can plug in a monitor and a drive?

EDIT: I suppose I could use one of these USB to DVI adapters for the display and then use the thunderbolt port to firewire for drives.

If you purchase a Thunderbolt drive that has a daisy chain port (a second thunderbolt port on it) - you can plug your monitor into that.

-- This has been tested on a Retina Macbook Pro 15 - but in theory should work on any Thunderbolt port.

trying to connect FW ProTools interface & DVI monitor to new MBA?

I'm looking around for the same things as TheBMill..

I have a new MBA (so awesome btw!) with 1 TB and 2 USB 3 ports..

really want to connect my FW400 ProTools 003 Rack and my monitor at the same time... there is TB to DVI and TB to FW adapters from apple, but i need both at the same time really...

i know i can't get the FW interface to work over USB and i hear that the USB to DVI adapters are laggy.. is this true? laggy enough to be annoying to use?

you see the TB docks & apple TB display that can power more TB ports, FW ports, USB ports.. i know the bandwidth is massive..

surely there's a ThunderBolt Y-cable out there that offers 2 ports going into the 1 on the side of my MBA?

daisy chaining ThunderB Hd with FW800 HD

Hi All

Do you think this setup would work?

Thunderbolt HD attached to a MBA as normal with the TB cable. Then the TB to FW adapter plugged into the second port on the TB HD. Then FW800 Cable plugged into the adapter and then into the FW800 HD.

Both drives WD Mybooks with external power.

Also wanting to get a new IveyBridge iMac and think apple will discontinue the FW800 ports. Need to run my current FW800 and a new TB HD all on the same chain.

Any thoughts welcome. :)

Adam.

Good idea. Just tried it and at first it didn't work because I plugged it in after booting into target disk mode, but tried again already connected and the macbook air showed a firewire icon on its screen and it connected. As far as this working with a regular thunderbolt external drive, do you think it would make a difference? Is it possible that target disk mode has a way of handling it that an external drive can't?

Hi, I'm a little late to the party, but... Did you connect a thunderbolt Mac to a Firewire Mac with the thunderbolt mac being the 'external hard disk'? I need to connect a MBA to a MacPro and have the MBA as the external drive via target disk mode. I'd appreciate the confirmation as to whether this will work. Thanks.

Ya it works as long as you connect them before you boot the thunderbolt mac into target disk mode (hold down T while booting up)
