Yep! Add support for all of the different video codecs and include a USB 3.0 port and I guarantee they would close to double thier market share. Unfortunately, they just seem completely unwilling to go there.

They won't jeopardize their iTunes Store sales - hence the lack of support for, say, MKV.

Why there hasn't been a new Apple TV yet...

SOFTWARE

* The UI needs a complete update to handle Apps, yes like iOS

BUT

* The UI and the Apps need to be designed, adjusted or tailored to work for a 10 foot interface style and the methods of control worked out

* The App Store for Apple TV needs to contain Apple TV specific apps only to create the best customer experience and I'd wager all this time has been (and continues) to rewrite key apps to be amazing on a 32" or larger screen with a HDTV aspect ratio, properly scalable graphics, and reworked layout.
Look for AT LEAST 50-100 Apple TV 4 10 ft. interface ready apps at launch.

* These apps will definitely include 'channels' as we have now but improved and likely to be more uniform in UI.

* When searching for a show or movie, like the Tivo, will find the content and tell you which service has it for streaming, rental or purchase (maybe Apple will buy CanIStreamIt) and let you pick and play immediately.

* A Live TV App could allow you to see what Live TV options each other app offers to you in one place and to 'flip' live channels. The live content NOT available would be shown as an color muted option with the chance to add service or app from within the Live TV app.

* The Apps could be divided by what you do with those apps:
* See (video content, TV/Movies)
* Hear (Music, audio podcasts, white noise)
* Play (Games)
* Communicate (FB, Twitter, Google+, FaceTime, iMessage,
Instagram, Pinterest)

* Know (weather, sports scores, stocks, Flipboard, Maps)

I believe Apple has also been holding out for more content arrangements and to figure out how to incorporate more Roku/Plex level choices without killing iTunes content sales. Amazon does both content sales AND a Netflix style streaming service. Apple needs to offer a similar service or partner with streaming services.

HARDWARE

Also, to run the next generation TV settop box requires more horsepower.

Responsiveness to user interaction, better buffering, smoother graphics transitions require not skimping on processor, RAM and buffering storage.
A new Apple TV would work well on current iPod Touch hardware with maybe a little more graphics processing thru a separate onboard chip.
One of the biggest frustrations with current settop boxes is the slight delay between selecting options and other interactions when we've been accustomed to instant responses from our smart phones and tablets. Also, an App Store and environment require far more storage than the current AppleTV offers. This won't mean the Apple TV size radically changing...maybe an extra 1-2 inches.

My predictions (with a sprinkle of hopes thrown in) for the Apple TV 4.

CONTENT/MONETIZATION

Maybe a partnership with Aereo to get local programming......

Maybe a partnership with content providers (give them a very small piece of hardware sales as an incentive, ad revenue, customer consumer profiles (MINUS names and addresses, more demographic info and content choices), a measuring tool for ratings measurement.

What do you guys think?

Interesting food for thought. As far as Aereo is concerned, the Supreme Court has agreed to hear an appeal by broadcasters. http://www.cnbc.com/id/101323474

Lower courts have so far mostly sided with Aereo, and a win at Scotus would change the entire tv content consumption landscape. Upstarts like Tablo have an even better chance at legitimization, as the user provides their own antenna, to distribute the free, ota captured content thru the internet or a wifi network, to their own multiple devices.

Tablo's approach effectively takes away the broadcaster's assertion, that Aereo is illegally distributing copyrighted material, for financial gain, to their customer base.

I frankly can't wait to find out how all this ultimately shakes down, at which time a radically redesigned Apple TV would have the potential to harness 'the best of all worlds', and become the ultimate entertainment hub of our lives.

From Comcast :

If you use a CableCARD device instead of a Comcast cable box, you’ll receive one-way digital cable channels but not our interactive
guide, pay per view events or On Demand programming.

If you think customers are going to drop watching PPV or On Demand I have a bridge for sale.

;)

This is from Tivo's website:

TiVo and Comcast have partnered to give you the ability to access XFINITY On Demand through an application on your TiVo Roamio or Premiere. When released to your market this feature will be available at no additional cost; however, please be aware that Pay-Per-View ordered through the app will be charged to your Comcast bill.

umm..new set top box, not really that interesting...

I mean after all.. Apple has its hand full with trying to constantly get content providers.....

Also the same with the Apple Television too..

So, i'm just wondering if Apple's want's to look at this from a different perspective by saying "maybe content providers will come on-board more if we have our very own sep-top box we control", "or maybe "we'll let content providers have control"

I think their resisting to some degree because it's not theirs.. It's a service they Don't control, and they want all the control.

So ya, maybe this may be something.

32GB is no where near enough for serious games

Saddly no. Games could very well be a byproduct but without a far larger storage medium "serious" games won't be happening. Most bigger games on full PC or Console are pushing 20+ GB of space (many way more), which is eaten up by the "HD" textures and assets.

I didn't write that 32GB would be sufficient for serious games. I wrote that 32GB would be necessary for serious games.

I think Apple will want to keep the $99 price point, so more than 32GB this year is probably out of the question, especially since 32GB would be sufficient for 4K movies.

32GB is no where near enough for serious games
i was playing assassin's creed on my xbox one just now and the install is 40GB. for skylanders for my kids its also around 30GB. there is a reason why the PS4 and Xbone have hard drives
If you're expecting it to compete head to head with PS4 and XBox One, you're going to be severely disappointed. 32-64 GB would be enough because that's what's on the iPhone and iPad. There are plenty of people who would be happy with A7 level games. In fact, there are probably (much) more of these kinds of gamers than there are the hardcore gamers who won't satisfied with anything less than a PS4/XBox One.

Apparently you have never used a CableCard device live a TiVo.

the last game i bought for the xbox requires 40GB of space. until apple goes back to spinning disks there is no chance ios games can be as in depth as console games

yeah, that is another point. I definitely do not see the AppleTV getting the same quality of games as the Xbox One or the PS4, but that does not mean the AppleTV cant be a hugely popular gaming console.

If you think about the iPod touch and iPhone, the games on them are nowhere near as complex as the games on the DS and Vita, but Apple made a huge marketing push for iOS games and it significantly ate into Nintendo and Sony's market share. If Apple was able to upset the handheld gaming market, its possible it could do the same for the console market.

But, there are a couple key differences in the portable gaming market and the console market to look at that may put a damper on Apple's push into console gaming:

1. Everyone needed a cellphone and people do not like carrying around two devices. If their cellphone is "good enough" at gaming, they are less likely to buy a slightly better dedicated device. People do not NEED an AppleTV.

2. People bought smartphones over dedicated gaming devices because smartphones can do more. The same cannot be said between the AppleTV vs. PS4. Both the PS4 and AppleTV can stream content. The only difference between the two devices is that one is more geared towards gaming and the other is geared more towards streaming. One does not have a huge selling point over the other.

3. Portable gaming devices have some of the same constraints as smartphones. They both need to be charged so they both are designed to be energy efficient to maximize battery life. They both need to be light and slim which can limit the specs in the machines. There are not as many constraints for the PS4 and the Xbox One. There has, however, been a trend in dedicated streaming boxes to make them as small as possible. Because of this, the AppleTV cannot significantly bump up its specs without significantly increasing its size. Increasing its size would go against the market trend. For this exact reason, I do not think the AppleTV could become "good enough" at console gaming to overthrow the PS4 and Xbox One.

I know this post seems a little contradictory and it is. In short, I think Apple would have to completely redesign the AppleTV to make it bigger and have beefier guts to even think of competing with the PS4 and the Xbox One. But, there were a lot of people saying the same exact thing ~5 years ago with the portable gaming market. So, if anyone is going to pull off disrupting the console gaming market, Apple is in the best place to do it and has the track record to back it up.

Please cut the cord. ........... With itunes. Make the ATV an itunes server so I can turn off my computer. My three ATVs, 2 jail broken & an ATV3, all wired, at some point loose the connection with itunes/NAS. And Tim, leave the back door open, they'll fly of the shelve if you keep the current price point.

I think the original AppleTV could do that. It was not very popular.

the A7 is a decent CPU, but 1GB RAM is not. neither is 16GB raw unformated storage. all the good games on ios are in the 2GB range once you fully install them and they download all their temp data.

for a while i thought ios was going to take over gaming, but its not. lego marvel superheroes is well worth the original $60 price tag on my xbox one along with skylanders. these offer months and months of progressive gameplay.

my oldest son is always downloading new games onto his ipad because most of them are crappy throwaway games he gets bored of very fast. you can have good games on the ipad and some devs do sell them at $10 to $20 each, but the lack of RAM and storage is the limiting factor now.

and apple's obsession with expensive flash memory isn't helping

If you're not being innovative, or growing in new directions, you are basically dying a slow death.

:D :D :D :D

And if you spend your resources on distractions that are clearly ourside of your core competency, you'll basically die a fast death.

Remember Apple in the 90s?

Apple has so much dang money, they need to start "creating" their own original content for the ATV! They could create Apple's own Food Channel app to go on the AppleTV, along with its own Travel Channel App, et.....

Heck, they should have been the ones to spring first and make their own movie about Steve Jobs. They could easily create their own movie channel app, hiring actors, producers, directors, etc, and start coming out with their own Apple produced movies, all for the AppleTV owners. Screw HBO, Showtime, Cinemax, Starz, etc.... Come on Apple, learn to be more proactive when it comes to competing for video content!

Apple should also make their own music for the iTunes Store.

Tim Cook can lay down some sensitive singer/songwriter stuff.
Phil Schiller can do some dub step, Jonny Ive some techno.

Yup!!

I guess someone at Apple has been viewing my posts on here. I suggested earlier on here that Apple should look into buying Tesla, and now there is a possibility it might happen at some point, or at least some form of collaboration between the two companies. I still think they need to get into the drone industry as well.
