Apple should spend some of their billions by getting into the production business and creating original programming, like Netflix.

This has been covered before in this thread but why would they and who would watch it - you wouldn't get say Fringe or Helix or Homeland or Comminity or many other TV greats from Apple or Netflix

If Apple can get the AppleTV to be hugely popular like the iPhone and iPad, then I could see it completely wiping out the already struggling Wii U but not really making a dent in the Xbox one and PlayStation 4. The CPU/GPU is not powerful enough to entice hardcore gamers and I do not think this will change in a major update to the AppleTV. Current A series chips are not strong enough and I dont see Apple switching to a 3rd party chip.

You never know though. Apple does have a HUGE number of potential customers. Also, Apple would be able to leverage the multitude of iTunes and GameCenter accounts which would give it a huge jump start into the gaming arena. And if iPhone/iPads can be used as controllers, most people who buy an AppleTV would not need to buy anything extra to play games on it. Those same premises completely disrupted the dedicated handheld gaming market.

If

If this is a big move, then price point is going up. Really the $99 price point is too small. Hence Apple doesn't commit to it.
With the XBox One being $500, there is plenty of room to bring out a value proposition and still actually make some money. Though the $35 Chromecast does put some pressure on the low end of the market. Though I've found very few uses for the Chromecast that I've got. But the potential for the device is pretty large.

Ha Ha!!

sorry but you have no idea what sort of company apple is -- they arent in the business of making network television or feature films. they are a hardware company. they build only those products which are their core business (home & personal computing devices) and help sell more hardware.

being successful is being able to say "No" to ideas, even if they seem like good ones.

And you really "have no idea" how much surplus money Apple has.

:D :D :D :D

There won't be a cable tuner in this. A cable tuner does more than tune to a station. It also descrambles a signal. There is no way Charter or Comcast would allow a 3rd party device do the "initial" descrambling. It could receive the descrambled signal and place a layer on top to show a grid of the stations available though.

While I wholeheartedly agree that there will not be a cable tuner in this device (streaming is the future), have you not heard of CableCard? My TiVo has been descrambling cable for quite some time...

the last game i bought for the xbox requires 40GB of space. until apple goes back to spinning disks there is no chance ios games can be as in depth as console games

Apple has so much dang money, they need to start "creating" their own original content for the ATV!

I don't get this either. They should have a 24/7 channel airing which is free and exclusive to Apple TV. It should be a replacement for HBO and those tired channels. Something that is entertainment and not pure propaganda... wait... it's Apple. Nevermind.

honestly, I would like a USB port on it to plug in my hard drive with a mass collection of movies. Yeah, I already use airplay and my MacBooks hdmi port, but it would be nicer and easier to use the Apple TV as my hub.

I have all my movies saved in my iTunes library, which is pointing to an external drive that's connected to my iMac.

My Apple TV see's all my movies from within iTunes, including movie art and info. I find this to be a great solution.

Siri - no, the ATV sits too far away from users (In general) for this to work
Built in Camera - use an iPad
Profiles - Use a Mac
SSD - not going to happen there is enough flash
Remote - I use my iPhone/iPad/iPod
802.11ac - as a streaming device 802.11n is fine
Bluetooth - maybe
You lack so much vision, it's hilarious. ATV sits too far away? Just take a look at Microsoft's Kinect. It works splendidly.

Use an iPad instead of having a built-in camera? So people should spend hundreds of dollars on another device just to video chat? Bringing video chat to the living room is on the rise (again, Xbox One, TVs with built-in cameras, etc.).

Use of Mac instead of profiles? How does that even make sense? Having people be able to customize their own AppleTV UI (app placement, settings, iCloud syncing, etc.) is absurdly intuitive (again, Xbox One does this). A Mac is a computer and we're here discussing a niche entertainment device.

SSD is flash, so you don't make any sense and my argument is valid. You have no idea how big apps are going to be, how big games are going to be, how the infrastructure of cacheing/saving videos/photos/shows is going to evolve. Why limit it to its current 8GB (or whatever it is).

Using the iPhone/iPad/iPod is fine, but it shouldn't be the only option if you want to do certain tasks (like enter a channel number or something).

Just because 802.11n is 'fine' for you doesn't mean it's fine for everyone else, why not update to latest wireless standard and keep it on par with Apple's Macs and AirPort Extreme?

Let's not hold back innovation here.
Apple like making profit on their hardware, no way they could sell all that for $99
Not disagreeing, just dreaming! :)

Zoom Zoom!

Hello! Apple is in the technology hardware business, not the entertainment business. They need to focus on what they do best.

Dude, Apple has so much money, they could buy Tesla outright ( that is, if Elon was looking to sell it ), and easily get into the electric-computerized auto business, and not even bat an eye over the cost.

:D :D :D :D

I don't know how many times I've been ready to buy and Apple TV and then decided to wait because a new one must be coming. Now it might actually happen!

The only reason I see to release a new box is to increase the on-board storage to allow an app store. Well, maybe not the only reason, but that's what I'm hoping for.

----------

I'm pretty sure if Apple released an Appletv/Tivo box, that I would sell my first TWO unborn children for it. I'm also pretty sure that my wife would sell me for that kinda box.

Most people are not familiar with the sheer elegance of the TiVo experience. My TiVo box has kept me from getting anything else because it is a pleasure to search for content and fast forwarding is so smooth.

I do have an X1 box as well and while it has gotten better, it is in the stone age compared to my TiVo.

TiVo on Apple HW would give me a nerdgasm.

If the new ATV has the A7, I'd have to guess it will also support gaming. There's not much other reason to have it since the current ATV handles HD just fine.

That is specific to the US, big though the US is I can't see Apple restricting their product to just one market.

I really hope it has an App Store, a large amount of flash storage, can use MFI gamepads, ac wireless, and other features others have listed before me.

Hopefully apple will keep the price down, so as to encourage this device to become common in people's homes and grow the market for tv connected ios devices.

Crossing my fingers that this will be a worthwhile upgrade.

I agree. Cablecard is limited to the us, and the cable companies have made a mess about making them easy to set up.

However, combine an App Store app with a silicon dust network cablecard tuner, and it may be possible to roll your own apple dvr. Hopefully if we get an official Apple TV App Store someone will look into the viability of this.

There is no way new Apple TV is going to include a Cable TV tuner. Apple is not the kind of company that goes back in time for features.

Agree completely. People keep expecting this device to be something it isn't, and they can't see what it actually is. Why do we want a device that connects to some outdated (traditional cable/satellite) model of viewing video? We want to cut our ties to cable/satellite, not strengthen them. The video distribution model has been changing for years, let's finish the transition not delete all the gains made over the past few years.

No tuners, no recorders, the only major change this device needs is an app store, or a shelf in the current one. :)

Zzzzzzz

Wake me when they add an Amazon instant video channel. Is Apple threatened by Amazon? They don't seem to have a problem letting Netflix be on ATV and they compete with iTunes, too.

I see VERY few people looking for a console version of the AppleTV. Most are looking for the SDK to open up to AppleTV, and to play iOS AppStore games on their Apple TV. 32Gigs of spinning HDD in a base model, can handle most of that. No need to do more, in order to sell like hot cakes.

Because you can buy movies and TV shows from Amazon, you can only stream with Netflix. Hope you have a nice looooooooong rest!

The longer this drags on the less convinced I am that Apple knows what they want to do with this product. Although I'd like an Apple branded TV set I can't see the logic behind it. It would inevitably be a niche product with limited appeal at the high point they would charge.

Everyone in the TV set business is losing money and either selling off their TV units or merging them to make cost savings. Add the fact that very few people would be willing to upgrade their TV every year or two, which is how Apple has managed to make so much money from the iPhone/iPad and it doesn't make for a convincing business model.

It would seem more sensible to simply upgrade the existing AppleTV box to compete with the PS4 and XBox as a home media server. The Hollywood studios might be difficult to deal with but the games developers will get into bed with anyone which is why they're making so much money.

The only way I could see this being true is if they had a "passthrough" feature like on the Xbox One.

That's not happening either. Xbox One "HDMI passthrough" thing is a nasty hack.. you need IR blasters to change channels etc. You really think Apple is going include IR blaster in the next generation Apple TV?? Not a chance.

Before you criticize, watch SJs view on the subject first.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=FTtm8n5KCOc#t=5494

1. No tuner (too many technologies, bands, providers, regulatory approvals across the globe). Also means no DVR required. DVR is in your cable/sat box, otherwise its all served from the cloud.
2. HDMI in/out.
3. IR blaster/3.5mm out and licensed access to Logitech Harmony IR database.
4. Integrated channel guide which allows Apple to interleave their own on-demand content into the guide.
5. 64-bit A7 with 4k video support.
6. Siri voice search from your handheld iOS device which already has noise canceling mic and will be closer proximity to the speakers voice for better accuracy.
7. App store!
8. Game controller support.

Anything less and I am not interested.

Make it so, Tim!
