New Apple TV model

I really don't understand it.

I thought their pivot to Services revenue as a growth area would lead to less expensive ATV boxes & dongles to get people "in". It seems like, instead, they cheaped out and just put the ATV App on all the junk TV operating systems/platforms.

It really is amazing how crummy the usage experience is on so many of the built-in TV platforms. Laggy, confusing, stuff moving around, ADs all over, god only knows how much tracking & data harvesting/selling -- just bleh 🤮

Reminds me of vision pro, apple needs to make profit off the hardware and software but now they just aren't going to get sales. Apple is drunk off the success of the iPhone.

Still no news about a refresh? I have the second Gen and I am waiting for a new one. I wouldn't mind the newer 4K cause it has HDR 10. Was hoping they would announce something by now.

it’s 99% September or October
& will only be available after iOS 27 is out.
The fact they have deliberately delayed release because of this probably means that it will have some proper screen time (finally) & hopefully the feature set will make it a compelling device.
It will die as a mainstream device because of it’s enormous, in comparison, price.

No HDMI Stick, No Pro version, just the exact same looking box, which is a massive mistake, with industry leading internals, which very few will actually care about.
With the price hikes and lack of innovation this is a perfect product that will be in less than 0.5% of homes, because Apple will be Apple about it.

I’m so so so hoping I have got that last bit wrong and an altered looking tv box with a sub £130 price point is coming but I’d put good money against them trying to actively get this into people’s homes on a big scale.
No Neo TV coming, only ultra WiFi and ultra+Ethernet at ultra premium prices 😞

Good Points! I am hoping they add more to it but I am being hopeful. I will be happy just to get HDR 10, I have my Apple TV hard wired in now so it better not only be a wireless version.

I agree with the small amount of people buying it especially with most modern TVs having their own OS and now can sometimes stream higher quality than Apple TV. Not even mentioning the cheaper fire stick etc.

Offloads apps from your TV allowing all of the processing power of the TV to be devoted to the picture, not running apps in the background.

- In my experience, the Roku's tend to get hung up when scrubbing or fast forwarding 4K video. Apple TV 4K is a breeze.

- Roku does not adhere to the HLS delivery spec so you will never get to stream alternate video tracks (mainly a sports thing for now).

- My Sony / Android TV can do a hard crash once in a while that is not only frustrating, but takes a long time to get back up. (Needless to say, I try and keep my Sony TV as "dumb" as possible.) Conversely, if you ever do have a problem with the Apple TV, reboot is simple and — thanks to its more powerful CPU — only takes seconds to boot back up.

- In review sites, the Apple TV typically takes the win for image quality due to the better CPU/GPU.

- And of course, Apple TV has rock-solid support for Dolby Atmos whereas TVs often fall down on delivering the proper metadata for the format (leads to lack of surround sound or incorrect speaker playback). Very important if you have a home theater set-up or enjoy surround sound audio.

- Oh yes, I almost forgot — AirPlay on TVs and Roku is absolutely horrible (there - I said it!). I don't know who's at fault here, but I suspect it probably comes down to weak hardware. If you own an iPhone and/or are in the Apple ecosystem the Apple TV will be a much more seamless and enjoyable experience for casting media to your TV.

As I've mentioned previously, if I didn't need local streaming of my self-ripped content, I wouldn't need an ATV. But I'm obviously in the minority

(And of course there are other solutions for this, but I like to keep my own content and ATV purchases together)

Just to add to the "Why appletv vs other thing" chat. The worst thing about smart tv and why i'd never recommend one to anyone: they stop supporting it. I have a samsung smarttv. I maybe had it a year before functions started ended. Then the apps stop getting updates.

I do not have this issue with a playstation or ze appletv. Ye fire sticks (although super slow and clunky imo) still get updates.
AppleTV is by far teh best for what it does. What it has inside is vast overkill. I'd get an old one for a good price over firesticks and all that stuff. It truly "just works."

Roku devices & Amazon Firesticks aren’t the most popular because they are the best they are just at the best price and if Apple doesn’t compete closer to their price point they will continue just to be an elitist product.

One thing I can say I never had a problem or failure with any ATV I have bought just upgraded when new models came out passed the older ones on to friends will do the same when the new one finally appears.

Me too but I am getting doubtful, there has been nothing out at all about it. It's been 4 years I just don't get it.

There were quite a few leaks earlier in the year. Everything I've read suggests it's been ready to go for nearly a year, it was just the delays to AI-enhanced Siri that prevented it being released. Leaks suggest it will look the same, but with at least an A17 Pro chip. Expect it'll have a few other little hardware updates - Wi-Fi 7, maybe a couple of USB-C ports etc.

I don't care really, as long as it's an upgrade in some way. Just don't want to buy now and then a month later the new one comes out for the same price.

It's been "just around the corner" for years now. My son gave up early this year and just bought the current model. Can't say I blame him.

I would love for the AppleTV to be able to highjack the interface of the Samsung TV so other members of my household only see the Apple interface and not the Samsung. My wife gets extremely confused when the TV turns on with the Samsung interface and she can't find the apps she wants, or worse she does but it isn't logged in to the streaming account.

Yeah def wait, I hardwire mine in with ethernet so the wifi doesn't really mean much to me. I just want the added audio and HD support. Hopefully they surprise us all next month.

So why not set the tv to default to the Apple TV input? I haven't seen my TV's interface in years. That has nothing to do with a new Apple TV.

Hoping the A17 Pro model does have a built in USB C one with 3.1 speeds. I mean the last one with built in USB C was the TV HD

A17 Pro support will futureproof it by many years especially since the TV HD Model got 10 years of OS Support I expect this to get more than it

Nah for the Apple TV alone 8GB is enough

Apple requires 8GB of RAM on iOS devices for Apple Intelligence. So it is assumed that it will need more RAM for the next gen and likely will be 8GB (unless tvOS requires slightly less than iOS).

You can buy used at atv4 first gen. I have have mine since 2015. It’s still super snappy and light years ahead of the dumb and sluggish ui of any tv that I have used.

In fact it’s still as snappy as using my the latest iPhone or iPad. Siri works the same.

yeah the TV HD Models are still great

Any new ATV needs more RAM, not less or even the same.

I do not like it when Apps get killed in the background and have to fully refresh.

Definitely for sure. But this one if it has 8GB is a lot more than from the tvHD to the current one

tbh, the worst part has nothing to do with ai, but that the current model is 4 years old and at same price or 70% higher than when it was released after the recent rampant price increases. In 2-3 years, you will have a 7y old machine. And soon you'll wonder if Apple will support it for its next tvOS. That is what sucks. If it was -40% of its initial price, then yeah it would be still worth it for me too. But now, nah. I prefer keep waiting.

yeah what you wrote is the worst thing about the current model Apple TV.

As for wondering about future tv OS Support it will get 10 years just like the TV HD which will hit 11 years in September
