H.265 likely a no-go.

But on the up-side, Apple's Compressor app did recently receive Dolby Digital Plus support! Will definitely be testing that out soon!! 😉

A port for an optional camera, which, when attached, would reveal an otherwise hidden FaceTime app.

I believe this would encourage many more consumers to use both Apple's video and voice services.

Hidden FaceTime app??? Source?

Yes, either way. I think it would be easier for Apple to normalize that USB port than to build in some kind of network storage option. But either (or ideally BOTH) way(s) would be welcomed. Those of us who had the first generation tend to miss the local storage.

Nobody needs local storage. The cloud is perfect as the solution. And the iTunes store has all the content you possibly ever want as a consumer.

Not a chance, not until Apple has iTunes Match working for DVD and Blu Ray rips.

Also, i take my AppleTV camping and require the local storage for lack of reliable and fast access to the internet.

An iTunes Match for video content has to be approved by the content owners. Apple has no control over that.

I'd like a mini keyboard on the back of the remote for title, actor , etc etc searches and text entry.

make it cheaper. Its 2x more expensive then the Amazon one or a Roku.

Maybe multiple versions of it. Keep the current one at 50 bucks and the new one at 80-100. Most smart tvs and gaming systems do what the apple tv does minus the iTunes.

The apple tv is useless w/o iTunes for the common person. Fine you guys want network storage because you have 1000 movies on your external HD but again what average person does that? You go into a store and can get a roku or chrome cast for 1/2 or 1/3 the price of a 2 year old apple tv and most people will go the cheaper route. Or better year a new Apple tv is the price of a used Xbox 360 or PS3.... that play videos games and do the same things.

One thing I would love for it to do is they merge the airport express with the apple tv. 😀

Unless Apple have an interim model that is all planned out and almost ready to roll I think the next step would be to look at implementing 4K. Not that it's a big deal to most people, but marketing-wise 4K will be something we'll be hearing of more and more often...

As for storage, wouldn't it make sense to add a few SD slots? The transfer rates should easily be good enough to play HD content from those, right?

Nobody needs anything from Apple. They make nothing that is essential. It's about wants. I would like local storage to come back again (it was available in the first generation and the jailbreak crowd made the USB port work with it so that one could attach upwards of 2TB if they wanted). Since I would like it, that cuts into that "Nobody". Apparently a few others have responded to your post too, so it seems like I am not alone in this want.

The cloud is just 1 solution. I don't think it's a perfect one. I actually think it's a relatively poor option relative to all available options. The concept of it is great but the application of it is messy. Glad it exists and glad people like you can find it perfect for your own wants or needs. Myself? I'd rather have local or (local) network storage, with cloud options as second or third backup.

Again, glad it's there to be "perfect" for you. Obviously though, you do not represent everyone.

I agree. Also, Comcast is cutting back on the amount of data we can use a month, so I would rather not use that data to watch movies I have sitting on a NAS.

My list of "wants" would include something similar to ATV Flash on the AppleTV 2 (jailbroken). It can see the hard drive sitting attached to an Airport Extreme and play movies off of it. I would love to see something similar from Apple that adds similar capability that supports more formats. The main downside to the AppleTV2 is that it is 720p and I want 1080p. Also, it needs more horsepower and I think that will definitely happen.

Also a better GUI for handling movies and music is a necessity. Having to scroll through a long list of titles is ridiculous.

Apple has not really shown a lot of concern over market share. They could sell the Apple TV cheaper and cut into their margins to compete with Chromecast, but I don't think they want to. If they wanted to sell more AppleTVs they would at least run a commercial or two and market it a little bit. The Airplay feature is amazing, but the average consumer doesn't even know it exists. But, yeah, I agree that they would sell more and I would be happy to buy a $35 AppleTV 4.

I would love to see better audio capabilities from the Apple TV (if this is what you mean by combining it with the Airport Express). Currently, everything is sent out using a 48khz signal. Having an option to automatically send out the exact signal it is receiving (especially 16/44.1) would expand the AppleTV into audio spectrums it currently doesn't serve. If they also offered higher resolutions (24/96, 24/192, etc..) that market would be even larger. With the rumors of 24bit iTunes files being available in the future, it would be great if they added more audio capabilities.

Along the same lines, they need to put Beats Music on the AppleTV. Personally, i would like to see them kill Beats Music and rename it with Apple branding, but either way it needs to be added. I use Spotify myself, but an Apple branded service with Siri and AppleTV implementation would be enough to get me to switch. I should mention that I currently use Airplay for audio, but having it built into the AppleTV would be a welcome option.

Personally, I don't care about them adding a remote. The little remote is great for trips and I can just use my iPhone/iPad when I want to type something in.

You can use a Bluetooth keyboard or an iOS device. I think that's about as close as you'll get.

Yes, I know. But its a pain to have to turn on and pair a separate device. . And if you don't have a an IOS device then you need to purchase a BT keyboard.

It should be on the back of the controller

You do realise the Bluray, DVD, UV, iTunes, Amazon Instant, Google Play, Sony Video, etc, and all the streaming services have DRM?!!

At least with BD and DVD I can easily remove the DRM during the ripping process prior to converting to m4v before adding to my iTunes library which I then stream to my AppleTV, which I'm certain many others in this forum do.

And even without ripping, you're not locked down to one manufacturer. And you're free to lend and sell whatever disc you own.

The cloud is not a universal solution. Many people still have limited data download ability, have to pay for downloads, or have bandwidth issues. Even though I have a quite fast ADSL2+ connection, I find I can't stream HD movies during most evenings because of upstream congestion. So I download movies during off peak times to itunes on my computer so I can view them later. Local storage or preferably NAS access would be beneficial so I wouldn't need my computer running at the same time.

I also have movies from sources other than iTunes, that would be good to be able to access directly from NAS rather than via computer.

I would still like to see some form of storage option added, like SD card slots. Would be great to use Apple TV as a portable device to take with you, and having some sort of storage option would allow you to download content before leaving and then not having to worry about connecting to the internet.

In my opinion a good voice recognition via the included remote (like on the Fire TV from Amazon, see here: http://www.theverge.com/2014/4/21/5...e-search-will-support-netflix-later-this-year ) or via iOS device would be preferred by 'normal' (not power) users, especially if it included third-party apps like Netflix.

"Siri, show me all films directed by ..."

More generally, there are so many rumors about new Apple product categories in H2 2014 that maybe the new Apple TV will slip into 2015?

The release line-up looks very stuffed and maybe the Apple TV wouldn't get any attention in late 2014.

I would love to see it updated to at least match the Fire TV (support for gaming controllers/app store, voice recognition, maybe even 4k support in the future).

I think voice recognition is a given, however, it would be an addition to the keyboard. Voice recognition is still not perfect . And any user who couldn't get the right words picked up by it will want to type them in via a mini keyboard (hopefully on the back of the remote). It would also aid the Voice rec in understanding you, as you have to type in the words it doesn't pick up properly and it thus learns. They go hand in hand IMO.

All I want is native Plex support with DTS passthrough (prefer DTS-HD but I'm ok with regular DTS). The lack of Plex/DTS support is the only reason I got a Roku 3 instead.

Storage to take content with you? That's what iPads, iPod touch, iPhones are for. Oh yeah laptops too. I know the Apple TV is small, but it wasn't meant as a portable device.

Well, it used to have its own storage. If I want to take something with me to watch some tv shows or movies then why should I have to lug anything else along apart from my Apple TV? Should I bring a laptop along even though everything could easily be stored on a SD card?
