Well if Apple brings 8k video to iPhones this year, the new AppleTV needs 8K support.

not necessarily.

And why would that be? The original 48kHz maximum limit has long since been superseded, with manufacturers now running at significantly higher bitrates - 1.5Mbps and more.
Because HDMI eARC has far more bandwidth available for lossless audio channels. Which consumer devices are using uncompressed 5.1 or 7.1 over optical?

to your point, which content is using lossless HDMI audio channels short of UHD/Bluray. very few people care enough to pay for more than compressed streams these days, unfortunately

and last i checked, you aint playing a uhd in an appletv...

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman today outlined his expectations for Apple's event on Tuesday, September 9, with his report offering in-depth details about the iPhone 17 series, a trio of new Apple Watch models, and third-generation AirPods Pro.

The final section of his report listed even more products that are "also coming soon," including updated versions of the Apple TV, HomePod mini, AirTag, iPad Pro, and Vision Pro. Across his previous reports, he said that all five of those devices would be updated later this year, but it is unclear if any of them will debut at the iPhone event.

It is unlikely that all five of the devices will be announced next week, as that would be too many new products at once, but perhaps one or two of them will debut. There is precedent for Apple TV and HomePod mini announcements during iPhone events, and a new AirTag would also be a timely announcement, given it is an iPhone accessory. As for the iPad Pro and Vision Pro, it is more likely that those devices will be updated in October.

Alternatively, any of the devices could be announced in a press release on the Apple Newsroom website only, especially if updates are only minor.

The following new features and changes are expected for each device, according to a combination of Gurman's report today and previous rumors:

Stay tuned for coverage of Apple's announcements next week.

It’s time for these two products to combone into one device. And it should connect to the TV wirelessly.

hi - what exactly does coming soon mean? Does this mean we expect them to announce on sept 9 -- or later in an october event? which of the 5 do we expect to be in this month?
Coming soon has come to mean Apple makes an announcement about some great new features that are slated to arrive later in the year, which usually means some undefined time in the future.

Sure, but Apple does sell content that uses Dolby Atmos, for which you should be using eARC for.

My point is optical shouldn't be used for modern formats.

I dont know about 'shouldnt' but i do agree if you have the capabilities you should use the best option you have.

I mean consider some people are still using their $200 TVs speakers. Wether they use optical / HDMI or RCAs to watch youtube videos really doesnt matter.

A built in camera would be of limited use for so many people who don’t have their AppleTV sitting in the center above or below their TV. (Mine is completely hidden out of sight).

How about just making Apple TV and HomePod work as a home theatre instead?
(Like Sony’s A9 or Theatre Quad).

My 4k Apple TV is one of the few apple devices that is dying, I cannot figure out if it's the remote that's dead, the tv or maybe both as it keeps glitching and won't turn on/off and stop responding every now and then.

Weirdly, the Touch Remote gen of Apple TV which is even older is still rock solid! I'll probably have to get a new one, instead of spending like half only on a new remote and end us with a bricked TV anyway.

If Apple TV 4k gen4 has no Dolby Vision 2 support and no real audio passthrough then the product seems pointless. At least one of these two features would be great if done properly.
I hope this gen is a bit more than optimizing SoC inventory for profit margins by selling binned chips.

I said it would be totally Apple to adopt DV2 (which no-one will have in the foreseeable) in this new ATV but completely sack off audio passthrough which has been asked for repeatedly. Lol

thanks - so we think they dont come up at all on tuesday? or they announce they will be coming up with something new on them in the short future?

I wanted to use apple for home automation. I really did. But the things thar support it are so limited. I was able to connect my thermostat but that was about it.

Apple needs to stop being late to every game. (Esp the camera on the iphone but thats another story).

No thank you, I will never ever buy any HomePods - or anything where Siri are forced upon me liked that again.
I just traded the one's I had in - 2 minis + 2 HomePods - for a shi-tty price, but I’ve never been so satisfied with the Homepods', as when I left them in the store.
Apple have and sell some good stuff, but those are not among anything that ever had value to me.
Someone commented that airplay is better than bluetooth. It might be in some cases, but there’s other speakers than Apple’s that have airplay.

I’m free from the HomePods 😍
And I love the sound of my Pioneer BT speakers.

That would be very useful, especially since Tahoe apparently is dropping support for TimeCapsules ( AFP is finally being depreciated )

An Apple TV and external drive is a more affordable option than a Mac Mini and external drive if you want a networked Time Machine solution and you don’t already have a NAS. Making the Apple TV not just a home hub but a mini server.

Throw in more audio out options as a bonus and this might push me over the line to buy an ATV, even though I don’t own a TV :)
Don’t own a TV? How do you watch “Wednesday”?

Hubitat, Homebridge or Home Assistant (starting with easiest to most complex) are all really great options for bringing devices into the Apple ecosystem that are not natively Homekit compatible.

All three solutions are very reliable, have healthy and supportive communities, dont have subscription fees, and support wired LAN connectivity and dont require 'the cloud'. Once added as a bridge, devices operate like native Homekit devices.

Would highly recommend recommend. The latter two are free and will run on nearly anything.

On Macs and iPads. If we want a movie night, we set up the projector, but it and the screen are not set up.

We used to travel a lot ( for life and work not just holidays ). No were more settled, but were still stuck in the habit of thinking about tech, especially work tech, being portable.

Getting a big TV always ends up being low down the list of stuff we need to get / upgrade / generally spend extra money on.

Yep. On any practical level they don't exist. And besides, viewing distances and human eyeballs being what they are, an 8K screen would provide little to no perceptible difference in most situations. And even if you did get your hands on an 8K TV, what content would you even be able to get in that resolution? Basically nothing.

But on the capture end of things, huge resolutions do give a ton of flexibility for cropping and image stabilization when editing down to 4K.

Yep. It makes sense to record and even edit in 8k, then scale down to 4K.

The only real use case for 8k on-screen for consumption is if you have a huge screen and relatively short viewing distance.

Disney / Star Wars use their “Volume/StageCraft” system instead of green-screens - I don’t know if they’re 8K screens, but they are huge and very high resolution. So that’s one of the few use cases where there’d be a need for 8k.
