Looks really nice, and finally brings back the scroll wheel! A dedicated mute button and power button are also very nice additions, and there will no longer be a question as to which end is up.

Does anyone know if there will be a way to also use the power button to turn on an amp? With the apparent demise of Harmony, I need something that can control my entire system, or that at least can do so for basic functions.

You can already turn on a receiver/tv with the current appletv. you have to look into hdmi control on the receiver but it’s possible to turn on the tv and have the tv turn on the receiver. Both need it turned on

I was expecting the new Siri remote to have a “locator” feature. So that when it falls in the couch cushions, somehow you can send it a message to start beeping.

Since they released the new Siri remote with AirTags, I’m shocked no one’s said anything about a S8r Remote integration with Find My.

no one’s heard anything about this have they?

Thank you. I'll play with those settings tonight!

I was surprised by this as well. This omission shows how carefully Apple walls off one development group from another, occasionally to their detriment.

I thought exactly the same, no mention of U1 on the remote product page.

They show us an ad about a guy losing his stuff in his couch for AirTag, and then transition to a new TV remote, the one thing you loose in your couch, and it doesn’t have this technology…

I guess we’re supposed to add our own AirTag to a Siri remote.

So now the price for a Siri remote is $59 + $29 = $88.

By far the most I’ve ever seen for a non-programmable remote like. Logitech Harmony.

Apple Tax indeed.

But how many cheap remotes feature voice input, touch controls and work without line of sight?
The shields remote does. Also has a find feature but you have to use your phones app to go into settings to activate it. So it’s not great.

Too little too late. My Sony's built in Android TV is just fine and requires no switching or remote swapping, I'm too used to it now. Turns out it was never about the hardware or the platform; just need to get to Netflix and YouTube, doesn't matter whose box or UI it sits on.

I would have been more excited to learn about a new Apple TV app for smart TV's that allows for all ATV functionality.

This is most evident from the differences in Siri between their products. A closed ecosystem is should have the benefit of integration and handing off tasks back and forth between HomePod, Watch, Phone and AppleTV.

- Tell your watch that you want to watch a movie on AppleTV
- Tell AppleTV to text the kids that its movie time
- Tell HomePod to play music everywhere INCLUDING your 3 AppleTV’s connected to a pretty awesome sound systems

But in real world tasks they are all so isolated that they dont know each other exist and many users gave up on don’t bother asking Siri to do anything.

(Back to topic, I want that remote but the lack of AirTag is annoying because I lose it all the time. So as much as I want this remote, I think I may instead just get an AirTag and glue it on my current remote) :D

looks like not worth it if you have a current 4k, but i do really want the remote since i despise the current remote
i will buy the remote seperately or if there is a decent trade in i might buy the new 4k
hope hope we can buy remote stand alone
they owe it to current atv owners who have suffered with their awful remote for years :(

@slomojoe It’s in the press releases that you can buy it standalone and it works with previous ATV’s. The standalone cost is $59. An additional $29 if you want to glue an AirTag to it.

I’m thinking that can’t be why. They’ve opened Find My up to third party developers. Like Chipolo is the 3rd party version of AirTags. If 3rd parties have access to it, surely the ATV group does?

The rumors have been that this AppleTV has been ready for release for almost 2 years.

So from that perspective then the A12 processor, the missing spatial audio, the lack of U1, the kinda ugly remote and the mostly featureless update makes sense. This is an early 2019 device being sold as brand new in mid 2021.

Will existing games have to be updated for the new remote

Hope Sony and the App designers do remember to update their software for you.
