The 4k (4026 x 2169) Apple ProRes 422 Proxy coded movie has a bitrate of 146 MBit/s at 25 FPS, measured on the MBP. The same movie rendered as 4k MP4 (h.264) has a bitrate of 55 MBit/s at 25 FPS - roughly one third of the ProRes file. Call it imagination, but the Apple ProRes movie looks clearly better on the ATV than the h.264 movie. And especially for timelapse movies, the quality of the footage is essential ("milky way at night"). So I still wonder, what these movies will look like when rendered with a higher quality Apple ProRes codec. Unfortunately I did not find a way to display the bitrate in the VLC player on the ATV. VLC is the only player able to play the Apple ProRes movie smoothly.
But I ordered the new ATV with the A12 Bionic so I will see, if the ATV is the bottleneck as you mentioned or if it's the 1 GB ethernet / NAS combination (what I assume). I will update this post with the result.
Received the new ATV 4K Gen2 today. When playing the ProRes movie, there really is an improvement. Except of the judder in the closing credits, the movie runs smoothly and looks great. I will surely have to do some further testing to get a better impression of the capabilities of the new device, but so far it looks good. But I'm still pretty sure, that with a 10 GbE ethernet connection, even better results would haven been possible. Finally, the first impressions of the new remote are very good. Much better than the old one. No more reasons to complain on this topic ...

Do you have a high-performance Wifi 6/ax access point available? Even at home but under "ideal" conditions these can transfer a tiny bit more than the 114-118 MiB/s of 1 GbE even with 2x2 antennas (don't know about the antenna design of the ATV 4K 2021 yet)

Not yet. I've just invested in a new switch with four 10 GbE ports. My Wifi access points are still WiFi 5/ac. I'm using two AVM 2400 Fritz repeaters (1 GBit/s, AC) in LAN bridge mode. AVM has just released the 6000 Fritz Wifi 6 repeater, but it's awfully bulky. The 2400 repeaters are very slim and can be plugged in a socket - perfect. I hope, AVM will release a Wifi 6 - or better a WiFi 6e - successor for the 2400 repeaters soon.
But I agree with you. A Wifi 6 connection to an access point would probably bring a little better performance. But the Wifi 6 AP would have a 2.5 GBit/s LAN connection, not 10 GBit/s. And as every Wifi, the performance of the radio signal depends on the amount of concurrent traffic. With a 10 GbE ethernet port, I would have more bandwith and no trouble with other family members surfing the internet. Please Apple: Release an ATV Pro - please!
