I guess we’re supposed to add our own AirTag to a Siri remote.

So now the price for a Siri remote is $59 + $29 = $88.

By far the most I’ve ever seen for a non-programmable remote like. Logitech Harmony.

Apple Tax indeed.

How the hell are you all losing your remotes?

I have three of them and have yet to lose one.

The rumors have been that this AppleTV has been ready for release for almost 2 years.

So from that perspective then the A12 processor, the missing spatial audio, the lack of U1, the kinda ugly remote and the mostly featureless update makes sense. This is an early 2019 device being sold as brand new in mid 2021.
What do you think is ugly about it? It’s just an aluminum rectangle with black buttons—can’t really get any more minimalistic. Do you mean that it’s too minimalistic?

Those who are going to buy the new Siri remote—what are you going to do with your old one? I’d think it’d be hard to find anyone who needs it and would take it for free, much less buy it from you. Just going to recycle? You think Apple will recycle it? It’d be ideal if Apple accepted it as a trade in with a $10 credit toward the new remote 😆.

Well, apparently subjonas loves it, has no idea how a grown adult could lose it in the couch cushions, and considers it the greatest thing since sliced bread.

but for those of us who are ticked at Apple because of this. I think the upside is that 3rd parties are developing ATV remotes. And 3rd parties are developing Find My devices. Surely we see 3rd party ATV remotes that support Find My?

but with a 3rd party remote, you’ll be losing Siri. So you’ll have to choose, either Siri or Find My.

i‘m gonna get one of these new Siri remotes. It’s probably the most Apple fanboy thing I’ve done. But I’ve got 5 ATV’s and I’m only getting one of these remotes. So not that bad a fanboi. Waiting on Find My from a 3rd party for the other 4 ATV’s.

I would have been more excited to learn about a new Apple TV app for smart TV's that allows for all ATV functionality.
Don’t think that’s gonna happen any time soon, I mean why would they as it would make the ATV redundant.
They might add it one day but certainly not until they’ve come up with some other killer feature that can only be used on an ATV.

Just don’t lose it. Easy

the problem with the old remote isn’t that I lost it. It’s the touchpad. 2 of those Apple TV’s are at my 70 year old mother’s house and she’s never been any good with the touch pad....

I could explain more. But it’d be boring.

I’m not particularly crazy about the touchpad either.

I’ve been waiting on a replacement remote that is less dependent on the touchpad like this new Siri Remote is. But I figured it’d have Find My capabilities also, because of all the publicity with AirTags.. But it doesn’t have it.

So bizarre I was assuming the new remote would have Find My. And they announced it in the exact same event they announced AirTags. But it doesn’t have it,

Basically, I’ve been waiting for a new Siri Remote. But I figured it’d have Find My. But Apple decided to skip it.

I don’t see it being useful myself but I know lots of people lose their remotes. I don’t think I’ve ever lost one of mine I always put them in the same place. but would be nice for the people that don’t remember.

Hope Sony and the App designers do remember to update their software for you.

Sony and Google are partners. Google owns Android and YouTube. I'd have to believe that Android TV is the world's largest smart TV platform, if not they're at least top three. I'm not worried about obsolescence. Just disappointed that Apple doesn't take Apple TV seriously enough to give the customers what they want. If not for its use as an Apple Music 'speaker' and a way for me to watch my home movies, I wouldn't need one at all.

Apple TV is better as a platform, not a product.

All Smart TV's come with a UI that allows users to get to YouTube and Netflix, it's really 90% of what anyone needs. And Amazon and Roku make tiny little devices that use USB for power and can travel to hotels with you, far more convenient.

Apple TV should be discontinued as a set-top-box and be reconstituted as a service, as an app. I pay $13 a month for Netflix. I'd pay $13 a month for the Apple TV+ content as well as access to Apple Music and all my iCloud home movies. What I don't need is another thing plugged into my Smart TV with its own remote and its own UI. It's inconvenient. I want to hit a button on my Sony remote, see Apple TV as an app right next to Netflix, tap that, and have access to everything that Apple TV the hardware provides.

More buttons than the original (white plastic) remote and the 2- / 3-gen aluminum remotes... function is what is important... if it works better than the glass-top remote from ATV4, it's a win.

Lack of "Find My" shouldn't be an issue since the new remote looks something like 3x bigger than the old ones...

I really hope Apple doesn't listen to you since the ATV4K is a much better streaming device IMO than smart TVs or cheap Fire TVs or Rokus.

If you want to watch your iTunes or TV+ content on your smart TV you already can. Doesn't require taking the box away from people like me.
What I don't need is another thing plugged into my Smart TV with its own remote and its own UI.
You should consider that other people may have other needs. For example, one of my ATVs is connected to a projector which doesn't have inbuilt streaming applications.

Google has a long track record of abandoning products. And the updates of android software is up to the device manufacturer. What also is a problem are the individual app designers not updating their smart tv apps.

Personally, I feel like it looks like a sloppy mix of the old slippery silver remote and the current flat edge aesthetics. Its an improvement but it doesnt actually solve any of the existing problems (ergonomics, couchability) or offer new features (find my, programmable buttons, gaming).

I‘m not saying any of this is “bad”, I’m just pointing out that this long delayed product would’ve been considered an incremental update in 2019. So in 2021, when AppleTV is now a standard channel on many TV’s and boxes, then its tough to say this $200 box is the revolutionary AppleTV upgrade that we’ve been waiting for.

oh okay, LOL.

I thought you weren’t trying to take a cheap shot.. But apparently you were! (I know you were joking, it’s not a big deal).

Try telling your 70 year old mother not to lose the remote. It doesn’t do any good. I’ve had to get in my car and drive to her house to find that damn thing.

Apple needs a locator feature on their remotes. Inexcusable they don’t have them.

i agree with 90% of what you say. Especially the aesthetics. And I believe what you posted earlier about this Apple TV having been developed 2 years ago. It just makes too much sense for that not to be true.

but what I think you left out is this new Siri Remote is less dependent on the touchpad. Because that wheel on the new one is clicky. Have you tried clicking in the edge of the old touchpad? It usually doesn’t work right. I’m assuming that now that the new remote is clicky, it’ll work right.

That was one of the two innovations I was looking for. Less dependent on the touchpad. And the other one was Find My, which Ikve already gone over too extensively.

One solution of course is you could just program all the remote functions on a different remote that she’s less likely to lose.
Most TV remotes have all the required buttons that most people probably don’t even use so you could just make them accessible via the TV remote if it has those buttons available.

I’m thinking that can’t be why. They’ve opened Find My up to third party developers. Like Chipolo is the 3rd party version of AirTags. If 3rd parties have access to it, surely the ATV group does?
The issue wasn't that the Apple TV group didn't have access to Find My, but rather that they didn't include the hardware that would have allowed Find My to work with this. That's the evidence of the wall. Had the team working on this remote had access to the specifications for the AirTags, it seems highly probable that they would have added this to the remote.

Don't get me wrong: I really like this upgrade and have missed the scroll wheel functionality greatly, but the ability to easily find a lost remote would have been a huge plus and would have shown that Apple's left hand knows what its right hand is doing. One also could argue that this is now a key feature since it's present in Roku's non-awful alternative at a much cheaper price.

Wow! Thanks for this. Watching the event, the remote seemed so much bigger. Maybe the actor had tiny hands? 😆
